I really liked how the book was structured (patterns divided into the three countries of inspiration: Norway, Sweden, and Iceland), that the patterns were clearly written and easy to follow, and I especially enjoyed the little tidbits of on the pattern and the inspiration. However, the styles in the book didn't appeal to me. They weren't modern and some were too oddly shaped for me to want to make them.

This is a full color book of 44 patterns. The book shows you the picture that inspired the project which I found very quaint seeing old artifacts and a new very similar pattern. The book is divided up into three different sections
1) Norwegian Handknits, 2) Swedish Handknits, and 3) Icelandic Handknits and then has the stories that go with them. I also loved the fact that measurements were given in both imperial and metric.

I have a few projects now inspired by this book.

Should I wait for winter to start on one of these knits or should I start now to better enjoy it during the cold days and nights? The instructions were very easy to follow and I can’t wait to show off a finished piece. Now I just have to finish that cable sweater first!

This is a lovely book, full of interesting projects along with stories to go with them. As a knitter with skills that are at best barely above beginner's level, I find them a bit intimidating, but reading the directions makes me feel like there's a chance I can successfully attempt at least some of them. The photos are beautiful, and the historical info that's given with some of the patterns is fascinating. I can't wait to dive in more deeply with yarn and needles in hand.

Nordic Knits is a collection of 44 cozy knits from Norway, Iceland and Sweden. The patterns consist of mostly accessories with some sweaters, a skirt and a few home accessories. You will find them all very stylized and I wouldn’t describe them as modern. But if you appreciate history and tradition, you will find these pattern interesting.

There are a wide variety of techniques that you will use in these patterns. You will find a lot of two color work because way back when, the addition of a second color offered some extra much needed warmth. The knits needed to be very durable. But aside from their function, there is a lot of creativity that goes into these patterns and knitters can express themselves and their history in each garment. You will find them colourful and steeped in tradition. It was customary for a bride to knit mittens for her bridal party.

You get a small description of the meaning of each knitted item before the pattern. What the designer did was take a traditional item, for example ski socks and pulled from the pattern to create a hat.It is good to see how you can interpret an idea into a new garment if you are interested in designing your own knits. A snapshot of the original item is sometimes included.
I would say that this is for intermediate and advanced knitters simply because there are a number of techniques in each one and not a lot of explanation or photos. There is a few pages at the end of the book for abbreviated terms and some of the techniques, but it isn’t thorough so without some experience it might become frustrating for new knitters. But if you want a challenge, by all means, dive in!

Overall, this one isn’t for me. There are a few patterns I might try but not enough for me to purchase the book. If it was more about the history and tradition, I would invest in a coffee table knitting book, but that isn’t what this is either. But if this style of knitting is something that you would like to try, then you should take a look at Nordic Knits.

The patterns were interesting, and the explanations were for people with a moderate amount of experience, as it should be for anyone attempting colourwork!
I was unable to complete any project before my e-copy of the book expired, so I cannot give a full-length review of how the instructions actually worked. Maybe if I purchased a physical copy, I can alter my review at a later time.

Good patterns, Good instructions. Can get you hooked on all things Nordic. Start with the simpler ones and you will find challenges as you go.

This book has some really fun and easy to follow patterns. Would recommend to both beginners and those who are a bit more experienced knitters. These patterns make great wintertime gifts to friends and relatives.

I enjoyed the tidbits about the knitting history of the various Nordic countries, and some of the patterns looked interesting, but most were just not my style (too busy and too weirdly-shaped).

As a yarn shop owner, I look forward to having this book in my shop! Each pattern is well written with attention to detail and a complete comprehension to every pattern.

Nordic Knits is a beautiful Scandinavian knitting pattern book with lots of additional information including the history of Norwegian knitwear. There of 44 wintry patterns for hats, scarves, socks, sweaters and lots more. Even though some of the patterns are quite intricate the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. The photographs and illustrations are beautiful and will inspire any knitter to try one of the patterns.

This is a fabulous collection of Nordic inspired knits.

I loved the range of patterns and techniques presented in the book. Whilst I have started one of the kinits, it will take me some time to complete but I am enjoying the skill challenge.
Not a book for an absolute beginner but excellent for someone with some experience.

This book has lovely knitting patterns with charts and easy to read instructions detailing colorful Nordic patterns.

Sue Flanders, Janine Kosel and Hélène Magnússon are presenting "Nordic Knits: 44 Beautiful Patterns to Knit and Keep You Cozy", published by Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry. The book contains 44 designs (sweaters, hats, socks, mittens, scarves, ...) that present the Nordic style of knitting. It is divided into three parts: 1) Norwegian Handknits, 2) Swedish Handknits, and 3) Icelandic Handknits. The authors do not only present the various designs but also information about the inspiration and pattern notes. The book is very inspirational for knitters. It is colorful and attractive with a great design and photographs. I recommend it for knitting enthusiasts who want to go farther in their knitting, for those who are interested in more than the standard patterns. It is also a great present for them. The book comes abbreviations, information about special techniques, yarn weight system, yarn resources, and an index that is helpful to find a specific information. The fact that the book offers the measurements in inches and centimeters merits already five stars, but it would have been also helpful if the patters would have been included in a downloadable file that knitters who are, e.g., traveling would not have to take the whole book with them.

This is an intriguing book full of knitting patterns based on and inspired by traditional Nordic knitting – hats, scarves, gloves, sweaters and more. The book is well laid-out, with pictures not only of the finished works, but also images and historical tidbits to inform the reader as to what inspired the pattern. The patterns themselves are clearly written with helpful hints as necessary explaining various techniques. The book has a plethora of patterns, some easier and some more difficult, but any knitter with interest in historical technique and style would find the book intriguing.

A beautiful book filled with patterns from the Nordic countries. What I especially loved was the bits that inspired the specific pattern - the history and the pictures.
The patterns are well-laid out and well written with clear pattern charts and explanations. I can't wait to tackle a few of them - especially the Step Rose Cushion and the Broken Rose Blanket from the Icelandic Knits section plus one or two others. Will be hard work deciding which to do first.

A lovely knitting book with a Nordic slant on design and knitted accessories.. I love the Bridal Winple which looks very elegant and warm, there are bags, hats, socks, mittens, easy to knit jumpers shapes, lovely shawls and I love the tall shaped hats. The color and patterns is enough to brighten any cold day, and the variety of patterns means there is something for everyone - from the beginner to the experienced - kits to make for someone special or just for oneself - this book has it all.

“Nordic Knits” showcases 44 beautiful patterns, ideal for knitters already familiar with fairisle knitting. There is some great variety here, with patterns for clothing, accessories, and household decorative items, and each comes with clear charts and great photos.

I especially loved the little sections that accompanied each pattern which showed a historical piece of knitwear that inspired the designer’s new take. It really gave the Nordic context to each piece and will be of great interest to anyone interested in the history of textiles and fairisle knitting.

There is beautiful color work showcasing Norwegian, Swedish, and Icelandic inspired patterns with pictures of the original inspiration garment. With beautiful photographs, you could display this even when you aren’t knitting from it.
