A woman is found brutally murdered in her home surrounded by strange objects; her husband is nowhere to be found. Is this a straightforward murder by a spouse or is it something more sinister?

This was my first Simon Toyne novel and it won't be my last as Dark Objects was both chilling and thrilling. The murders themselves were gripping to read and I loved that at first seemingly random/strange that all roads led back to a dark past and the emotional damage that follows victims of crime

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review

This was such a clever crime book. it was filled with twists and turns throughout. This was my first Simon Toyne and not my last. It was fast paced and kept the reader gripped. The short chapters made it so easy to continue reading.

the plot of the book is intricate, quick and filled with twists and turns. The brutal murder but with loads of hints, signs and more. What do they all mean?

It was very interesting to read. Just when you think you've cracked it, another plot twist happens.

Thank you to Simon and Netgalley for allowing me this ARC.

After seeing Simon Tony speak at the Bristol Crime Fest in 2022, I wasted no time in picking up this book, and boy, I wasn't disappointed. Tony has created a masterful police procedural/mystery here that feels some much more than your average cop investigation. The characters have real depth and personality, and he has plotted the tension builds masterfully. His antagonist is bloody creepy, an really set me on edge in the climax, which is rare for someone who reads so much crime. Plus what a twist at the end. I can't wait to read Book 2, The Clearing, as DARK OBJECTS is masterful!

This is an excellent novel by Toyne with a highly memorable twist.

A seemingly bizarre crime scene leads to a labyrinth to arrive at a startling destination.

I have read Toyne before and will gladly do so again.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Dark objects by Simon Toyne is a fast paced, well written thriller. Great characters and a fab storyline which leaves you guessing…. and wrong! This book hooked me pretty immediately and didn’t let go. A bright and fastidious policeman alongside a clever damaged criminologist proved to be a great partnership. Lots of unanswered questions about identities and motives and an opportunistic journalist add to the suspense and pace. Most definitely a five star read.

This was a great police procedural style thriller - told from differing perspectives; we get Laughton Rees herself, her father, the detective in charge of the murder case and the reporter who is involved, it was great to see how all these different peoples lives intertwined and wove through the story. The pacing in the book was fast and it had shorter chapters which is something I enjoy in a police procedural as it keeps things moving and story flowing. I enjoyed the plot of the book itself - character back story was a key component for the murder plot however I felt like the personal lives of the characters and the main plot was balanced very well. I'm looking forward to reading book two alreeady!

This is the best story I have read for a while. I was kept gripped throughout and wanted to get to the end and, even then, was surprised by the final twist.

There is a sensible number of characters, all with good descriptions and backgrounds. They all have an impact on the story and are all relevant. I got so caught up in the drama of the story that I completely forgot about the narration of the person who had orchestrated and planned the murders in the first place.

I finished the book nodding with approval and would definitely recommend it to friends.

I'm a fan of Simon Toyne, particularly his Solomon Creed character so I was keen to read this book. It didn't disappoint. It's easy to read with good characters and there are twists aplenty. Laughton Rees is another good creation with the appropriate skills and hang-ups to maintain your interest. In short, Mr Toyne does it again.

An intriguing murder mystery with plenty of twists and turns, with an ending you won't see coming. A promising start to this procedural series.

Dark Objects is an excellent psychological thriller with some engaging characters. The ending is perhaps a little too neat, but the journey to get there is very readable.

The novel has two main characters - DCI Tannahill Khan, a London homicide detective, and forensics expert Dr Laughton Rees. A brutal murder sees Khan investigate and find a copy of a book by Rees placed beside the body. But what is the connection?

The plot is intricate and has many separate strands. The pace becomes a little slow in the middle section of the novel, but picks up again as the conclusion nears. Without spoilers, the plot has many layers and as each is revealed we learn more about the man characters' past.

Overall, Dark Objects is well written and draws the reader into an involved scenario where several past events lead to the current murder case.

Dark Objects by Simon Toyne

I've read everything Simon Toyne has read. He has written some of my favourite mystery thrillers. So Dark Objects is something very different from this author - crime fiction/psychological thriller with some political undertones. I wasn't convinced by the ending but, as always, I enjoyed the author's writing. He knows how to set a scene, it's very visual and menace seems to lurk in every shadow!

A really suspenseful and very different crime thriller. Objects left at the scene are meaningful, but there are twists and turns which leave you turning the pages faster. Great book!

Thank you Netgalley and Hapercollins for a great read as always from Simon
That was good! Really well written and a bit different. The ending was a bit sudden and not what I expected. I hope there will be more with Tannahill and Laughton I feel a series!!
If the ending had been a bit better and not so quick it would have been 5 stars

A brilliant thriller, a well written story, this had me on the edge of my seat quite a few times and I actually felt dread as the crime scenes unfolded.

Laughton Rees is a single mother, lecturer and writer who gets tangled up in the latest crime. Tanahill is the detective who will try to solve it.

I really enjoyed how the whole story came together with quite a few surprises along the way.
I will definitely be looking out for more books by this author.
