This was a brilliant mystery novel with a complex and intriguing main character who I can't wait to see more from. 100% recommend!!!

A very good and fast paced yarn. The one point I was not really on board with was the coincidence that drew our characters together.
Despite this, I really enjoyed the character of DI Elise King involved in her first case, post cancer treatment and being a resident of the small seaside resort to boot.
Plenty of twists and turns towards the end and that’s always satisfying. I did guess the who, but definitely not the why.
I did originally request this through Netgalley and my account shows it was downloaded, but I had to read it in print as the digital version disappeared. I wanted to add this for transparency.

An enjoyable crime mystery set in a small coastal town. Interesting characters and story and the narrative held my attention to the end.

Another winning read from Fiona, whose previous books I've enjoyed immensely. Great if you like fiction with a bite and a thriller that creeps up on you. Thanks to Netgalley for the review copy.

The first half of this book fits into the 'cosy's category, and it worked as a storyline in my opinion. The second half, where Elise goes back to work, is more police procedure based and u didn't enjoy this part as much.
There was a lot if characters in the book which sometimes made it hard to follow.
On the whole I enjoyed this book.
Thanks to netgalley and the publishers for this read.

I absolutely loved Fiona Barton’s previous books, so I was delighted to receive this ARC in exchange for an honest review. And while I enjoyed aspects of this one, unfortunately, I was nowhere near as enthralled as I have been reading her other books. Elise is a great character and I enjoyed her and her neighbour’s sleuthing, but the small seaside town setting and the rest of the characters were a little dull in comparison.
I will still look forward to reading Barton’s future books.

If you love a good mystery thriller then look no further !!

Elise is a successful detective on extended leave after having treatment for breast cancer. But when a local man goes missing her and her neighbour, Ronnie, decide to do a little of their own detective work.

Dee is a local woman, struggling to make ends meat, as a cleaner for a lot of the locals. She is hardworking, and remains invisible to most that she works for, and therefore knows more than most about the lives and secrets of her employees.

The village and its residents seems to have a lot of secrets but in order to find the missing man will the secrets need to be revealed ? Can Elise find the truth ?

This is a great mystery thriller with some great characters, especially Ronnie, the neighbour come part time detective !! Lots of secrets and twists but sometimes a little to much interweaving of characters but a great read !!

Thank you to Random House UK and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book.

Ebbing is a small town by the seaside where weekenders come for a getaway and the locals all know each other. But one of the locals, Charlie, has gone missing and everyone is talking about what might have happened. But a lot of them have secrets and it’s time for the truth to come out.

I want to start by saying that I’ve read and enjoyed a few of Barton’s past books. This one left me a little disappointed but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Barton has a way with story building that makes me immediately hooked. I loved her vastness of characters and the build-up of stories throughout. I loved Dee and Elise as characters and felt they were very well developed as main characters. I also enjoyed the side characters and what they bring to the story.

However, it got a little messy for me. There were so many characters and different stories going on that I didn’t know what was relevant information. I kind of got the feeling that there was too much going on until around halfway through when the main focus was starting to become clearer.

I still think Fiona Barton is a great author and this story gripped me and messed with my head. I was second-guessing who was involved and towards the end, I really couldn’t put this book down. Definitely for fans of detective crime novels.

This was a brilliant book, so well written and full of suspense and mystery. It kept you very intrigued right to end while the story unfolded throughout the book. I loved all the characters of the book and you felt you were in their lives with them . I love a psychological thriller book that has a great ending and the story has a great ending. I have read other of this authors books and they all have been fantastic so far.

A great whodunnit involving local copper Elise, who is on phased return to the force following cancer treatment and her fantastic nosy 60+ neighbour, who becomes a great friend and a superb helpmat solving the local mystery. They are on the trail of local man Charlie, who has gone missing after a music festival. Charlie was a cheery and well liked man, but he had lots of skeletons and soon links are found to many local residents that may have had good reason to harm him. Lots of characters in this read, but they all contribute to the twists in the plot. A great summer suspense that will keep you guessing. Like Cluedo in book form. #localgonemissing #fionabarton

At last… A police thriller that makes use of a timeline. One of those things that lets you plan, summise and ponder over, just what is going on.

A small costal town, locals slowly being priced out of the area by city types snapping up ‘holiday’ homes.

Take one confidence trickster, conman and all round nice guy. And his sudden death, by less than natural causes. Embezzling the funds of both locals and the ctiy types. Investment funds that never seem to pay out beyond the first return.

Add into the mix one of the city types, and a mad money making scheme, and MDMA.

Enter our lead. A police woman who is returning to work, after a battle with cancer, and her nearly always on hand next door neighbour.

Local rumour mills, have spread various tales of woe. Painting anyone who stood still for long enough in a bad light.

An easily enjoyable read. I found that it flows well, and you do tend to lose time whilst reading it. I found that I had finished it within a couple of sittings, Over about 6/7 hours.

Status: Completed

Rating: 4.2/5.0

Loved the story of Elise King who moves into the sleepy seaside town of Ebbing. Illness has thrown her career as a successful detective into doubt, but no matter how hard she tries to relax and recuperate, she knows that something isn't right.
When 2 teenagers end up in hospital due to a festival and a local man goes missing and is found dead the town people have secrets they don't want anyone finding out about,
A gripping thriller with lots of characters that keep you guessing.
Highly recommend and looking forward to reading more of Fiona Barton books.

Local Gone Missing by Fiona Barton
I have read the three books in the Kate Waters trilogy, The Widow, The Child and The Suspect and was looking forward to this latest novel by Fiona Barton. The setting is Ebbing, a rundown seaside town and we quickly become familiar with the local characters.
There is Dee, a cleaner, whose husband is struggling to find work and so works all the hours she can cleaning for others. Then there is Charlie who everyone knows and who is busy raising money for various charities. His wife used to be a looker but is ageing fast and living in a mobile home does not quite fit with the image she would like to project.
Elise King has recently moved to Ebbing when a relationship broke down. She was a high flying, determined detective but she is now recovering from breast cancer and watching events happen through her window. Her neighbour, Ronnie, who is in her 60’s, would love to involve herself in some amateur sleuthing so when a local man goes missing Elise and Ronnie set out to try and track him down.
There are stories to unravel which date back many years and it is fascinating to see the way in which Elise worms her way back inside the investigation and the truths she uncovers which others have ignored. I did begin to piece some elements of the story together but there are too many threads to have unravelled them all before Elise.
I was kept engaged to the end and found the story involving. I liked the book but not quite as much as her earlier novels. I would however recommend this book to others and would like to thank the author, the publishers and Net Galley for the opportunity to read the novel in return for an honest review.

Elise King is a successful and ambitious detective--or she was before a medical leave left her unsure if she'd ever return to work. She now spends most days watching the growing tensions in her small seaside town of Ebbing--the weekenders renovating old bungalows into luxury homes, and the locals resentful of the changes.
Elise can only guess what really happens behind closed doors. But Dee Eastwood, her house cleaner, often knows. She's an invisible presence in many of the houses in town, but she sees and hears everything.
The conflicts boil over when a newcomer wants to put the town on the map with a giant music festival, and two teenagers overdose on drugs. When a man disappears the first night of the festival, Elise is drawn back into her detective work and starts digging for answers. Ebbing is a small town, but it's full of secrets and hidden connections that run deeper and darker than Elise could have ever imagined.

This is a gripping and thrilling read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.

Once a copper, always a copper and that's certainly true for Elise King who moved to the seaside town of Ebbing as a fresh start following the break up of her relationship and a recent cancer diagnosis. Although a newcomer she is welcomed more so than the weekenders who have invaded the town in recent years. When a local elderly man Charlie Perry disappears, a man she saw the same night at a local musical festival where two teenagers overdosed, she can't help but wonder what happened to him especially when he seemed so distressed.

The more we hear about Charlie, the more you realise that what you see is not necessarily what you get. There's a lot more to him than first seems, he's certainly lived an interesting life and there are many who want to find him for their own personal reasons. The deeper the investigations go, the more potential suspects are identified but it's only over time that the truth is finally uncovered.

There are quite a few characters to keep a track of as to who they all were and their connection to each other. And as we get to know more about them, we soon find that most have something to hide and they'd do whatever they can to cast suspicion elsewhere so as to prevent their own secrets being discovered. At first I did wonder why several seemingly outsiders were even mentioned but as the threads start to come together, everything begins to fall into place and make more sense.

I will admit that I needed to keep my wits about me, not just about who everyone was but to also follow the plot as the timelines skips back and forward in the days prior to Charlie's disappearance and the subsequent days afterwards. That being said, towards the latter stages of the book I didn't want to put it down for a second as I was eager to discover what exactly happened and why.

Local Gone Missing is a slow-burner of a mystery that is definitely worth a read. Now that Elise is back on the job, I hope it's not the last we've heard of her.
