Paris 1572 - the St Bartholomew's Day massacre.

I hadn't read book one "The Religion" but was fairly able to follow the narrative. in this, book two, with his pregnant wife missing, Mattias Tannhouse journies to Paris to find her - and find himself at the centre of a political conspiracy. Romantic hero rescuing damsel in distress this is not. This lengthy tome, with its drawn out plot, and rising body count, is dark, gory, bloody and brutal. Which pretty much sums up the events of the day.
