I loved the art style here but the story was lacking and sometimes hard to follow.
(Graphic novel not available on Goodreads to review.)
Thanks to NetGalley for the eArc.

I believe this title was Paining My Life the Maze. The art was beautiful but I struggled to follow the story.

The summary given really want unfortunately I'm not packed too rough. This story would deserve additional work if the author enters the story, it may be necessary to turn differently or she can make changes in the story and draw or not but not a mixture

I received a copy of ‘‘Painting My Life: The Maze’’ from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
So here it it !!!

My rating : 1 ⭐️

This is a story about a painter named Alice who can enter her paintings and, so, visit worlds hidden BEHIND the canvas.

I requested this book because I love graphic novels and I found the plot original, intruiging and exciting … Sadly it’s as far as it went...

More than once I’ve been tempted to DNF the book (something I rarely do and hate doing …).

All the comics long, the artwork is mostly bland.
The story was fragmented, it’s pretty unclear who some of the characters are, the theme bounces around from choosing to embrace darkness or to only embrace happiness and the messages it sent were wavering between totally incoherent and quite logical for what I figured out. It was seemingly that you have to face your fears in real life, not hide in a dreamworld. But I can’t be sure because it wasn't an easy task to READ ‘cause in addition of the plot being a huge & farfetched mess full of dead ends (especially without ANY background about Alice … yep, I had to go back and check that this was Volume 1 of Alice’s adventures & nope, absolutely NO explanations are given whatsoever) even with the proper software (the required Adobe Digital Editions) & in full screen view on the laptop — with a 19’’ large screen and a great graphics card !!! — it was super hard to read the protected Epub received as an ARC because of the poor quality of it … The already not great graphics were mostly blurred and the dialogue bubbles where more often than not unreadable.

It just didn't work for me so I won’t lose any more time on this.

FYI : I usually post my reviews on, at least, Goodreads but the book has seemingly been removed from there (it vanished from my reading list. So, this review is not shared on any other site.

I liked the brightness of the colouring but that was about it. I really couldn’t understand what was happening in the story. The story focuses on Alice who is a painter who can enter into the worlds she paints. She enters into a world where goblins are at war with witches and the goblins want Alice to stop painting or something. That’s when the story began to be messy and I wasn’t quite sure what was happening. This one is obviously not for me.

Copy received from Netgalley in exchange for an unbiased review.

This book was not it. I was so confused and felt like I was thrown into a random story that was undeveloped.

It is not often that I DNF a graphic novel... because they don't take all that long to read anyway. But I did DNF this one about a third of the way through. There were just too many elements that really didn't work for me. The writing felt very forced and nothing like how people actually talk or think. I was completely lost when it came to the plot. I had to go back and check that this was Volume 1 because no explanations are given whatsoever, but there are a lot of references to past events. None of it made any sense. And then there was the art which varied between 'it's okay' to 'yeah... not great'.
I loved the sound of this and had quite high hopes for it, but it really just didn't work for me.

Painting My Life: The Maze is a story about a woman who is a painter, and can enter worlds via her paintings.

The cover art is absolutely beautiful.

The story, for me, was lacking. There were a lot of loose ends, such as who Michael is. I was also confused about who he was in the maze world. I am not sure I understand the message behind who the gargoyles are supposed to symbolize.

The repetition of "I won't stop painting" became monotonous. People kept telling her to stop painting. Why?

Overall, I felt the story was just not fleshed out. I think it has a lot of potential. However, the skeleton of this particular story just didn't do it for me.

I was super excited to read Painting My Life: The Maze after hearing the description. The concept - being able to enter paintings and experience what is happening inside those created worlds - is enticing. The cover art was also appealing and, combined, I was drawn in.

My experience in it was something totally different, however. The artwork was mostly bland with an occasional panel that really captured the author's intent. The story was fragmented and wavered between incoherent and on-the-nose-messaging. It was unclear who some of the characters were and the theme bounces around from choice to embracing darkness to only embracing happiness.

There is so much untapped potential in this story - as much potential as a blank canvas. If the artist used their entire palette, this could be a real winner..
