Murder most foul ★★★☆☆

When wayward Jess arrives at her brother’s swanky Paris apartment, she is looking to regroup and rest. However, Ben is nowhere to be seen and none of the neighbours will tell her anything. There is a large bleach stain on the floor, blood on the cat, and Ben’s keys and wallet are still on the table. Something very wrong is going on at Rue des Amants…

Surrounded by the mysterious inhabitants of the other apartments – violent Antoine, charming Nick, teenage Mimi, glacial Sophie, and the creepy concierge – Jess has stumbled into a web of secrets and lies. Secrets that somebody will kill for. Will Jess discover what happened to Ben and get out alive?

Gradually we learn more about the tenants of the apartment block and the connections between them. What begins as an average crime thriller peaks with two big twists which expose the murky underside of the Paris apartments.

For fans of Foley’s previous novels The Hunting Party and The Guest List.

The Paris Apartment - Lucy Foley

Very cleverly written with continuous, mostly short ‘chapters’ by each of the main cast, as the story slowly develops.

Shrouded in mystery and intrigue, this slow burner is a definite page turner that will definitely keep you looking for the truth until the very end.

My only criticism of this most atmospheric of reads, is that the longer it went on, the easier it was to pick (small) holes in the likeliness of certain events ever happening/ being plausible. That being said, this is definitely worth a read!

I loved every single thing about this! It’s the first Lucy Foley book I’ve read but I’m already checking out her previous ones. The Paris Apartment was a joy - really well written, clever, different and totally gripping. I enjoyed the short chapters and the way they flipped from one character to another, adding more mystery and intrigue. I didn’t want to reach the end - it was a gripping, creepy, whodunnit and is one of the best books I’ve read this year. Absolutely brilliant ending, and I’ll be reading it again very soon. Just fab!!!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the chance to read this superb book.

Jess is a troubled young woman. She has not had the easiest life, unlike her half brother Ben, who seems to have fared so much better.

After yet another disastrous incident with a boss she hated, Jess thinks it’s time to jump ship before the police pay a visit. Ben is living in Paris, so she invites herself to stay with him at short notice. Ben isn’t best pleased, but agrees to her visit, telling her to come to his apartment. Due to her train running late, Jess arrives much later than expected, in the middle of the night, and is unable to gain entry, despite making as much noise as possible. The apartment is in a very desirable location and, from the outside, looks super expensive, making Jess wonder how Ben can afford to live there on the salary of a journo writing restaurant reviews.

Eventually Jess gains access, no spoilers here, and that is when she starts to realise something is wrong. Where is Ben? Who are these weird residents? What is going on?

Foley is certainly living up to her reputation with this new book. What I especially like is that the reader is not kept in the dark to the very end, no great denouement, just lots of reveals, with an unexpected ending! The revelations keep coming throughout the book, making it a real page turner. I reached 80% of the book in no time, then made myself slow down as I really didn’t want the story to end.

Well done on another cracker of a story.

Thank you NetGalley.

Lucy Foley's thrillers are becoming a sub-genre all of their own: a group of nasty characters thrown together in a cut-off location where one of them will meet a sticky end but the reader doesn't know who or why..
This third outing provides sufficient variation to keep the interest of readers of the previous two. This time we know which character has disappeared, and the setting - a vividly described Paris apartment block - is less closed than the previous settings of a snowed-in Highland lodge and a remote island resort.. This time we also have one likeable character and sleuth. She is the sister of the missing man who only came to Paris to get away from a hairy situation at home, a decision she very soon regrets. Within 24 hours of her arrival she senses every occupant of the building her brother lives in is hiding something.
Ideal for fans of the very slow build-up (and for those seeking a comprehensive crash course in French swear words....)
With thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an early copy in exchange for an independent review.

Lucy Foley does it again!!

I loved Foley's previous books, their twists and turns and guessing games, so The Paris Apartment jumped straight to the top of my list when I was granted it to read. And I loved it!!

Characters who came to life in a city described so well I thought I was there. And the apartment block itself was like another living breathing character.

Brilliantly plotted and written. I whizzed through it.

Thanks to Lucy Foley, HarperCollins, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review.

Very different to Lucy Foley's previous books in narrative style and structure but that's not a bad thing. I can see why it has so many positive reviews so far but unfortunately I was looking for more of the vibe of the first two novels. Sometimes The Paris Apartment felt a little slow in pace in comparison.
Well written though and I can tell it will do well.

BEWARE! Do not start reading this book at bedtime as you won’t get any sleep, It’s a page turner for sure. Who did it? You will read in a frenzy trying to work it out and put all the pieces together.
Thank you Lucy & Net Galley for letting me read this. I definitely don’t give good reviews unless it’s deserved & this is. 4.5 stars.

I’ve read both Lucy Foley’s previous books and loved them both. This new release -The Paris Apartment - I found slightly more challenging to get into. The mystery as it opens clearly has many layers and we are presented with a multiplicity of points of views with a variety of unreliable perspectives from the main characters. Everyone has something mysterious they’re seeking to hide. All in all this was something of Goley’s signature and if you’ve enjoyed her previous books you’ll like this one too. It’s very much a character driven mystery and place that is the apartment is very well described.
A good read for lovers of characterful mysteries.

Thank you to the publishers and Net Galley for my free e-copy.

I have read a couple of Lucy Foley books before 'The Hunting Party' and 'The Dinner Guest' and enjoyed these so was looking forward to this book.

The book is set in Paris, France and I really liked this is a backdrop and location - I also loved all the French references and words (definitely learnt some new swear ones lol)

The story begins with Jess arriving in Paris to stay with her estranged half brother so straight away we know there is some background to this which kept me wanting to read on from the start. But when she arrives at the mansion apartments he has been living at and where they had agreed shortly before to meet he is not there and a recent voice note he sent may uncover something more sinister.

She gradually meets the rest of the residents as she sets out to find him and what has happened. We soon realise all is not as it seems.

This is a brilliant , tense thriller with of course great twists that genuinely did have me guessing until the end.

Another excellent book from Lucy Foley. Jess goes to stay with her brother Ben in his flat in Paris. But he seems to be missing. The story unfolds from the viewpoint of Jess and the other inhabitants of the flats.

Lucy Foley is great at delivering atmosphere and suspense. I’ve loved her other books and this one is just as good, full of tension, drama and fleshed out characters. The building in which ‘the Paris Apartment’ resides feels sinister from the outset. The building itself is almost a character in the plot: dark, mysterious, unknowable.

A cross between Hitchcockian horror, Roald Dhals ’Tales of the Unexpected’ and an Agatha Christie Murder mystery, Lucy Foley’s ‘The Paris Apartment’ firmly positions itself as a classic in the murder, mystery, thriller genre.

Everyone has a motive to want Ben to disappear, from the haughty Sophie to the disheveled Antoine. The Concierge is perhaps the only person in the house motivated by other concerns, but the family have power and influence over everyone in their sphere……or maybe not quite everyone.

A fast-paced thriller of a book which delves into the seedier parts of Parisienne life and the truth that lies behind the facade of wealth and respectability.

I wouldn’t want to give too much away other than to urge you to read it for yourself. As sparking as Paris at night and as dark Les Catacombes, which lie beneath its feet.

Thank you to Harper Collins, Netgalley and Lucy Foley for this ARC in return for my honest review. I read this book over a couple of days. Hugely enjoyable and engrossing. I love that the story was told from multiple perspectives. The cast of characters were mostly despicable but engaging none the less. Bound to be another huge hit.

Jess arrives in Paris as an unwanted guest to stay with her brother, Ben. She arrives at the mysterious but grand apartment block to find no trace of him. The residents are all behaving oddly and she’s sure there are secrets to unveil as she desperately try’s to find Ben.

Lucy Foley is the queen of atmospheric thrillers and this murder mystery doesn’t disappoint. As ever, her twists and turns keep you guessing. Can anyone be trusted? Personally, the setting doesn’t have quite the same pull as the highlands (The Hunting Party) or a remote island (The Guest List). However, the depth of the characters and plot more than makes up for it. Definitely one to read! With thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

A locked room murder mystery set in Paris, told from several points of view.

While civil unrest leads to riots in the streets of Paris, the inhabitants of a dated building have so much more to worry about. With a cast full of varied and interesting characters, this is a gripping whodunnit full of unexpected twists and turns. I loved it and highly recommend it.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my advance review copy of this novel.

What a great read. Lucy Foley weaves a compelling story, cleverly characterizes her intriguing protagonists and melds it all into a descriptive, evocative journey through haute and bas Paris, complete with 'argot', current issues, drama and intrigue which drives the reader determinedly to the ending. I couldn't put it down and was almost sorry to reach the final pages.
Highly recommended.

Jess has left Brighton, after a run in with her boss, to join her half brother in Paris. Arriving late she buzzes the bell for her brother's apartment as he has instructed but there is no response. She can't climb into the courtyard as it has a metal gate and walls either side with glass imbedded in the top. Being pretty street wise she waits until a resident comes along and then sees the code he punches in to enter. Once in, she goes to the third floor flat of her brother, but still no reply. She then picks the lock to find that her brother has left his wallet, keys and clothes as if he should still be there.
The story is then picked up by each of the residents in the building, who tell their own story, bit by bit.
The story becomes more intriguing by the page. Drama and mystery is the theme. An unusual and well written book.
