Wow, I raced through this, my favourite Alice Feeney book! So many twists and turns, it was hard to put down. I was intrigued by it to the very end.

Having read Rock, Paper, Scissors last year which I absolutely loved, I couldn't wait to read this and I wasn't disappointed.
Nana is turning eighty and she wants the whole family to return to Seaglass to celebrate. Nana was told by a palm reader that she wouldn't live beyond her birthday so she lets the family members know what she has left them in her will.
This was a dark, sinister whodunnit, a nod to Agatha Christie.
Nana is first to die and the poem on the chalk board in the kitchen is very clever, depicting each member and their chosen career paths.
I read this in rwo sittings as it really was hard to put down. As each chapter finished it was left on a cliffhanger that you just had to continue reading.
The ending. Well I was totally not expecting that and I don't think many will guess either.
Totally hooked from beginning to end this is definitely another winner.
Thanks to Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for the ARC in return for an honest review.

Daisy Darker is a dark, unsettling whodunnit with a very unexpected twist at the end that made my skin crawl and tingle in more than one occasion.

I loved the poem being crossed out little by little and the videotapes left as 'clues', although sometimes I failed to see their connection with the story, if not to give another piece of information about the family's dark past.

As in other Feeney's books, the chapters are short and end with a small cliffhanger or with a shocking revelation, making you want to read 'just one more chapter' over and over and before you know it you have finished the book... and I love that!

Unlike her other books though, this is a very slow burning story, with a lot of dialogs where the characters accuse each other and try to figure out what's going on. Apart from the killings, not very much happens. However, the psychological tension is high and the writing very good.

Definitely a book I recommend.

Thank you Netgallery and PanMacMillan for the arc if this book in exchange for an honest review.

OMG! This is an absolutely brilliant book, you really will never guess what’s going to happen. Beautiful sense of place too, you can picture the house, hear the roar of the sea and almost feel the sand beneath your feet. Wonderfully awful characters too, although you do come to care for them. This will be the most talked about and recommended book of the summer. I have loved all of Alice Feeney’s books, but this one is superlative.

I love Alice Feeney’s work and was very excited to read this. I was not disappointed, this was SUPERB!

Told in both past and present with short chapters - I found myself just wanting to read on and on - I was so blindsided I didn’t see what was happening in front of my eyes! I was trying to read slower towards the end while not wanting to read it because the story would be finished.

It’s been a long time since a book has taken hold of me like this one did!

Definitely recommend you read it!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Daisy Darker was born with a faulty valve in her heart. It was never expected that she would live a long life. By the age of 13 she had died about 5 or more times already and had endured countless surgeries. Her mother, Nancy didn’t seem to care for her, her parents divorced and her older sisters, Rose and Lily, didn’t pay much attention to her either. She was not allowed to go to school or do very much at all as it could be dangerous. Her home schooling consisted of her reading any books she get her hands on.

Her nana is the only person who truly loves her and she spends quite a lot of time at Seaglass - her nana’s rather unique home on a small tidal island in Cornwall. Later, her niece Trixie (Lily’s daughter) also develops a close relationship with Daisy. The story is told both in the past and present by Daisy.

The family gathers at Seaglass to celebrate nana’s 80th birthday at Halloween. She thinks it may her last as a fortune teller told her she would not live past 80, so she also uses this occasion to outline the disposition of her will. Ouch! Most of the family are quietly outraged. After midnight, with about 8 hours to go until the tide gets low enough to cross back to the mainland, and in an homage to Agatha Christie, people start dying. Nana is the first to go, in the kitchen and on the wall is chalked a rather unflattering poem about the Darker family. Each death is accompanied by a slight change to the poem and a video is left at the scene with scrabble tiles spelling out “watch me”, “hear me” and so on. These videos feature childhood memories of the sisters.Who is the killer? Is there someone else in the house? It seems like the only answer. But the ending, and the culprit, is quite a surprise.

Alice Feeney can write, there is no doubt about that. But I did have a huge issue with plausibility. My younger daughter had open heart surgery in her early 20s to replace a leaky valve. This surgery requires the sternum to be cracked open to allow access to the heart. It is then wired together again. My daughter had another surgery to remove the wire as it was causing pain. My point is how many times can you crack open and wire together somebody’s sternum? My other issue was - yes, indeed the Darker family were mostly not nice people, but is that reason enough to go on a killing spree? I can’t can’t actually see it. And finally - how were all these deaths or disappearances explained to the police/friends/workmates? Many thanks to Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

One more thing - I found the many pages of scribble between each of the short chapters extremely annoying.

Thanks to NetGalley and PanMcMillan for my copy of this for review. I loved everything about it! The very well named ‘Darker’ family with all their flaws and history, and especially the character of Daisy. The writing style was brilliant and the story unfolded slowly over the course of one night. Twists and turns all over the place kept me gripped from beginning to end!!

Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney
I give this book 5 stars

Daisy Darker’s family were as dark as dark can be, when one of them died, all of them lied and pretended not to see . . .

I devoured this and it’s in the running as one of my favourite thrillers of the year, it’s also now my top read by this author!
Extremely well written l absolutely loved this tense and palpable cat and mouse storyline. The Darker family are a dysfunctional mix who really came to life, along with the isolated and claustrophobic setting. This brilliant dark tale draws you in so deeply with all the twists, turns and clever drip fed flashbacks that it’s extremely difficult to put down.My favourite parts by far were the VHS tapes and poetic verses. I suspected everyone and trusted no one.
What are you waiting for….go buy your copy now!!
With thanks to Netgalley, Alice Feeney and Pan Macmillan for my chance to read and review this book

A fun read, even though I found the style of prose somewhat tedious, especially in the first third of the book. Things picked up once the family had gathered and the bodies started to pile. I wasn’t terribly convinced about the killer’s motive, but enjoyed the story overall. The twist was one I had half seen coming, but it was a good twist! What a horrible family, by the way!

Oh, my giddy aunt! This has shot straight up to current favourite in my book.

I loved it, the creeping suspense that was always sort of there, lurking just over your shoulder, the beautiful (and a little haunting, or perhaps haunted), SeaGlass (oh please, please, please let me find a home just like it!). Daisy herself, fragile and a little broken, like a beautifully crafted wooden toy that just won't wind up. Speaking of winding up - the clocks! What a clever idea...

And Nana. My SeaGlass must pretty-please, if it's not too much to ask, come with a Nana. What a marvellous woman she is, in every way. As sharp as a switchblade and fierce as a tiger. Her quirky ways will linger with me long after I have closed the last page, and hopefully, I shall be just as wonderful when I have a SeaGlass of my very own.

And that spectacular twist. I have to be honest, the ending caught me completely by surprise. There were one (or maybe two) red herrings that I considered, but then dismissed. So interesting, so, so much more than what you think, and completely different to everything else I have read lately. Loved it!

5 Bright sparkly stars for Alice Feeney's Daisy Darker.

I have to say that sadly this book did not deliver for me. I am a Alice Feeney fan and have now read three of her books. This one is my least favourite. Why? It just didn't give me the anticipation I craved of a twisty plot that builds and builds. Don't get me wrong, it was there in the book structure however somehow it just didn't have the desired impact as intended for its reader. It did not hit right, I was rather underwhelmed by it.

I don't know if it is the time of when I read the book that effected my feelings towards it with it being set in October on Halloween, I wonder if it's lost on me as we are currently enjoying such hot summer weather. It just fell short of delivering on being a brilliant page turning read for me.

Thank you to the publishers for my review copy in return for my honest review.

I am afraid that I just didn't connect with this book. My fault for requesting it, I found it hard to enjoy it.

Firstly I'd like to thank NetGalley for kindly letting me have an ARC and the Audiobook of Daisy Darker to review. As always, this is an honest review with my thoughts on the book.

Daisy Darker isn't my first book I've read by Alice Feeney. I thoroughly enjoyed Sometimes I Lie and I hoped that this book would have that same sinister edge that she captured so well before. If I was to liken Daisy Darker to any thing, its felt like watching one of the old Agatha Christie films (I'm sorry I'm a heathen and have not read any of her work). Could you ever trust the narrator, the side characters, what you were being shown Or told? That's how Daisy Darker felt to me, there was always that edge to it.

I listened and read through Daisy Darker during my Summer morning walks and in the afternoons while home enjoying a coffee. I'm not normally the biggest audio book fan and have always prefered to read over listen, but the narrator was the perfect voice for Daisy and made me feel like she was talking to me as a friend. Revealing the darkest secrets and traits of her family (And her innermost thoughts too). Swapping from listening to then reading often meant I kept that voice in my head. I will say I would definitely listen to more works from Alice (Author) on audio after this.

Daisy was actually a likeable character, I loved her care free feel. The clothing she chose to adopt, her thoughts on her family (Especially her niece) and especially her Nanna. I also loved that Nana predicted she would die around her 80th year and her eccentricity. She had elements to her of my own Nanna and its made me love her more! With a family that holds so many secrets and darker thoughts it was truly interesting to read as the book progressed told hour by hour in the present and delving into the childhood of Daisy too. Being cut off from everyone on an island it made the book have that sinister feel which I was hoping for and kept me reading and listening with intrigue. I cannot give you any spoilers on this book, it is best to go in with an open mind. But will say it's the perfect thriller and one many I feel many will enjoy as a Summer read (Or listen).

Thoroughly enjoyable, I will be looking at other books from Alice (Author) in the future and recommend Daisy Darker to my fellow readers if you enjoy a good thriller with a beautiful island setting cut off from everything and a truly unique family. A solid 4 stars.

This is my favourite book by Alice Feeney and definitely the best book I've read this year.

There is so much to love about this book! The well written characters, plot, the atmospheric location which all result in a page turning thriller I want to read again. Immediately!

I don't want to give anything away but I highly recommend this book to everyone and will be bugging my friends to read it.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for the advanced e-copy.

The Darker family haven’t been in the same room for over a decade. Not since the night it all happened….but Nana is now turning 80 and has summoned her entire family to her house on a remote island of the Cornish coast. When the tide comes in, they trapped together to face up to the past and survive the night, if they can.

When I finished this book, I immediately picked up my phone to message the friend who was buddy reading with me and typed out “This book is EVERYTHING “ because it is! It’s outstanding and certainly Alice Feeney’s best book yet. Alice Feeney is queen of “I didn’t see that coming” so I was expecting anything and everything but she still got me with her intricately weaved meticulous plot. This book is SO clever. The characters vivid and nuanced and it’s a deliciously claustrophobic read. I’ve never enjoyed myself more whilst feeling tense and creeped out. The description of the setting is wonderful too. I want Nana and Seaglass to be real so she can adopt me and I can live there.

It’s an amazing book that I want to thrust into the hands of everyone I know so that we can discuss it.

Thank you to Alice Feeney, Macmillan and Netgalley for the opportunity to review an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks net galley for this wonderful book, could not put it down and never guessed who did it.
Daisy was born with a broken heart and died many times.
Her mother her siblings and her father never loved her but her nana did and she told Daisy many times she was her favourite.
The whole family were invited to visit nana to her house Seaglass one more time to celebrate her birthday and her death.
The description of the house, the clocks and the waves outside was amazing and you could actually visualise yourself being there.
Was there a murderer in the house, someone wanted them all dead who was it, you will have to read this superb book to find out.
Never guessed the end and could not put it down.

There was just something about Daisy Darker that made me want to read it instantly. This probably had a lot to do with the isolated setting and the promise of a locked room vibe... Both elements tend to increase my enjoyment of any story drastically. I confess that I've had mixed reactions to her books in the past, but I was hoping to have a repeat experience of the brilliant His & Hers with this newest title. I'm happy to say that I ended up having a fantastic time with Daisy Darker, and it's without doubt one of my reading highlights so far this year!

I'm a sucker for a good locked room mystery, and this story basically pays homage to the classic And Then There Were None. The isolated Cornish private island setting is the perfect backdrop for this story, and the stormy weather only adds to that ominous vibe. On top of this, the present timeline takes place on Halloween, giving the story even more atmosphere; I liked how it wasn't just a date mentioned, but the Halloween festivities actually played a part in the plot. The same goes for the setting and the Seaglass house itself, which is where the story mainly takes place.

The plot is divided into two parts: the present (2004) storyline where we follow the events as they unfold during the night of Nana's eightieth birthday, and flashbacks to different years in the past at Seaglass. The flashbacks give us more information about the past of the Darker family and they help showing us what they are really like as well... Most of the family isn't exactly likeable (except for Daisy, Nana and Trixie), but their characters are well developed and fitted the story perfectly. It was intriguing to slowly learn more about their dynamics, and the fact that they are not exactly likeable makes reading about their possible demise all the more entertaining.

There was just something about the writing style that hit the mark perfectly, and combined with the pace, suspense and eerie atmosphere I literally couldn't stop reading. There are a lot of secrets involved and the plot twists themselves were mostly very successful. Not all the twists have the same impact, but there was one giant plot twist bomb I never saw coming that turned the story completely on its head. It's part of the reason why Daisy Darker was so successful for me! I literally couldn't stop reading once I discovered certain things, and I ended up finishing this story in (almost) one sitting.

All in all Daisy Darker turned out to be an atmospheric and simply brilliant thriller with a locked room vibe and a major twist that packs a punch. I already know it will appear on my list of 2022 favorites!

I have enjoyed Alice Feeney's previous books but Daisy Darker not so much. While starting off as a psychological family drama it then drifts unexpectedly into the supernatural and it lost me then.

Told from Daisy's point of view the story takes place at Seaglass her Nana's house on a Cornish bay which gets cut off from the mainland at high tide. It is the old lady's 80th birthday and she has been told by a fortune teller that she will die on that day. All the family is gathered to celebrate with her and one by one, a la Agatha Christie, they all die.

I found the sudden change of genre and ending contrived and unbelievable. IMO Daisy Darker doesn't match up to other books by Alice Feeney but nonetheless an enjoyable read. Thanks to NetGalley and Pan MacMillan for the opportunity to read and review this book.
