This is the first book in new series and certainly sets the tone for some thrilling, gripping and entertaining reads to come! The main character, Lucy has to deal with being a police officer, investigating murders and raising her son alone. This makes her feel a little more human even though she certainly has to act tougher than she might be. Recommended for anyone who loves a good crime thriller full of frills and chills.

Set in a small Irish community, a murder shocks the village, when popular school teacher, Lisa Moran disappears and her body is found.
Loved the characters in this book and their lives intertwined with the story, with their own issues and stories unravelling.
New author to watch - hope this is a new series.

I cannot believe this is Martian’s debut novel, I sincerely hope there is more to come! Especially if they contain the same main characters. An excellent crime novel with clearly a lot of research gone into it! Would definitely recommend!

A tense, fast-paced, and deftly plotted thriller, which kept me guessing right to the end. I'm already looking forward to the next outing for Detective Sergeant Lucy Golden and her crew Truly could not put this down. Such a brilliant opening chapter and then so many twists and turns.

I love books that are set in Ireland or Scotland. I find them always very atmospheric and this one did not disappoint at all! It is a twisted story that keeps you on the edge of your seat and leaves you with your mouth hanging open when the penny drops.
A body of a woman is found on the beach and it is soon established that it is the body of a missing school teacher. Detective Sergeant Lucy Golden is tasked with finding the murderer and figuring out why Lisa Moran was killed. Will there be more murders and what or who is lurking in the dark? If this is not enough she is also having problems with her son. She knows something is going on but he refuses to talk to her.
This will make such a wonderful movie I'm already working on a cast in my head!

Thank you to NetGalley and Little, Brown Book Group for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion

I like crime thrillers set in small towns and communities, that sense of everyone knowing everyone else's business and having long held grudges can be really powerful. 'The Night Caller' made the most of that, with Lucy Golden, a local police officer investigating the murder of the town's school teacher Lisa Moran, Lucy has her own bridges to build with her old friends and neighbours, following her husband's arrest for fraud
Well plotted and with enough twists and revelations to leave me wanting more throughout
I'll definitely read more from the same series

The night caller by Martina Murphy.
On Doogort East Bog, Achill Island, a body is found. The close community is stunned to learn that it's Lisa Moran, a popular teacher who disappeared two days earlier.
DS Lucy Golden is assigned to the case. For her, it's personal. As an Achill native, she knows that sometimes great evil can lurk in plain sight. Having moved back from Dublin, she has spent the last ten years trying to prove herself to her colleagues after her husband was jailed for fraud. This is her chance to put the past behind her. Her teenage son Luc's behaviour, however, is increasingly troubling and Lucy doesn't have time for distractions.
I really really enjoyed this book. Great story and plot. I hope there is more to come. 4*.

This was a really gripping slow-burn thriller novel. I loved the atmospheric setting of a small Irish town, and I also enjoyed getting to uncover Lucy's backstory, and her and Dan made a very likeable team. If you're looking for an intense slow-burn mystery from a new author, I definitely recommend 'The Night Caller'!

I really enjoyed this cleverly plotted mystery. The characters are endearing and the setting is perfectly described. The back story of the two main characters are very believable, so they really gel as characters. I will be looking out for more from this author.

The Night Caller is a slow-burn thriller, interweaving a standard police procedural with an intriguing character study.
Set in Ireland, we follow our two main characters as they are investigating a murder. A young woman was found, beaten, and the investigation into her death throws up some rather odd facts. Though we don’t learn how until much later, it’s tied to a killing that took place years earlier and some more recent crimes.
I enjoyed learning about Dan and Lucy as we watch them carry out their investigation. They each have their issues, and I can certainly see these being explored further if this is part of a series. While this was interesting, it never became a distraction from the gritty focus of our main story.
As things progressed, I found myself slack-jawed at what was unravelling. The crime and our knowledge of the one responsible was quite unexpected, though the clues are there if you remain alert.
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read this before publication in exchange for my review.

So very intense and gripping. Every time I picked up the book I didn't want to put it down again. A great storyline, brilliant storytelling and great characters. I absolutely loved the Irishness of it all, the description of Achill Island, the people, the banter,... all of it

A new series and a new author. A slow burner which never got going until the final chapters. I would have liked to know more about the Captain. This book could have been so much more, unfortunately for me it did not deliver. Saying that I am sure other readers will enjoy it more just not for me.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.

With great descriptions of the remote bog land surrounding Achill Island the author really sets the scene for this detective novel. Lucy and Dan are tasked with finding the murderer of a popular teacher Lisa Moran. But as they investigate the case it appears that Lisa wasn't as clean cut as many people are saying.
A really good read, great police work with a likeable team. Would love to see this as a series of books.
Many thanks to Netgalley and publishers for the opportunity to read this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review

4+

From the cracking start when ‘The Captain’ begins the story to the good ending, this is an absorbing read and I feel as if I’m there on Achill Island, Co Mayo. When 25 year old primary school teacher Lisa Moran is reported missing, DS Lucy Golden and DG Dan Brown (‘Golden Brown’, yes, you have to be a certain age for this one!) are sent to Achill Island to investigate with DI William Williams (‘Cig’ - Irish for Inspector) in charge. Lucy narrates and it’s interspersed with The Captain which works chillingly well.

First of all, although there are several ‘stars of the show’, the standout has to be Achill Island and I’m kicking myself for not visiting as in my last visit as I was close! It provides a unique atmosphere with the Doogort Bog, which is central to the action, being used very effectively. It’s a bit remote, the community is tight knit and it’s traditionally Irish. I love it and especially the dialogue which takes me right back to this wonderful country. Secondly, the partnership of Golden Brown is excellent. I really like Lucy, she feels authentic, she’s got a past and is trying to balance being a mother to 18 year old Luc with the demands of her job. Dan is equally likeable and his evolving storyline is an interesting one too. The Cig is a fascinating character, he’s tough but fair and a thorough leader. It’s a good team and the police procedure seems well done too. The plot which starts with Lisa and links to past events on Achill Island and is a very engaging read which keeps you guessing and it’s interesting seeing how views on Lisa start in one place and finish in another. The pace is fast, it’s thrilling and exciting, there’s tension and some spine tingling creepiness, it has twists and turns aplenty as well as tragedy and sadness which all builds to a good ending.

Overall, I believe this is a debut and if so, it’s a very accomplished one. Write more please Martina Murphy especially about Lucy and Dan! Thank you!

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Little Brown Book Group, Constable for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

A Community Stunned…
Achill Island, a beautiful place, a close knit community. When a body is discovered on Doogarth East Bog the community is stunned and then shattered to find that it’s Lisa Moran, a well liked teacher on the island who had disappeared two days prior. Another body is soon found on the bog throwing the commiunity into panic. Achill native DS Lucy Golden is assigned the case. Can Lucy juggle her own considerable demons together with the murder enquiry to try to catch a killer? Tense, well written suspense with a good sense of place, a pacy plot and credible characters
