We get it, you're vegan. I wanted to like this story but I struggled with all of the mixed messages. I also felt unsatisfied with the progression of some of the main characters

This dystopian world where animals ruled just wasn’t my thing. The dark themes coupled with my disinterest in the world meant that I couldn’t completely enjoy the story as I found it hard to imagine and immerse myself in this world. Perhaps if there was more attention on explaining ‘the changing’ I would be more invested, but I didn’t have a good understanding of how the animals came to rule.

However I can absolutely see how this would be enjoyed by others who enjoy this specific niche of the dystopian genre.

I did enjoy the character of Peridot and her determination to experience something outside her sheltered world.

The writing was quite formal, a style which doesn’t match my reading preference so it felt cumbersome rather than flowing. This added to my discomfort of the world enough for me not to really enjoy this book.

I can see that I was not the target reader for this book.

Peri lives an extremely sheltered life with an overprotective mother, and resorts to learning about the world through books and video clips.

Until one day she meets a boy from the mainland.. turns out her mother's been keeping quite a few secrets from her.
If you like nature and you're an animal lover, and you like fantasy books with magic systems - then this book is for you.

What a gorgeous cover does this book have? I love it! A story that I couldn't put down, animals that can talk, such as angry chickens in the prologue, set me up for this brilliant story. There are numerous great things along with sad things that happen along the way to the characters that one moment I could be chuckling and the next feel rather bad for them. This is the sign of a great book, the fact I connected with the characters.
It is part one of a trilogy and I for one am so looking forward to the next book.
