A classic for a reason, from the mother of romance herself.
Still somehow relevant and poignant, this was truly ahead of its time.
Funny, witty, sarcastic and sharp, but not any less sweet and lovely than you expect.

Memorable characters, that you either love or love to hate, dialogue that stays with you, lessons you don't forget.

This is one of those books for me that I can pick up at any point in time and it'll put a smile on my face.
I've read it countless times, in multiple formats, experienced it in various editions, and surely I'll only ever keep adding to that list.

This audiobook version performed by British icon Adjoa Andoh, who lends her clear and resonant voices to these iconic characters and this much beloved story.

It shall always remain: a classic for a reason.

Pride and Prejudice (Premium) by Jane Austen
Narrated by Adjoa Andoh
P & P by Jane Austen. I can honestly say this is one of very few books worthy of five stars in my opinion.
On to the narration by Adjoa Andoh. I have listened to several audio versions of this book and this one is outstanding. It is done with verve and vigor. I loved the prim and prissy voice given to Mr. Collins and the voice for Mrs. Bennett is shrill but that is appropriate for her. I also liked the Northern accent for Mr. Darcy. It made sense because Derbyshire abuts Yorkshire and it makes him sound very manly. Altogether it was an absolute joy.
When this becomes available on Audible I will definitely use a credit to keep it forever.
I would like to hear this narrator do her version of Persuasion.

Pride and Prejudice is, of course, a classic, and I was excited to see a new audio performance. And it is a stellar performance indeed, giving each character their own distinct voice and bringing them to life. This is definitely a new favorite way to experience the classic story.

This was a delightful way to experience a classic, especially not having read it in years! I've enjoyed Adjoa Andoh's narration before (specifically narrating Ann Leckie's The Raven Tower), but I was especially excited to hear her perform Pride and Prejudice. She does not disappoint at all in this regard. Her voices for Elizabeth, Darcy and other sensible characters are perfectly appropriate, but you can almost sense how much fun she is having when she voices the dull and serious Mr. Collins and the overbearing Mrs. Bennett. If I could give this narration an 11/10 rating, I would.

Pride and Prejudice is a timeless classic that holds up on rereading. I enjoyed revisiting this world and these characters, especially now that I have a better understanding of entails, inheritance, and the other complexities of regency society. Elizabeth and Darcy''s romance continues to be incredibly compelling, as they end up truly bringing out the best in each other by the end of the tale.

All in all, a wonderful experience. Adjoa Andoh's narration and "Pride and Prejudice" are a perfect match.

Pride and Prejudice: this book is a classic. It is the perfect enemies to lovers story. I have read this book before but wanted to hear this audio version. The narrator depicted Mrs. Bennett’s personality perfectly, in my opinion. I enjoyed this version of the book.

I love Pride and Prejudice but I've never listened to an audiobook version. Adjoa Andoh was an absolutely fabulous narrator and I fell in love with this book all over again. Her voice is so animated and when it's such a long book it can sometimes be easy to lose interest but not with this version. Truly brilliant.

A classic, hard to believe still is so beloved today. I have rediscovered Pride and Prejudice, it didn’t make much sense to me fifty years ago as a teenager. I did watch a few movies, but in my opinion nothing beats a book. The narrator was fantastic, with so many characters it was a amazing feat! As a audiobook that many characters did getting confusing at times, but with the different voices used, it helped greatly.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC. I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story. #NetGalley #JaneAusten

This audiobook will be published on Feb 22, 2022.

This is my first time reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (and was lucky enough to get approved for the audiobook narrated by the amazing Adjoa Andoh). For a first-timer, this audiobook surely did its magic and gave Jane Austen's world justice. The narration and pace were good! Especially the parts where she did different characters' lines. I understood the pronunciations clearly as well as the diction. Kudos to a well-made audiobook! Would definitely recommend it!

Thank you so much to Saga Egmont Audio and NetGalley for the ALC!

I’m always excited by an opportunity to look afresh at my favourite book and had high hopes because I enjoy Adjoa Andoh’s acting.

Unfortunately, I was really disappointed with this version as there were some very strange choices as to voice, pitch and accent, some of which really fight the text.

As well as being a classic romance, P & P is a social satire and a commentary on the class system. The Longbourne family are middle class but Mrs Bennett’s family are in trade and they are the least well-off of the main families, compared to the Bingleys, de Burghs and Darceys. Why the narrator decided to give the Bennett’s all RP English accents, whereas Darcey and his friends all sound like they have escaped from Wuthering Heights, I have no idea. If the aim was a Derbyshire accent, which would still be an odd choice, then it missed by some distance, as it was definitely what Southerners think is a Yorkshire accent.

In a similar vein, Mrs Bennett and Lydia were both too shrill and Elizabeth too deep and masculine much of the time.

With the exception of the evil person who injected zombies into the mix, there’s not much you can do that can ruin P & P for devotees but there are better audiobook versions.

With thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher, Saga Egmont Audio for an arc of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

The premium edition of Pride and Prejudice is the same beloved story Jane Austen penned years ago, but it is now read with linguistic precision by Adjoa Andoh. The enemies-to-lovers romance takes the reader back to the 1800's, where families of a certain status introduced their daughters into the society of men who could promise them a rise or a maintenance in class. Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and her parents live a quiet, practical life in rural England, but the news of a wealthy bachelor taking up a residence in their small area invites the possibility of marriage for one of the five young ladies. The young man, Charles Bingley, brings a company to his home, and among them is Fitzwilliam Darcy. At first, Elizabeth and her family are completely taken by the amiable Mr. Bingley, and they aren't fond of the arrogant Mr. Darcy. However, sometimes even the proudest of men can be encouraged to change if the objects of their affections will dismiss their prejudices.
Over the years, I had heard bits and pieces of the story, but this is the first version to which I listened completely. Jane Austen's words were beautiful, and at times I wondered if I was listening to poetry. The author has a beautiful style, and her characters are well-rounded. Adjoa Andoh read the book with unfailing enthusiasm. The tiniest change in inflection was a clear indication of a switch from one character to another, and condescension and spirit were clear in her voice when she read the parts of certain characters.
I recommend the book to any reader who enjoys classic, sweet, and/or historical romances. I was provided an audio copy of the book by NetGalley, as this version will be available on February 22, 2022.

There’s nothing new for me to say about the greatness of Pride and Prejudice, but it was a real joy to revisit this novel (something I’ve been meaning to do for a long while) for the first time since I last read it in 2011 while studying abroad in England. Adjoa Andoh’s narration is lovely and gives new life to this classic.

My thanks to Saga Egmont Audio for a review copy of the unabridged audiobook edition of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen in exchange for an honest review. It is narrated by Adjoa Andoh and has a running time of 12 hours, 33 minutes at 1x speed.

‘Pride and Prejudice’ is one of my all time favourite novels and over the years I have read it a number of times though this is my first time experiencing it as an audiobook. It brought a new dimension to the story, with the satirical aspects being more obvious when delivered by a gifted voice actor.

Adjoa Andoh is not only a celebrated British actor with numerous stage, radio, film and television credits but has a narrated over 200 audiobooks, both individually or as part of a cast.

She has a rich voice and a wide range. I found her especially effective with the more comedic aspects of the story. Her shrill Mrs. Bennett was almost like listening to chalk on a blackboard though this conveyed the essence of the character. Like her daughter Lydia, she is a flibbertigibbet, yet it highlights aspects of the Bennett household.

Overall, a delightful audio adaptation of this classic comedy of manners.

I just finished it and it was the first time for me to hate reading/listening to one of my favorite books which is Pride and Prejudice. I didn't like the narrator's voice at all and I didn't want to DNFed it because it's P&P and I can't do that to JA. It was really horrible when she tried making other characters' voices like the one of Mrs.Bennet or Lizzy or the girls' uncle and so on.
All in all, I love P&P but this audio version was bad due to the narrator.

When you think that Jane Austen's classic cannot get any better, here comes Adjoa Andoh and brings it to perfection. Listening to her reading Pride and Prejudice aloud is like having a premier seat at the theater. I loved every minute of this audio book.

Pride & Prejudice is one of the most loved and widely adapted of Austen’s works. Since it was first published in 1813, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice has sold over 20 million copies, and is now one of the most recognizable names in British literature. Though it was written over 200 years ago, it remains relevant. Not only is it a beautifully written love story with a happy ending, but it contains timeless insights about human nature that reminds readers that first impressions can often be wrong.

I recently re-read Pride and Prejudice and have come to the shocking realization that I am Mr. Darcy. Besides the fact that he is the big book collector of the story, (What a delightful library you have at Pemberley, Mr. Darcy!”), I identified a lot with the mental health struggles his character face. After this new look at the text, I noticed a lot of details that made me view Darcy’s character less as prideful and more as socially anxious.

Mr. Darcy has definitely been conditioned to take pride in his riches and status, and he comes off as arrogant, standoffish, and cold. But the more Elizabeth learns about Darcy’s life and family, the more she hears people singing his praises. His sister adores him, his cousin admires him over anyone else in the world, Bingley trusts him implicitly, and even the housekeeper at Pemberley refers to him as “the sweetest, most generous-hearted boy in the world.” As the story progresses, it becomes less believable that he is the cold, pretentious character that his previous public appearances made him seem. I think this is pretty common for people with social anxiety, especially those who hide it well.

The word “anxiety” is used 19 times in the text, and “anxious” is used 28 times. (For anyone curious, Pride is used 48 times, and prejudice is used just 7 times!)

Social anxiety is a mental health condition characterized by fear and self-consciousness in social settings. People with social anxiety are often afraid that others are judging them and consistently worry about potential embarrassment. These extreme fears are often irrational, but to those with social anxiety they feel painfully real. Social anxiety can hinder sufferers’ ability to interact with new people, participate in social functions, or speak up in large group settings. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 7% of Americans suffer from social anxiety. Though the condition is not uncommon, it doesn’t receive a lot of attention, which can leave people with social anxiety feeling lonely and misunderstood.

The reader is introduced to Darcy’s social anxiety the moment we meet him. At the ball, he refuses to dance, saying: “I certainly shall not. You know how I detest it, unless I am particularly acquainted with my partner.” As someone who can recognize anxiety, this sounds like a defense mechanism. Darcy is not comfortable dancing, or even communicating, with the guests he doesn’t know. For Lizzy, she misunderstands and thinks Darcy is just really rude, but for someone with social anxiety, I understand where he is coming from because it does sound like the ninth circle of hell.

“I certainly have not the talent which some people possess,” said Darcy, “of conversing easily with those I have never seen before. I cannot catch their tone of conversation, or appear interested in their concerns, as I often see done.”

Later in the book, Darcy admits to Lizzy that he struggles to “converse easily” with people he doesn’t know yet. This is a massive moment of growth for Darcy—he’s letting his walls down and admitting to Lizzy that he struggles, and it shows how much Darcy trusts Lizzy already. For Darcy to verbalize that he struggles with this is a momentous thing: In this era, social anxiety wouldn’t have been discussed, and probably wasn’t very accepted. We see this in Lizzy’s dismissive tease about how he should just ‘practice’ more when it comes to speaking to strangers—today, we know more about anxiety and understand that it doesn’t really work like that, Elizabeth.

After this re-reading of Pride and Prejudice, I am seeing Mr. Darcy as someone who struggles with anxiety. While he is prideful in some ways, I cant help but think that maybe the reason he is so quiet and dismissive is actually due to an anxiety disorder, rather than cut-and-dry pridefulness..

DNF at 20%

This is so frustrating. I'm not really bored per se.
The narrator does a good job narrating. Mrs. Bennett's voice is done real shrilly and its like nails on a chalkboard.
I can suffer through that for the sake of this story. Pride and Prejudice has been on my TBR for years and I love the movie with Kiera Knightly and Matthew McFadden.

The main reason for this DNF is the malfunctioning of my NetGalley Shelf. The audio stops playing in between chapters, Sometimes in the middle of the chapters and I have to relaunch. I've just had enough.
