When Hanna’s relationship breaks down, she finds herself back living with her dad, which wasn’t part of the plan. Especially as her dad is also looking to get back on the dating scene. Can she sort her life out before her dad does?

Square One is an entertaining enough read, if a little slow paced. There’s quite a few cliches dotted around the story, but it’s an enjoyable story.

Tired of coming second best to her boyfriends band Hanna breaks up with him, leaves the flat they share and moves back in with her father, which is far from ideal situation in your 30s. Especially since he has just downloaded tinder…

This book follows Hanna’s journey to get her life back on track and find herself again. It was an easy read which I flew through in 24 hours and a good one for contemporary fiction lovers. I’m looking forward to reading more from Nell!

32 year old Hanna Markham is newly single in a world in which all her friends are getting married and having babies.
Not only is Hanna single, she's also had to move back to her Dad's spare room, her life couldn't be anymore tragic.

Square One is story of early adulthood, navigating personal growth and family dynamics. Very funny and relatable story from the author.

This was fine. I don't know how else to explain it. Fine. Parts were important for me as a woman in my late twenties and other parts I had no connection to. It was fine.

I was interested in this story but I couldn’t be engaged with the plot. I also couldn’t connect to the main character. There were moments of humour.

Unfortunately I will be unable to give feedback on this book. I requested this book and had intentions of reading it. However my taste in books has changed and I do not feel that a review from me would do the book justice

Sadly, I found this book didn't really make much sense and jumped around quite a lot without actually seeming to tell a story.

All I can say about it is that Hannah is thirty years old and having just split from her boyfriend, Joe is on the point of moving back in with her father until she can find her own place.

She bumps into an old friend and starts a relationship but after a few months he makes it clear that he does not want to commit and just wants to have fun. The relationship ends and being single again, Hannah starts to rethink what she wants out of life.

Very disappointing

Did not finish. The pacing was a little off, and I found the characters quite unrelatable and the pace slow.

Also I’ll never get over her not recognising the dad she was living with at the time in the street and thinking he was dishy.

Not for me unfortunately - which is a shame as I liked Nell’s non fiction book and had been excited to read this.

Another ‘typical millenial’ tale- sadly not as well written as many out there. Really enjoy Frizzell as a journalist but unfortunately did not find her compelling as a fiction writer

I think this book has come at just the right time for the subgenre of Women working things out! I loved the characters and felt like they could really exist!

Not a rom-com but a heartfelt, relatable and funny read, with some romance.

After splitting up with the non-committal and emotionally distant boyfriend she has been living with, Hanna moves back to her hometown of Oxford to live with her dad while she finds somewhere else to live.

Already wondering if she has made the right decision, she finds this is easier said than done as everywhere is so expensive. And to make matters worse she is horrified to discover that her dad is on Tinder and bringing dates back to the flat, while her own dating prospects seem to be going nowhere.

Hanna navigates coming to terms with her new job, her dad's girlfriend, her friends' marriages and pregnancies, and manages to create a better relationship with her parents and a clearer sense of herself and what she wants.

This was a really good read, it was deeply moving at times and very relatable but also made me howl with laughter. Very well written.

A really relatable book that fictionalises what many millennials are living through in these times: moving back with a parent.
I loved this book, empathised with the main character and was completely enthralled in it.
I would definitely recommend it!

This is another book I've read recently that is just unfortunately too slow to keep me interested - maybe as this is a debut novel it will get better with time

Thank you to Netgalley for this book in exchange for a full and frank review.

I loved this book, and loved going through Hannah's thirties with her. A lot of Hannah's problems really resonated with me when I went through that part of my life. It is just such a happy book and filled me with joy. I am definitely going to read more by this author. An excellent book.

I loved this so much! And really reasoned with Hannah. Living with my parents in 30s is awful and I so felt for her.

She was relatable and so funny!
I loved her character.

It was such an easy book to read, where you just wanted the best for Hannah.

I love a starting over book and this was fab.

Square One feels like my kinda book, and I loved Frizzells way of capturing a real quarter life crisis and a woman lost in her own life. But there were moments of this story that left me feeling entirely uncomfortable within the first few pages and from then I kept pushing as I struggled to get into the story fully and found Hanna very distant as an MC.

A quick and easy read, I can see why this book would appeal to plenty of readers. I personally couldn’t invest fully or relate to the main character but can appreciate how for some readers Hanna would tick all of those boxes! Pleasantly surprised for Nell’s novel debut but this one just wasn’t 100% for me.

Square One by Nell Frizzell is a relatable novel about feeling like a failure at life when things don't follow the plan you had envisioned and working out what to do about it.
