I wasn’t honestly expecting to love this manga, but it was sooo soo good. Ellie and Omi kun are my new favorites and I can’t wait for Volume 2. There is character development and the plot is diverse yet one filled with humor . Having gone through a socially challenged phase I can relate Ellie so much. Perfect if you’re looking for a warm and fuzzy read .

I received a copy of this manga through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Our main heroine is an “invisible” but sweet girl who spends her days tweeting about fantasy romance with a boy who remarkably resembles her attractive and popular school mate. When said school mate starts to notice her it is a start of something wonderful but also frightening.😊
At times bit difficult to follow but mostly cute and lovable manga. It has some seriously swoon-worthy moments!🥰

Synopsis: Ichimura Eriko is a student who uses the alias "Ellie" on Twitter, where she tweets about an imaginary boyfriend, inspired by her crush at school: Oumi, the most popular guy). Because of destiny, she ends up listening to a private conversation with Oumi, with which he destroys all her ideas of him, because he is not as kind as she expected. And Oumi discovers Eriko's tweets under the alias of Ellie. Sharing secrets leads them to get closer and closer... and really get to know each other.

I have a conflict with this manga. At first the characters have seemed to me the extreme of their personalities; Ellie: extreme fantasy and intrusive; Oumi: cruel.
And as I progressed through the story, my perspective changed. I started to like that Ellie's perv side was recognized and normalized; and for Oumi to be showing how he really felt alone to her. But I still have this feeling that it's a demeaning relationship. Ellie has low self-esteem, and it hurts me every time she thinks that everything she does is going to upset Oumi, or that everything she does is wrong and that she can't talk about the bad things in her life because she thinks they're going to make him think she's tragic. And it doesn't help that Oumi doesn't know how to express himself so he reinforces these thoughts in Eriko, but then he does or says something nice and everything is forgotten, even Ellie gets more excited. Even I get emotional, and I don't think it's right.

❗This is a spoiler-free ARC review from NetGalley❗

There are so many other things I should be doing, right now. Like focusing on my studies, or starting my thesis, yet here I am reading a manga for teens and having the time of my life. I regret nothing.

I don't always go for the whole high school setting for my readings. More often than not, I find the stories and the romance a little too cheesy for my taste, and I have a little trouble relating to the teen protagonists, what with being an adult and all (not that I ever identified with them when I actually was a teenager...). BUT on rare occasions, I come across a high school story that is so amazing, takes me completely by surprise. This is one of them. I had so much fun with this one, guys!! It was so incredibly hilarious, it had me chuckling like a lunatic all by myself, and so freaking adorable, I was making unintelligible squealing noises not even animals could understand. Again...much like a lunatic. I feel like I'm gonna have to read it again soon. And then I'm gonna read the next volume, and the one after that a- well, you get the point. It's the sort of feel-good, cute little story that could definitely cheer you up if you're in a bad mood. It doesn't matter how old you are.

I absolutely ADORED the main characters. Two beautiful little weirdos, Eriko Ichimura the pervy hopeless romantic, and her crush the handsome, all-around perfect, and kind-to-all Ohmi with a super-fun little secret that Eriko stumbles upon one day. Literally, every single interaction between them was an absolute delight. Eriko is an excellent representation of a teenage girl with a huge crush on the prettiest boy in school. Her freak-outs were the best!! I definitely behaved in the exact same way as her at some point in my life (it did not go away with adulthood). I really can't wait to read more of those two crazy kids soon.

In case it wasn't already obvious, I highly recommend this manga.

No Spoiler Review

Plot:
Lovesick Ellie is a cute romantic comedy set in high school where we follow Ellie, a teen who fantasizes about her crush on Twitter using an alias. Her crush being the prince of her high school, Ohmi. She soon finds out he’s not as much of a prince as she had once thought and he turns out to be a devil jerk… or is he?

The main (possible) couple:

Ellie is a sweetheart who’s shy and has poor social skills which leads her to being ignored by people most of the time. She’s never really had a friend either.

Ohmi is the prince of the school, Mr. popular and his first impression is that he’s a jerk but he’s actually just misunderstood. He’s nicer than what he likes to admit because I think he wears his heart on his sleeve. It was really nice to see him opening up to Ellie.

Thoughts:

I decided to read this book because it seemed cute from the description and the cover. I have read manga with a similar plot before but it never gets old for me.

My initial thoughts while reading was that the book’s pacing was a bit too fast for the romance but I had to remind myself these characters are teens and it was more them being awkward instead of being romantic. And yes they’re pretty adorkable (am I old for using this word?)

Honestly, the story was at a 3.5 in the beginning until the characters own issues began driving the story even more. Once Ellie began to share more of her own personal issues, (her lack of social skills and constant self-doubt) and once Ohmi shared his too (insecurities, loneliness, hates being used by people) everything began to fall into place. I ended up finding myself rooting for Ellie to make her first friend and to see her self-worth more. And with Ohmi I found myself starting to like the guy, despite his rough first impressions. I kinda ship them together.

Would I read Volume 2?

Volume 1 has left on a cliffhanger, introducing a potential love rival and I’m so confused and excited for what will happen next! So yes I will read volume 2 because I liked this book a lot.

Final Rating:

5/5 because there was nothing I really didn’t like. I had a great time reading it. Yeah I know I said that generally I rate a book 5/5 if it’s life changing but I also do it if the book is just fun. Sometimes I base it on feeling.

I actually found this super cute! But sometimes I felt second hand embarrassment because of Ellie, but like in a dorky way, you know? I couldn't handle someone reading the tweets I wrote fantasizing about them. She's on another level, I would simply die. I really liked their relationship at the end, it develop well and I was rooting for them. Now I'm intrigued about those new characters and really want to know if they are persistente and stay with each other.

This was my first ever manga and it took me a while to get the hang of it. But once I did, I really loved the concept.

The characters are a bit irritating though, on more than one occasion I found myself cringing. However, despite that, I found the story to be sweet and as irritating as the characters were, they were also lovable.

Ohmi-kun, the class heartthrob, is a jerk to Ellie's (Ichimura) surprise. But the way his character is written, it seems like there's more going on which will probably be revealed in the coming volumes.

One thing that I had trouble wrapping my head around was the chemistry between Ohmi and Ichimura. With almost no contact they have this bond that's more than just attraction? I might be missing somethings here but that's not how I imagined this would play out. Wish we had more clarification on their characters and the chemistry.

I would absolutely love to find out more about it but I'm also apprehensive considering how uncomfortable certain scenes made me.

When fantasizing about romance, one must realize that the dream will be far from reality. That good looking girl or boy will not be perfect in every way; in fact, they might be the complete opposite of the dreamboat you think they are! The titular character in Fujimono’s Lovesick Ellie certainly finds this out the hard way, as her fantasy man is nowhere near the Prince Charming he thought he was.

Ichimura has no real experience with love. It’s so bad, that she pretends to have a relationship with class heartthrob Ohmi-kun online, under the Twitter handle “Lovesick Ellie”. But after stumbling on a conversation with his teacher, Ichimura falls and leaves her phone behind. Ohmi-kun returns the phone, but not before revealing that he knows her secret.

That’s when Ohmi-kun’s real personality starts to pour through his dreamy outer surface. He’s rude, blunt, and rather childish. This side of Ohmi-kun shatters Ichimura’s fantasy, but for some reason she finds a charming aspect of this side. As such, the two start a strange friendship that has the possibility of blossoming into a romance.

There are good parts about Lovesick Ellie that make it stand out from other shojo series. The back-and-forth between Ichimura’s real self and her Twitter persona. Online, she’s a jokey confident person; offline, she’s practically a wet noodle. These contrasts help to set the stage for certain comedic moments, as well as a good amount of heartfelt situations.

With that being said, it’s hard to be excited about Fujimono’s series after reading You’re My Cutie!! awhile back. The chemistry between Ichimura and Ohmi-kun are very similar to that of Madoka and Shikura, not to mention how the possibility of love coming to fruition being paced in the same way. After reading both, I can’t help but feel like Lovesick Ellie is lacking a certain charm that You’re My Cutie!! has, despite the latter being a merely good series.

Even as they try to have a tender moment — be it Ichimura making a friend or going to a local festival — there’s nothing here that makes me want to root for these two. They have a cute moment from time-to-time, but it doesn’t feel genuine enough to make me grow fond of their romantic journey. I do like that they’re attempting to make progress with Ichimura and Ohmi-kun, but it’s hard to latch on for the ride when these two are the least fun kind of hot messes in the manga genre.

Maybe it’s because I’m not this manga’s demographic, but Lovesick Ellie just couldn’t grab me. It’s pretty to look at, but as stories go it feels like it’s been one too many times already. The shojo manga world needs fresh blood and narratives, and this isn’t either of them. Simply put, Lovesick Ellie should be muted from any romance manga lover’s timeline.

This was so cute. It had the same vibe as Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji (which I also loveeed FYI). The characters were hilarious. I loved Ellie and Sara's friendship. They were both total weirdos and every time they interacted, I died laughing. Ohmi is an adorable tsundere as well. I can't wait to see how this romance will develop!
This is a cutesy shoujo manga. There are some tropes involved. Awkward girl Ellie falls for school heartthrob Ohmi. He’s prince-like around everyone else but tsundere around Ellie since he knows her secret. Ellie tweets her fantasies about Ohmi and Ohmi finds out, and so he’s comfortable showing her his true self. Romance ensues, with tons of misunderstandings between the two, and romantic progress takes awhile since they’re so awkward around each other.

I am happy to add this to my favourite manga pile. And I cannot wait for the second one! The ending has me ready for the next instalment. I definitely recommend it if you love shoujo romance with charming characters and great character development. I can tell there is so much more to come and I’m all for it.

Thank you so much to the publishing company, Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for providing me with a copy!!!

I love Kodansha Comics so much! They never fail to deliver the cutest shoujo manga out there.

The illustrations in this are on point. The illustrations were very well done.
However as far as the storyline goes…it wasn’t my favourite. The interactions between the main girl and boy had me CRINGING! To the point where it was hard for me to continue on…

Despite that, I won’t deny this manga had great character development. I enjoyed seeing the main girl grow as an individual. I loved seeing her get out into the real world and make real friends. And as for the boy, I loved how he was always there for her. Yes they are complete opposites, but suffer on inside the same way. It will be interesting seeing a deeper side to them both.

I am happy to add this to my favourite manga pile. And I cannot wait for the second one! The ending has me ready for the next instalment. I definitely recommend it if you love shoujo romance with charming characters and great character development. I can tell there is so much more to come and I’m all for it.

The ending just made me want to check out the second!

DNF

I liked the concept of this manga but once I started to get into it, I just wasn’t feeling the story or the characters.

The main character quickly got on my nerves and I wasn’t able to enjoy my reading experience. I think younger readers would really like this manga though!

This manga was really adorable and absolutely halarious. I really enjoyed the relationship that developed between Ellie and Ohmi. Ellie spends her time writing her secret fantasies about Ohmi on a twitter page and Ohmi is secretly a jerk who hides his real personality from everyone at school. It was super funny to see him drop his mask around Ellie and to see their reactions together. I died laughing evertime Ohmi teased Ellie about her fantasies. They are both self-proclaimed perverts but find a balance between their different types of weirdness. This is ultimately a manga about being able to be yourself and still finding those people who like you for you. There is also a heavy emphasis on friendship as we learn about Ellie's past and how difficult is was for her to make any friends and then watch her discover and explore a friendship with another female student. If you are looking for a funny, cute, romance, then I definitely recommend that you give Lovesick Ellie a read!

I really wanted to like this story, but I just couldn't get into it.

The male lead is not very likable. He likes our female lead yet cannot give up his sparkly image in public. This results in him mistreating her and then being nice to her in secrecy. The heroine deserves better.

The premise appealed to me, especially since I’m a fangirl as well. Unfortunately, this wasn't the cute shojo manga I thought it would be.

Ellie had zero personality, while the male love interest was boring and inconsistent. Together, they were just bland with zero chemistry despite some cliche cheesy moments that I typically swoon over in mangas. The story was flat and not to my taste either.

Nothing exceptional and I'm unlikely to continue with the next volume.

This book is the first manga book I have read and I didn’t know what to expect. The graphics were well done and the quirky characters were oddly likeable. Ellie is infatuated with a boy at school and makes fantasy posts on her social media about encounters with him. Then she realizes he may not be who she envisions him to be.

I did find the flow of the book difficult to follow at times as the word bubbles were layered in a way that didn’t lend to a logical conversation. I appreciate the opportunity to review this book.

This one is an absolute riot!

Laugh out loud funny on almost every page, and touching on the others. Poignant, irreverent and innocent in equal measure, the relationship between Ellie, who writes a fantasy blog about Omi-Kun (and has trouble separating the real world from the fantasy), and said Omi-Kun, who fails to match the fantasy in just about every way, is a hilarious take on how two misfits can be perfect for each other.

Situation comedy at its finest, and a beautiful romance at the same time. I call this a must-read for any comic comedy/romance fan. I can’t wait for book 2.

Lovesick Ellie is your basic shoujo/highschool romance manga. You have a shy, plain jane girl (Eriko/Ellie) who is crushing on the popular boy (Omi). She lives out her fantasy of dating him through a secret Twitter account.
The first chapter was a little confusing with what was being said by the characters vs what they were just thinking. It makes more sense and the characters become much more likable as the story progresses. There is a lot of awkwardness and teenage angst so if you can’t handle a little cringe this may not be for you.
Overall Lovesick Ellie was enjoyable but nothing new. It did end in a cliffhanger so I’m definitely interested in picking up the next volume to see how things progress.

Lovesick Ellie is a cute story about a shy (near invisible) girl who has created her own fantasy love story on twitter. One of the most popular boys being the inspiration. He of course finds out, and she finds out that he isn’t as wonderful as his public persona.

This isn’t a unique premise, but it’s executed nicely. Both main characters are interesting, and their dynamic is fun to weird. I also like this style of artwork.

Hoping to read the next volume.
