This is a beautiful moving story. The authors writing is so good. The characters are well developed. A wonderful atmospheric novel.

I can’t think what it is about this book but there was just something missing. I loved the characters. The mother/daughter, father/son relationships. I felt slightly emotional reading it but something was missing. 🤔 I feel like I knew the emotional trying to be reached but it didn’t quite get there & fell a little flat. Somehow despite that, I feel like the characters will stay with me a while.

I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide me review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.

Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.

However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x

This is a great general fiction book, which has beautiful descriptive writing, a heartwarming and emotional story, gorgeous settings, and lovely characters. I really enjoyed it.

The story is about Florence, Dougie and Nell, and each of their individual stories. Their stories are from different timelines, but they combine together to build a beautiful book, which captivates and delights. Highly recommended!

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book.

A really wonderful read.. I enjoyed this dual timeline story, 1969 and 2005. We meet Florence, Nell and Dougie. A slow burner with well-written characters.

#LittleWing will take you on an emotional journey,: when Nell finds out that her mother is actually her aunt, she knows she needs to see the place where she was born. It is a self discovery journey that takes her to a remote island in Scotland.

A lovely , sometimes heartbreaking story about the time in the 60s when young single girls were sent away, out of sight to have their babies. The book is told across two timelines we meet young Flora who finds herself at 17 alone, frightened and pregnant so her family banishes her off to a Scottish island. Back in the present day Nell, a young woman who works in a cafe and cares for an elderly man Frank while trying to find the time to visit her mother who has mental health issues is heart broken when her mother Wendy doesn't recognise her and calls her Florence. We soon discover the connection and the book hooks you in. We also meet a young man called Dougie, Neil is about to find out where she comes from and the reader has the privilege of being there beside her. A brilliant read

Little Wing is the beautifully told story of three family timelines crossing and interacting with one another. Nell Flora and Dougie impact on one another's lives in various ways, some more significant than others. The beauty of the story lies in how their decisions affect other lives further in time. I hadnt read Freya North before but would definitely read more by her

I have been reading Freya North's books since she first starting writing back in the late 90's. They were good reads back then and whilst I have not read anything of her for a while now picking up this most recent one has made me realise that I should go back and pick up the ones I have missed because she is a really good author who knows how to tell a really good story.

Little Wing is set between London, Colchester but mostly Harris in the Outer Hebrides and follows the story of Nell who has recently discovered that maybe he family tree is not exactly what she thinks it is. This book is full of wonderful characters, people who help and care for Nell as she tries to find out the truth and of course Douglas.... but you will have to read it to find out.

My only tiny criticism of this book is the ending felt a bit like it just drifted to a close but it is only a minor issue and overall I really enjoyed this story and now I really really want to go to Harris

I become engrossed in this novel. Nell is in her 30s, looks after elderly Frank and the staff at the Cafe she manages and regularly visits her mum who suffers from mental illness. When she finds out her mum is not her biological mum, she goes to Scotland to discover who she is. Meanwhile, Dougie has left Scotland and his Dad behind and is working as a photographer in London but feels like he is existing and not really living. On a trip back to Scotland, he and Nell cross paths and are surprised to learn they have a lot in common. Interwoven with the tale of Nell and Dougie is the story of Flora which is both beautiful and sad.
Very enjoyable read.

This book was a bit out of my comfort zone, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it! Centred around Nell, we see her find out that her life isn’t what she thought it was and her going on to discover exactly who she really is.

I loved that the book was split across different timelines and characters and it made for very quick reading. The sections set in Harris were my favourite (perhaps because I’m Scottish?!) and I thought Freya North described the setting beautifully. You could really imagine yourself there and seeing the island through Nell’s eyes. The inclusion of Douglas’ story worked well, although I was a little disappointed that they didn’t meet until about two thirds of the way through the book. I would have loved to have had more of them together!

Nell’s character is manager of a cafe and really liked that the author included lots of diversity through the characters that Nell works with. The cafe sounds so full of spark and character that I would love to visit it in real life! Freya North also deals with mental health issues well in this book, showing just how hard they can be but with a tenderness too.

Overall a lovely surprise of a book!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a free ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily.
I read 'Cat', an earlier novel written by this author many years ago and was pleased to see I'd been offered a copy of this book. However, nothing could have prepared me for what a wonderful treat lay in store.
It delivers 3 stories linked through family history with powerful characterisation; the reader understands the life Nell has led with Wendy's mental health issues affecting daily life, the distant Aunt Marjorie providing little support or comfort, Dougie's stilted relationship with his father and in the background there are the passages describing Flora's life, thoughts and feelings as she becomes pregnant and suffers banishment. There are wonderful descriptions of the island of Harris and the kindness and community spirit of the islanders that enable the reader to see it clearly. The narrative style is wonderful, I felt as though I was there living through the experiences, and there are so many emotional moments in this truly beautiful book. I fully recommend it as a totally absorbing brilliant book.

I have loved Freya's writing for years and was so excited to hear that she had a new book coming out.
Little Wing was certainly worth wait. Freya's writing is so detailed that I feel you can feel and touch the landscape that she is writing about.

This story is captivating with absolutely beautiful characters each learning about themselves along the way.

I loved how Freya explored Nell's live both in the present and in the past, allowing us to meet her family back in 1969 and return back to the modern day.
Heartbreakingly beautiful that at times made me catch my breath. The characters draw you in emotionally and take you on their journey and let you share their pain and their happiness.

Clear themes of love, loss, lies, sadness, mental health and self discovery.

First book of 2022 finished. I hadn't read a Freya North book for years - but then again I don't think she has written anything new for quite some time. This was a beautiful, emotional slow burn of a story. Partly set on the Isle of Harris. The story slowly drew me in and I became invested in the characters - the ending was particularly moving.

I used to read and enjoy Freya North's books, but she hasn't written one for quite a few years. I was thrilled to see that she had a new book and even more happy to receive an early preview copy to review.
This is different in style to her earlier books, more gentle, slower paced and serious. It is beautifully written and I really enjoyed reading it. I loved the characters and the locations.
I really hope that there are more books by Freya North soon. Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC.

Little Wing by Freya North.
1969. Florence Lawson, a 16-year-old schoolgirl who dreams of being an artist, finds herself pregnant and banished to one of the most remote parts of the UK.
1986. Dougie Munro, searching for adventure, leaves the Isle of Harris – the island of his birth – for art college and a career in London as a photographer.
2005. Nell Hartley, content with her life managing a care-in-the-community cafe in Colchester, discovers a shocking truth about her family.
Between the sprawl of London, suburban Essex, and the wild, unpredictable Outer Hebrides, three lives collide and interweave as questions are asked and secrets surface. What happened to Florence? Why is Dougie now so reluctant to return home? How can Nell make peace with the lies she's been told?
A good read with good characters. Likeable story. 3*.
