This is the third Laura Jane Williams book, I've read and she never fails, her writing is amazing. Her books, are heart-warming, romance books that are so cosy to read. Her books are packed full of flirty romance, awesome characters and guaranteed to give you all the feels, this one is no exception.

The characters are quite likeable and their living and employment situations make them interesting and different. Ruby’s strong female character is making huge strides with her “Year of Me.” something a lot of women will relate to. The chemistry between Nic and Ruby is brilliant, the other characters Jackson (Nic's Pansexual friend) for example really added to the story, he's funny, blunt, honest and just what everyone needs in a friend.

There were heavy topics including; Toxic relationships, ageing, death, serious accidents, miscarriage, STDs, and negative family dynamics, these topics all added a realistic aspect to the story.

And another shout out for fabulous LGBTQ rep.

Right person, wrong time!

Ruby is leaving for London, Nick just got there. A one night stand, and the rest is history! An enjoyable book with some interesting parts. Not the ideal happy ending I would have wanted but overall not a bad read.

I wanted to love this so much but it just wasn't for me. Maybe the next one will be more up my street.

This is another absolute smasher by one of my favourite authors. I'd been looking forward to reading this for ages and it didn't disappoint.

Laura has that ability to drag you right into the story from the word go and gives you every element for the perfect feel good romcom.

If you are in need of an easy read to pick you up or get you out of a reading slump this is the book for you.

A fabulous cast of characters that wouldn't be out of place in a Netflix film and a fantastic storyline that deals superbly with different relationship issues this left me feeling all the feels.

When I read The Lucky Escape I said that was my favourite of Laura's books but now One Night With You takes the crown!

Having enjoyed this author previously I instantly jumped at the opportunity to read this book, without looking at the blurb.,

Normally that works out really well for me, however on this instance although I enjoyed the book, I am starting to think the trope where the timing just never seems to be right for what should be a perfect couple, may not be for me, as it just frustrates me.

But that is my own problem, and despite that I did really enjoy the book.

I cared about the characters, and it was clear there was a connection between Ruby and Nic. I also enjoyed the story Ruby was telling with her documentary making. The sex scenes were well written, and I loved the look at love that this book displays.

It was entertaining, however maybe because of the trope, maybe for other reasons it just felt like it was missing an ingredient that would have made it into a much higher starred read for me.

It's a good book, and if you already like the author then I'd give it a go, but it's to my eyes not her best work, I'm afraid.

Sometimes you just need a book where you pretty much know how its going to end, but the journey to get there is like therapy for the soul!

This was a really lovely book - a meet cute with a difference, when Nic comes to collect a sofa he's bought on Facebook marketplace, he hits it off with Ruby - should be straight forward right? Except Nic's new in town just as Ruby is packing up to leave?

With adorable side stories about Ruby's university project and Nic's friendship with Jackson (Ruby's old roommate) this book really managed to make me smile, with the perfect mix of drama, romance and spice.

Would definitely read more by the same author.

This book was just ok. I found it hard to get into and just couldn't empathise with the main character Ruby.

Very well written but just missed the mark for me unfortunately.

This was a difficult book to read as it was just so poorly written and the plot was hard to follow. The start of the story starts so intense. The conversations don't make sense to me, potentially makes more sense to Londoners but I think if you write a book the dialect should still be understandable to readers out with the geographical location that the book is set in.

I couldn't engage with any of the characters they were just so unlikeable and pretty 2 dimensional. Ruby comes off as self centered and shallow. In addition, her mates are awful and you cannot like them. I think the fact Ruby had a relationship with a taken man also makes me not route for her. Nic is so boring. His character is basically him pining for Ruby and honestly that is just not what you want in a lead male character. There is no chemistry between these characters. It is possible to write chemistry where there is lust and no love but that is not done here.

Ending was dumb and it is fine to put one or two issues in a book but with this plot it was honestly like oh how many issues can I put in to try and make the plot interesting.

Most of this book feels like over written descriptions as if the writer is trying to make a word count. Overall it feels like poorly executed FanFiction but even with FanFiction you route for the characters to get together and you dream of having a man like the lead in your life.

I would not recommend this book. It is slow, dragging and I found it so unenjoyable to read and that is not what reading should feel like.

Hard to believe when you know that there will definitely be a happily ever after at the end of the story. And I’m here for it because I love them.

The first half of the book is slow and brings up a lot of secondary characters, scenes that make little sense, lots of inner thoughts and self growing emotions. Ruby felt quite self destructive and a very unlikeable character while Nic was really too good. But as usual, the opposite attracts.

The second part of the story is a different game altogether. Much more time together, interaction and emotional read. And quite a lot of redemption. That definitely saved Ruby from my red cards.

Not a total rom com per se as it deals with a lot more emotions and growth, but a good romance story overall that many readers will enjoy.

When I finished this book I thought “okay that was alright” but it’s been a couple of days now and I miss the characters and the story so much that it’s boosted my rating way up.

The first 20% of this book was complete and utter perfection. It was everything I want in a romance book. But then it was all taken away from me! The MC’s move away from each other so a lot of the book after that is following them individually and watching them grow. It was great but it felt like we were teased with the romance at the start and then we never got to have that back again which was super sad.

Nic was adorable (he blushes!). It was so endearing and I just wanted to smoosh his cheeks together. He became much more confident throughout the book but I kind of missed the awkward Nic at the start.

Ruby was a little philosophical for me. She would go on these long rants about art or other topics and I would struggle following it. I’d end up just skimming most of it.

Nic and Ruby’s first meeting was so sweet and I had the biggest grin on my face the whole time. This book proves why love at first sight is such a good trope (controversial I know). The idea that someone can get so swept away with someone else’s beauty is beautiful to me. Yes it’s unrealistic but it gives me heart flutters so I don’t care.

After her love affair with lying, cheating, Abe crashes and burns, Ruby decides to concentrate on herself for a change, she plans to leave her flatshare in London and has enrolled on a one-year documentary film-making course at Manchester University.

Nic has just split up from his childhood sweetheart, Millie, disappointing her and their families. He's too timid to go after anything he wants but has decided to move from Liverpool to London, spend some time with his little brother Ollie and reinvent himself (hopefully).

Nic and Ruby meet when he comes to buy her velvet sofa, sparks fly but how can either of them give up their dreams and plans for a one-night stand? But fate has a funny way of getting her own way, so when Ruby's former flatmate takes Nic under his wing it seems the two of them are moving in the same circles, or at least adjacent circles more than either of them had expected.

Fair warning, I have been on a real book downer for a few weeks but this just didn't do it for me. There seemed to be all sorts of plots swirling around, like Ruby's documentary about a WW2 veteran who has never forgotten the French girl he fell in love with all those decades ago and now wants to find her before he dies, or the falling-out with Ruby's ex-flatmate which get inflated into a BIG DEAL and then fizzle out. Also there are two big things that happen near the end of the novel which (to me) just scream that the author didn't know where to take the book next, and yet again they sort of fizzled into nothing. My overall feeling was that this was a very long novel about a woman who makes a couple of very strong life-choices and then forces herself to stick by them come-hell-or-high-water, for no good reason.

Now, where do I begin? This book was an enjoyable read. It basically centers around the theme of the right person wrong time. It was very heartwarming and at the same time, it was heartwrenching.

Ruby is leaving London to devote a year to herself, Nic is arriving in London to pursue happiness. Fate intervenes but how will this work? Life needs you to take risks even if that is scary. The introduction of JP added an extra dimension to the story. I absolutely loved this book, my first Laura J Williams. Highly entertaining.

It's Ruby's last night in London, taking the leap to complete her Master's degree in Manchester. Breaking up with her on-again, off-again boyfriend Abe (who is actually dating someone else and she was the side piece) after a recent trauma opened her eyes to some life decisions. Packing the last of her belongings she is waiting for a guy to come and collect the sofa loveseat she listed on Facebook Marketplace.

Moving from Liverpool to London, Nic is going to be closer to his brother, starting a new job and taking stock of his life. Splitting up with his long term girlfriend after realising it was not the life he wanted. He meets Ruby and her housemates when he comes to collect a sofa. Instantly drawn to Ruby but isn't confident to say anything. Luckily, Jackson helps him move the sofa sn invites him back to the houseshare for pizza and beer.

One night together is all they were ever supposed to get before Ruby started her 'Year of Me' and Nic navigates starting again in London. An STD has them getting back in touch which enables them to communicate via text regularly. Ruby's film project throws up unexpected friendships, revelations and life lessons, but just as things appear to make way for her and Nic more curveballs are thrown their way and heartbreaking decisions need to be made. Tissues at the ready.

This was the first Laura Jane Williams book I have read but had high hopes as her other books are well liked.

I really enjoyed the fast paced intro where we meet the majority of the main characters and things hear up quickly. Nic is a loveable character but unfortunately for me, the others weren’t.

I wasn’t very interested in the sub plot either, it just didn’t keep me engaged in the book and I found myself skimming parts.

The writing was easy and light and the author ensures she provides diversity amongst characters.

However for me it was just a bit too ‘silly’. I know her other books are hyped so I definitely will be reading more of the authors work.

I was expecting a lighthearted rom-com, however this book is not quite so funny. I could not engage with Ruby, which made reading the book quite difficult. This story had a lack of focus that an editor could have helped. I didn't enjoy the wandering plot points that really had nothing to do with the story. This book wasn't for me.

This was a quick, cute read with a predictable happy end - just with a few bumps along the way. As in her other books, the author does a fantastic job of including secondary characters and friends in the narrative, and of allowing space for questions and quiet crises of identity, self-worth. At the same time, the voices of the characters (both inner and outward) were funny, quirky and heart-warming. Not an earth-shatteringly important read, more like rom-com comfort food - and that definitely has a place in my reading diet.

When a chance meeting throws them together, it’s clear this could be something special. But with the timing off, they agree just one night and after that they’ll never see each other again.

Will they?


I have read a couple of books by Williams now and I have to say I find them hit and miss. Unfortunately, this one fell into the so-so category for me as it just didn’t seem to get anywhere.

I felt the premise of the story was a good one, but it seemed to go off on several different tangents and with it I lost focus frequently. The second half of the book was better, it felt more real and emotional, but it wasn’t enough to win me back.

As for the protagonists, Ruby was self-absorbed and therefore hard to like, and Nic was just too nice!

This was an ok read, maybe to flick through quickly on the beach over the summer but if you’re looking for a rom-com that has a lot of laughs along with some character arcs this probably isn’t the one for you.
