This is a thoroughly engaging and enjoyable mystery that I can see being a big hit with upper Key Stage 2 readers. Sophie Cleverly has a real talent for creating strong, curious young characters that children can relate to and admire.
The story is well paced with just the right amount of intrigue and suspense to keep readers turning the pages. The historical setting is atmospheric without being too complex, and it offers a great opportunity to spark discussions around Victorian life and the roles of women and girls at the time.
The main character is brave, determined and clever, making her an excellent role model for young readers. There is a lovely balance between lighthearted moments and more serious themes, all handled in an age-appropriate way.
I would happily recommend this to children in Years 5 and 6 who enjoy mysteries, adventures or historical fiction. It would also work well as a class read or group text. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read a copy.

Unfortunately I was unable to read and review this book due to a fault I had on my phone but I would like to thank the publishers for accepting my request x

This was a great mystery featuring the headstrong Violet Veil, a girl born in a graveyard, who struggles against society expectations of her role as a girl, when all she wants is to be taken seriously and help her father in his mortuary.
I loved the Victorian setting, the creepy graveyard, and the thoroughly unlikeable villains.
The mystery that Violet unravels with the help of Oliver and her dog Bones, was intriguing, and
Perfect for fans of the 'Agatha Oddly' series or the 'Murder Most Unladylike' series, I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for Violet's next case!

The first in the Violet Veil series this book is a gripping adventure - full of mystery, danger and determination.
Violet is a character that I am sure many readers will look up to. Determined not to be put in a box and limited - somewhat stubborn and rather rebellious. Violet is not going to let anyone stop her finding the truth.
A perfect read for those who enjoy the Murder Most Unladylike books or the Girl Called Justice books.
I am very much looking forward to the next instalment which is due to be published early next year.
