Told in two time lines, in 2018 Elizabeth is reaching her 100th birthday. Her carer, Tali, persuades her to go to a meeting of the Century Society. In 1944, she is preparing to parachute into war torn France as a member of the SOE. The one bit of advice she remembers so clearly is - trust nobody - a mantra to live by.
I’ve read quite a few books in this genre over the last 12 months and it amazes me that authors can keep coming up with different and intriguing ways of portraying these brave souls doing things that no one should have had to do. And doing it so selflessly. Evocative of the era, the wartime scenes, in both England and France feel so real, the tension is palpable. It’s nicely paced, well written and a really good read.
