The art was good. That's all, that's the review. Literally nothing else was good in this book.

Extremely detailed illustrations and a wonderfully strong protagonist. I liked the way Vesper was never successfully controlled by anyone to make a certain choice, although they did try. Vesper gave me a bit of medusa vibes in that everyone wants to kill her because of the power she is able to have over the population.
One point of criticism is that I wish this first instalment was longer and we got to see more of Vesper’s backstory.

I am always on the look out for new fantasy graphic novels that aren’t superhero based so this caught my eye!

As with all fantasy graphic novels, it can be hard to connect to the world building done normally through text. There was a lot of “new fantasy world” lingo that isn’t fully explained just because there is no room to be explaining pages worth of minor world building. But I never felt super confused, more just intrigued by what’s to come. But overall, I did feel a bit disconnected and disjointed. I think this will be smoothed out in later volumes.

Action wise, you’re dropped straight in and I think that’s a great way to hook people in. The action reads nicely in the illustrations and flows well. I really enjoy this format for fantasy because imagining fantasy battles in novels is super hard for me so I love seeing in right on the page.

I am on the fence about the characters right now in that I am a bit curious as to how a certain event will factor into the story from there out. With the introduction to the new world and the constantly action, we don’t get much time with our characters or get a chance to be in their head.

I recommend this for fantasy lovers looking to branch out into graphic novels!

A fast-paced, gory, Star Wars-esque comic set in a medieval fantasy world.

Vesper starts with the battle that finally puts an end to the years-long war between the Soraji people and the Sylvaestris. Vesper, an Ekklesian knight and half chimera, is the one responsible for this greatest feat, along with the Ekklesian Prince, Crimson, who is actually her lover. The main conflict in the story kicks in when they are rewarded with an arrest warrant and a government plot to get rid of both of them.

From the start I realy liked the premise for this book, but I really doubted if I was going to like it, since comics aren't usually my thing. However, I soon I found myself sorrounded by beautiful, well constructed characters, whose desire for a better and more equal world gripped me into the story right away.

Although I usually find it hard to get myself immersed into graphic novels, I didn't have that problem with this book. Even if the comic is quite short, only 63 pages, we are given a good sense of the world politics and social dynamics, and we also get good insight into who the characters are, what motivates them and a bit of the past that got them where they are today.

Overall, I really enjoyed Vesper, and I think it's a very accessible book for people who, like me, don't read that many comics. I liked the way the story devolved, as well as the characters and the beautiful art. And I was astounded by that ending! I will definitely read the next, and I hope more people will, too.

Vesper was an interesting story with a lot going on in just a few pages. Action-packed and fast paced, along with this type of artwork, this graphic novel felt more like a video game.

I found the fantasy world intriguing and captivating, but I felt a bit lost at times and the story ended up being too violent for my taste.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Content Warning: torture, rape, violence

*3.5 stars overall

Vesper drops your right into the action in this first volume. It's hard to understand all the territories and countries in this novel as you only get a quick explanation at the beginning but with no background in between the battle scenes. However, after this initial portion, which is really meant to serve as a prologue for the rest of the tale, the story takes off towards a really dark and interesting plot line. I definitely enjoyed it after that, and it was easier to follow along as well.
You get a little bit of a backstory of the characters, which I assume will develop further in subsequent versions of the story - so far, the characters themselves and the bias towards certain races is really intriguing. The atmosphere is well done through the story, it is colorful but also dark, grim and gory when it needs to be. The art is not my favorites or preference for such a comic, it feels a little blurry of a style and I would've preferred an art style that is a little sharper. The plot is ever so slightly confusing, as I'm not sure if we will focus on the war again or if the plot is going to focus majorly on Vesper and Crimson. At first, we are thrown into a war and the world as a whole, and it reads as though we have a lot going on and that we don't know enough about the world to jump into action and politics this extensive. Moving along in the story, the plot then focuses more on the character arcs, which was a nice change of pace and a part of the story I could understand a little easier.
The author did manage to get me hooked though and I would continue on with this series if I get the chance!

I love a good, original fantasy story and Vesper Vol 1 – The Amazon by Jérémy isn’t your typical fantasy comic. While it doesn’t break too much ground with the story itself, the overall presentation in this comic is where it stands out. Creatures are amazing and imaginative – I was almost reminded of films like The Dark Crystal when seeing all manner of fantastic beasts from page to page. The artwork itself is absolutely gorgeous, almost having a style somewhere in-between the likes of Yoshitaka Amano and Boris Vallejo. I was mostly excited to see his use of color as opposed to the typical modern fantasy story all told in various shades of brown and gray.

“Vesper, the Amazon of the Knights of Nyx, is a formidable warrior versed in the practice of Etheric magic. She uses her talents in the service of Prince Crimson Nyx, with whom she shares the dream of a kingdom where people of all races can live together. But in the midst of celebrating an important victory for their kingdom, the two heroes are ambushed by the Ekklesia, a religious order that sees in them the manifestation of dark forces that must be stamped out… A fast-paced first entry of a thrilling fantasy series not to be missed.”

If you are a fan of Game of Thrones or The Witcher, I’d say you’d be at home here, as Vesper seems to be somewhat inspired by both although settling on much more of a “high fantasy” setting than either. It’s honestly the best of both worlds, as you get all of the fantastic scenery and crazy creatures of a lighter fantasy setting with all the court intrigue and back-stabbing of the modern fantasy taste in 2022. Vesper is a strong female protagonist in the same cloth as someone like Red Sonja, although she doesn’t merely exist as a sexual object like large broad swath of such characters tend to be. If anything her lover Prince Crimson Nyx is more vulnerable and gratuitously posed than she.

Fair warning, this book is NOT for the kiddos. It contains depictions of murder, torture, attempted rape, and is quite gory at times. That said, none of this is very gratuitous, but I wanted to extend a bit of cation. If you aren’t bothered by that, it’s just enough “adult” to stay exciting and unpredictable without turning into something more sinister.

This book ends on a COLOSSAL cliffhanger, so I really can’t wait for it to continue on at some point. It will be interesting to see how Vesper fares against an entire conspiracy to use her as a pawn for a nasty landgrab, and whether the reason for her fighting is even still alive by the time she gets there. Europe Comics has chosen a number of great fantasy comics this past year, with The Lost Ages and Thorgal coming to mind. With my love of the European comic style, they are easily one of the best digital publishers out there!

This was my first time reading a graphic novel. I honestly chose this Netgalley because of the cover art, and to branch out and try a new genre. And I was not disappointed in the slightest. The artwork on the pages was done very well, I loved all the attention to detail in them. For being very new to the world of graphic novels I thought this one was easy to read. The world building in the beginning was slow paced but nice because it gives you time to get into the world and understand what's going on. Once the story picked up it kept going at a good pace, and I enjoyed it. It did seem short, only 58 pages, but I don't know if that's normal for graphic novels. The ending was great! Can't wait for book 2 to come out!!

Trigger warnings: violence, rape, witchcraft

I read this comic thank to Netgalley and i found myself immediately launched in the reading of what i didn't know was a french comic! I missed so much reading comics from France and Belgium.
There is something in the style of those artist that really makes me happy.
And this author it's really talented for the drawing! The battles and movement scenes in general are surely his best feature.
The story try to make us understand a little of the region and politics that build the story backgrounds, but it doesn't do that very well because most of the balloons with descriptions and spoken words are really filled to the brim with words, making them a little boring to read.
Apart from that i'm really curious to know what happen next because when i got to the end, i was a little lost...i wanted to know more!
I'm sure this first number was more like a prologue for the real action and main part of the story, so it really catched me with the two main protagonist!
Hope to see more soon!

4 stars - It was really good

Wow! I was not expecting that ending! What a cliffhanger!

This was a fascinating graphic novel with a kickass female heroine. Vesper is a half-human, half-Chimera with the Knights of Nyx, who are led by Prince Crimson Nyx. Crimson and Vesper have a dream of a kingdom that accepts everyone and is at peace. Unfortunately, things don’t go as they planned and they find themselves in danger.

While very action packed and emotion, this graphic novel did start off a little slow. There was a lot of information about the world, characters, and the war at first which was a little confusing at first. Vesper was an awesome heroine and I really wish this was longer because I need to know more about her now.

Overall, this was a fascinating and gritty graphic novel and I want more. Also, I really enjoyed the artwork.

Trigger Warnings: slavery, abuse, torture, threats of rape, graphic violence

Vesper by Jeremy is an adult fantasy graphic novel that is perfect for fans of Game of Thrones and the Witcher. The story revolves around Vesper, a female warrior with magic powers. According to the description, Vesper "uses her talents in the service of Prince Crimson Nyx, with whom she shares the dream of a kingdom where people of all races can live together." But there are powerful enemies in the kingdom. Will their dream of peace be just a dream?

Overall, Vesper is a thrilling fantasy graphic novel with plenty of action, violence, and romance. One highlight of this book is the gorgeous artwork. It reminded me of Eric Shanower at times and also of the Fever Moon graphic novel. I really enjoyed this graphic novel because of the well-drawn characters, whether human or creature. If you're intrigued by the description, or if you're into graphic novels, I took off 1 star, because a few scenes contained gore or sex. I highly recommend that you check out this book, which is available now!

After the peoples of Thingummajig invaded the kingdom of Dooflidonk, they captured the capital, Whatsizname, but then got stuck there, besieged. The only person able to break the defence is our title character, a magician, Amazonian warrior – and someone not fully human. Which will be something her employers suddenly find most distasteful indeed, in this over-egged fantasy hack 'n' slash. Yes, this is one of those instances where you complain of too much world-building – the victory means this to this faction, that to that one, and when Vesper gets x done to her by y it affects z, and there's never enough lightness in the touch when it comes to telling us any of this. It's not unreadably bad, but not the approach that I wanted. Visually, the story-telling is fine, if you can forgive a few weird wispy bits here and there, and some blunt changes in palette. But what it all boils down to is that this is very much a fantasy book of the old school, with people forced to have any side in any matter to drive the (at times really quite gory) sword 'n' sorcery action along. It is fine if you like that kind of thing, but almost too old-fashioned for the mainstream taste.
