This was a good psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns. The characters were interesting, the story itself was great and the style of writing was perfect. I have read many books by this author and I have loved every one of them.. so this one didn’t disappoint although this one was different to the others. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading this genre.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s a little different to Lucy’s previous works, but still has the same level of mystery. I enjoyed the multiple different pov chapters and spent the whole time guessing who the murderer was.

Having read and enjoyed Lucy Foley's previous books, 'The Hunting Party' and 'The Guest List', I was pleased to pick up 'The Paris Apartment' - another standalone mystery/thriller. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read the book in exchange for an honest review.

The story centres on Jess, a young woman visiting Paris to stay with her half brother, Ben (as well as running away from her life in England). He lives in a luxurious apartment block but - when she arrives - Ben is missing. The other residents of the block are not helpful - and some are downright hostile to Jess and about Ben. As Jess struggles to piece together the events surrounding Ben's disappearance, she also begins to uncover some shady secrets about the residents of 12 Rue des Amants...

I think this might be my favourite of all Foley's books. I started reading with no expectations about what would happen - and I kept reading with no clue what was coming next. There are just so many twists in this story that already starts with a mysterious disappearance.

The chapters are narrated by lots of the different characters, although the main narrator is Jess. I liked that the characters were all quite distinct, which made the book easy to read, even if they did occasionally fall into caricatures of French people, e..g. the chic older woman, the wild young woman, the gentleman wine connoisseur. Jess was easily the most relatable as she blundered her way through situations she didn't understand.

Foley plots the narrative well, with plenty of cliffhangers and revelations to keep any reader going. There were some slightly unbelievable elements, but I don't want to detail them here in case they are spoilers! Instead, I recommend you just go with it and enjoy the ride - it's a lively, fun and fairly light read.

I so enjoyed this slow burn! The Paris Apartment is a psychological thriller, and it kept me turning the pages, desperate to find out what had happened to Jess’ half brother, Ben.

Everything feels threatening: the apartment block, the other inhabitants and even Paris itself. There are riots taking place throughout the city, and Jess can’t seem to find anywhere that feels safe. Hey, even I didn’t feel safe reading it!

But could I put it down? Absolutely not!

Jess arrives in Paris to visit her brother Ben. However upon arrival he’s nowhere to be seen. As she does some probing in the apartment block no one wants to talk to her about Ben. Some twists and turns throughout the book.
Nice short chapters told from different characters points of view.

This was such a fascinating read. The twists and turns kept me guessing throughout. Right up to the end of the book there were so many possibilities for the denouement. Brilliantly clever.

I received an ARC of this book thanks to NetGalley and publisher HarperCollins UK in exchange for an honest review.

I wish I liked this book more.

The Paris Apartment is the story of a woman who shows up to stay with her brother in Paris, only to find he is missing. Having nowhere else to go, she decides to stay in his apartment in the hopes he'll show up. The longer she stays though, the more ominous the situation seems. The other residents of the apartment building all seem to be hiding something, but is it related to her brother?

This book has a reasonable set up and plot but it suffers almost immediately from too many POV characters. I found it difficult to keep track of who was who, and in particular it was hard to remember how different characters were related. This kind of book relies heavily on being able to remember characters (it features a lot of people discussing other people, which doesn't work so well if you don't remember the names) but I found the characters either weren't established strongly or their initial relations to each other weren't emphasised enough for me to be able to fully appreciate the story.

That aside, this is quite a mediocre mystery. It never felt like the stakes were particularly high or meaningful. I wasn't really surprised by anything that happened, nor did I care strongly about any of the other characters. I think the other books by this author are much better

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

An enjoyable and captivating read, that will keep you guessing till the end. Jess arrives to her half-brother's flat in Paris, only for him to have mysteriously vanished. So begins Jess's quest to find Ben and in doing so, she becomes entangled in dangerous secrets. At times, the melodramatic and suspenseful writing seemed forced and didn't flow naturally - hence my 3 stars. Nonetheless, it was a thrilling, easy-to-read book.

This was such a twisty, fast-paced read - I loved it! It’s one of those that has you turning the pages so quickly to find out what happens next that before you know it, you’ve finished!

I loved it because:

🥐 it has short chapters so it’s easy to read on and on and not even realise!
🥐 the tension was palpable and the suspense building was brilliant
🥐 the twists and turns were genuinely so unexpected
🥐 it was easy to read, nothing too convoluted which can sometimes happen with books containing lots of characters, backstories and lots of twists.
🥐 the chapters are narrated individually by the characters so you hear all of their voices/backstories and points of view
🥐 it wasn’t guess-able! Not for me anyway! Not until the very end when the author cleverly allows things to be pieced together do you realise how it all fits!
🥐 the ending was great, unexpected and succinct - we always love a good ending to a good story!

This was not an enjoyable read. There's nothing I can put my finger on specifically but if I was forced to try, I think it's that all the characters are unlikeable and half formed. They're all also controlled by a man who hardly appears in the story. The writing was good even if the story is full of problems and deeply unpleasant.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the way the story built up across different characters, you got small pieces of the jigsaw and it came together near the end.

What another great book from Lucy Foley! I’ve read previous books from this author and really enjoyed them. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this was just as good as those. I enjoyed the story and the characters were very well written.

Another great story from Lucy Foley, although I didn’t love this as much as her previous two. Not sure if it was the narrator or the characters, or just that The Guest List was one of my absolute favourite reads, but this story wasn’t as good for me. That said I did still enjoy it and it’s still well worth a read for anyone who likes a good mystery!

I have only read The Guest List by Lucy Foley and it turned out to be a disappointment for me. That didn't stop me from making The Paris Apartment one of the highly anticipated books for 2022. It's an atmospheric thriller with a gripping plot. Set in Paris, the book starts with Jess arriving at Paris to meet her estranged brother and start over. But what meets her is an empty apartment and hostile residents of the apartment. Ben is missing and all her neigbours turn out to be suspects. Jess has to find what happened to her brother before her neighbours evict her.

This was a gripping and unputdownable thriller with an array of intriguing characters and compelling plot. Nothing about this book was predictable for me. I liked how the author kept building the tension without giving much away. I liked Jess. She is a survivor and strong. The residents of the apartment are eccentric and they had a weird connection with each other which only added to the suspense. I liked the final twist.

Overall, The Paris Apartment was a riveting and unputdownable mystery with a lot of twists. I highly recommend this book for fans of mysteries like whodunnits with a complex array of characters and an almost creepy setting.
