Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book in return for an honest review. An interesting take on a run of the mill serial killer story. I really enjoyed the character development throughout the story and thought Mina and Vincent’s partnership was really good. I did find the book rather long and it did drag on a little around the middle of the book but the super ending more than made up for it. Definitely recommend. 4 stars.

Detective Mina Dabiri is facing a truly shocking murder investigation – a woman has been found dead inside a magician’s box and has been stabbed repeatedly with swords which would usually be part of an entertaining and harmless magic show. At a loss of where to start with this unusual case, she turns to Vincent Walder who is a celebrity mentalist, hoping that he can shed some light on the details of the murder. Mentalism is a subcategory of the wider ‘magic world’ so as well as being familiar with this type of magic trick, it’s also his job to be able to read people and think outside of the box to solve problems. However, despite providing her with vital clues to follow up, Mina is soon regretting her decision to take a risk and bring Vincent into the team. She begins to wonder if it’s more than just a coincidence that so many elements of the case can be traced back to him.

Scandi Crime is my favourite sub-genre of Crime Fiction and I’ve been a fan of Camilla Lackberg since I read The Girl in the Woods back in 2018. Despite already being a fan, I was really intrigued by this story and wasn’t sure what to expect. Trapped is co-written and focuses on a protagonist with a very unusual job, even if he is paired up with a more traditional police detective.

At 544 pages, it is a commitment to read but it’s worth making the effort. I think part of the reason I enjoyed it so much was that it had a serious Jonathan Creek vibe – a magician of sorts, teaming up with someone investigating a crime – and as a fan of that TV show, what could have been a strange set-up felt like a really natural pairing.

Trapped was a really unique take on a Scandi Crime novel, an entertaining story which had elements of humour and diverse characters as well as a typically dark murder investigation. I’m really looking forward to reading Cult, the second book in the series.

I was given the ebook and the audiobook of this novel and decided to listen to it. A very lengthy listen of 17hours ! It was a good storyline though I did feel that the authors ‘padded’ the storyline out with unnecessary chapters making the book a lot longer than it needed to be. The storyline was original and even though a bit of a slow burner to start ended up being extremely gripping making you want to listen/read that next chapter !
The narrator was good and very easy to listen too.

I've only read one previous Camilla Lackberg book, and wanted to get out of my cosy 'rut' a bit so thought this might do it. It sure did! But, my goodness, it was long. So long, in fact, I almost didn't start it because I knew it would take me ages to get through (surprisingly, it didn't take as long as I thought it would), but I'm glad I persisted and did read it in the end.

It's got a lot of characters in it, along with backgrounds for each one, so there's a lot of information to get through, some seemingly irrelevant, before it all comes together.

Mina and Vincent work very well together, although it's an unlikely partnership for the police, and think along similar lines so the murder gets wrapped up well in the end. Well-plotted, intriguing, dark, detailed - this book has it all, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to read it.

Really the only detraction is the length - hopefully the rest of the series entries won't be quite so meaty - as it could deter people from discovering a great new series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am really hoping that it will become the first in a new series of books. I loved the main characters and feel there is still a lot more to learn about them, especially Mina!

The story was pacey and held my interest right the way through all the action and the reveals. Some bits I didn't see coming but once they were explained it all made sense of everything that had happened.

A horrific murder where a woman has be found inside a magicians box pierced by swords. Min Dabiri believes that the mentalist Vincent Walter will be able to assist with the investigation and asks him for help. However, no sooner as they have started investigating the first murder another occurs in the same strange way. There seems to be a pattern and a count down; who will be next and will Mina and Vincent be able to stop them.

I both read an listened to this book and I loved both. The story with the strange murders and Vincent with his mentalist skills as well as his and Mina's personalities meant that I was gripped. As soon as I finished I felt like I could have read about another series of murders where they hopefully would be working together again. The book was gripping and easy to read and the narrator for the audiobook was engaging and interesting to listen to.

And Breath!..........WoW.....Trapped By: Camilla Läckberg, Henrik Fexeus and Narrated by: Helen Keeley. This is the first book in the new Detective Mina Dabiri and Vincent Walder series and WoW what a fantastic book/audiobook this was.
I was glued to my audio book from the very beginning and even my husband enjoyed listening to this as well.
This new book by Camilla Läckberg, Henrik Fexeus had lots of great twists and turns that will have you sitting on the edge of your chair and it will also give you goose bumps!

When a shocking murder of young single mum called Tova, was found trapped inside a magicians box and pierced with swords, But this time, it’s not a magic trick. It’s murder.

There are no clues of how she got there. Germaphobe Detective Mina Dabiri. has been called in lead the case. Knowing she has a terrifying killer on her hands she needs help and guidance. So she consults with master mentalist Vincent Walder to give insights into his magical world.

However, the countdown begins and there are three more murders.

Will they both catch this killer before more are murdered?

The Narrator Helen Keeley was excellent throughout. I loved it - my face showed it as well. This book is not for the faint hearted!

I highly recommend this book 5 star audiobook.

Big thank you to NetGalley and especially to Harper Collins UK, Harper Fiction for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review

When a young woman disappears on her way to collect her son and is then found brutally murdered in a very strange way, they approach Vincent Walder, a master mentalist for advice. When he spots something on the body that they had missed it indicates that there was a previous murder that they have missed.
They gradually piece the pieces together to crack the code and find that they are on a deadline and it's counting down.
Vincent has had to work hard to be accepted by the team and this is all put in jeopardy when his past is discovered and the closeness he has with Mina, the policewoman he has worked closely with, is shattered.
The story flicks backwards and forwards between the present and the early 1980s which fills out the background quite nicely.
I really liked this book as it had my attention from the start and is a great read.

Another good book from Camilla Lackberg. The style is similar to her other books with current events and flashbacks to the unidentified murderer. The crimes are really violent and graphically described. The characters are quirky and fun. The denouement is a bit improbable.

I have enjoyed so many of Lackberg's previous novels and this was another great one, with her co-author. This looks to be the beginning of a new series, which is exciting in itself. If you are reading the e-book, it's good to be warned it's over 500 pages. That said, it kept the momentum moving the whole way through and in the author's usual style, she skirts the line between exciting and unbelievable so well. Let's face it, if we read about real life we would be pretty bored.

The novel opens with a murder, a women inside a magician's box with swords pierced through her. Detective Mina Dabiri hasn't seen anything like it before and she is tasked to work on the case with her special team. Given magic isn't within their expertise, they enlist the help of magician and mentalist, Vincent Walder, to help create a profile of the killer.

This one was action packed and intriguing with the magic element. The characters' backstories running through this also kept me turning the pages and I look forward to more in this series.

I've always wanted to try a nordic noir.
I knew they're pretty longer in length compared to other thrillers, but this was a little too long for my liking.
That's the only complaint I have about the book.
Otherwise, I loved the plot and the writing.

Despite the length of the book I enjoyed every minute of it. I am a huge fan of Camilla Lackberg. This was a stand alone story but I do believe there will be a sequel which I will be very keen to read.

Julia Hammarsten heads up a special unit within the Stockholm police force that focuses on unusual cases or those requiring specific skills. The team comprises Mina Dabiri, Ruben Höök, Christer Bengtsson and Peder Jensen. Their first case is a gruesome and very unusual killing of a young woman who has been put into a box and run through with 3 swords, similar to a magician’s trick except for the deadly outcome!

Although everybody plays a part in this increasingly bizarre case it is Mina who is one of the lead protagonists. The other is Vincent Walder, a mentalist whom she recruits as a consultant. Vincent is extremely observant and has a great working knowledge of how many of the magic ‘tricks’ are performed. He is also a bit of a walking encyclopaedia. It is Vincent who notices some strange little cuts on the woman’s leg. Nobody thought much of it but he interpreted it as the Roman numeral III. It is also Vincent who identifies the nature of a previous death that had been wrongly assumed to be a suicide and, on finding the numeral VI on the body, assumes it is a countdown. Clearly there are more deaths to come.

The two main characters were wonderfully portrayed. Both of them a little socially awkward but they seem to click really well together. Vincent is obsessed with numbers and rituals and Mina is a germophobe of the highest order. While others mock her, Vincent is sympathetic to her foibles. The two become very close and you start to wonder if there will be some romance.

We also get flashbacks from 1982, insights into a dysfunctional family that suffered a great tragedy.

Vincent is convinced the solution lies in numbers and he becomes obsessed with trying to pick the pattern. Yet by now the rest of the team is questioning Vincent’s theories and some are even wondering if he could be the killer. After all, he knows all about these tricks!

Yet as the story progresses you become convinced the answers lie in the past and that something truly awful is about to happen. The pace is steady throughout until it starts to gallop towards the finish. There is a sense of impending doom through the whole story. I thought it was totally immersive and brilliantly plotted with many moving parts that the author kept skilfully in play. I found it highly entertaining. Many thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins UK, Harper Fiction for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

Trapped is the first in a new series by authors, Camilla Lackberg & Henrik Fexeus. I've read some Camilla Lackberg before but Henrik Fexeus is new to me. I picked this one up because I liked the premise and I am a huge fan of magic and illusion. I'm so glad I did because this book was amazing. The best thriller/mystery I have read in a long time. Just based on the strength of this one, I would auto-buy any further books in this series as well as other ones by these authors. This book ticks all the boxes you could ask for:
- Complex and multilayered plot
- Excellent twists and turns you won't see coming
- Flawed and interesting main characters you feel connected to
- Extremely well written
- Great length (not too short but not too long either)
- Gruesome and chilling crimes
- Gripping first chapter draws you in
- Thought-provoking enough to keep you thinking about it long after you finish

The book was suspenseful and hard to put down. I only stopped as I need to get some sleep but then picked it up again the next morning. The style reminded me of Jeffrey Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series.
I'd highly recommend this well-written, suspenseful crime thriller.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is llloooonnnggg! However, it did not drag and was a pleasure to read. All of the characters were interesting but I found Vincent’s marriage and divorce set up a bit silly and unnecessary. I am not sure what that added to the story. The crime was interesting to imagine, contemplate and to solve. I look forward to the next Lackberg/Fexeus collaboration.
