17 stories by 17 different authors, some of which are regular go-tos or even favorites I trust blindly. And 2 of them actually delivered the „strongest“ stories here. Still … 2 out of 17 is NOT a good track record.

Great collection, I love time travel and this had some fantastic stories!

I love a queer anthology collection and I love that this one created sci-fi stories and time-traveling stories with queer-normative characters. It's becoming more prevalent to see queer characters in sci-fi and fantasy-adjacent novels and I love the entire collection and authors who contributed to this anthology!

This collection of short stories combines time travel and romance in sixteen very different but similarly unique takes on "time-crossed romance", and in thus combining two of my most favourite genres it was exactly my cup of tea. Needless to say there were some stories I enjoyed more than others, but there was not a single one I didn't like, so I think it is fair to say that this is an exceptional good example of a successful anthology. I enjoyed the many different kinds of romances and time-traveling scenarios depicted here and loved how the general tenor of all of these stories creates a very wholesome atmosphere - even though not all the stories necessarily have happy endings. Another thing I loved about these stories was the diversity of the romances depicted and the ample LGBT representation in them.

As with all short story collections, some of these stories are a hit and a miss — but that just means there’s something here for everyone! I really admired the range of stories and writers.

SHort story collections, in my experiences, are a mixed bag of stories where some stand out and some pass sort of unnoticeable.
I am happy to say that this collection broke this pattern in my eyes! Most of the stories ranked at least a 4 out of 5 star ranking. So much queerness, so much love, some much wimey wibly wobley time storylines! LOVED IT!!!!!

I got a little delayed in my regular schedule as I sat to put together this review. As I have mentioned earlier, I am trying to stick to reviewing individual stories of collections in order to provide myself with a way to look back appropriately on my reactions to the book.

Roadside Attraction by Alix E.Harrow- 3 stars
This was a simple story to start a collection of. The writing was good, and the story was straightforward. A man trying to get over emotional rejection keeps wanting to go somewhere else in time to find his happiness, all the while missing something quite obvious.

The Past Life Reconstruction Service by Zen Cho – 3 stars
This was a slightly more concept to internalize. We have an older man who has split from his much younger partner. He wants to go back into his past lives to find more meaning in his life but keeps meeting the same situation everywhere.

First Aid by Seanan McGuire 2 Stars
I have not read any of the author’s more complete works. The time traveller here is sent on a fact-finding mission. She ends up in a different time than she expects and ends up wanting to stay.

I remember Satellites by Sarah Gailey- 3 stars
A woman is sent on a mission to ensure certain things in history occur the way they are supposed to. It is a one-way mission, and she ends up making some decisions for personal reasons.

The Golden Hour by Jeffrey Ford 4 stars
A time traveller is living out of sync and is believed by very few. There is romance involved and the friend is trying to orchestrate some happiness in the other’s life. The writing and the length felt more full than some of the previous tales.

The Lichens by Nina Allan 3 stars
A teacher in Scotland finds herself out of sync with her time and place. On one random day, she meets a woman who gives her information that can be used to help each other.

Kronia by Elizabeth Hand – 3 stars
This is a series of what-ifs. I am not usually a fan of the style of narration, but given the length of the chapter, it worked well.

Bergamot and Vetiver by Lavanya Lakshminarayan – 3 stars
The future is bleak, and seeking answers in the past, a time traveller goes to a more successful civilization to learn its secrets. I actually appreciated the end notes that the author provided that was about the actual older civilizations, based on physical evidence gathered.

The Difference Between Love and Time by Catherynne M.Valente – 2 stars
A relationship over various stages between a person and Time itself. Conceptually I should have liked it better, but here I did not get it.

Unbashed, or: Jackson Whose Cowardice Tore a Hole in the Chronoverse by Sam J. Miller – 3 stars
This is about a man who is reliving time in order to just relive the moments. Not a very complicated plot, but reflective.

Romance: Historical by Rowan Coleman – 4 stars
A time slip story of a woman in a bookshop. I have read one or two timeslip stories that attract me, and this was definitely one of them. It was simple and managed to work in the short length of the chapter.

The Place of All the Souls by Margo Lanagan – 3 stars
Time travellers who gather information live longer with body modifiers. There is a missed connection years ago that is discussed in the current time line. I liked the way the conversation was handled.

Timed Obsolescence by Sameem Siddiqui -2 stars
Man who travels through time and space develops an obsession with someone in another time. This leads him to make some bad decisions. Although I liked the writing and the narrative style, I was not as fond of the content.

A Letter to Merlin by Theodora Goss – 3 stars
The letter is the entire chapter. It is a revelation of the undercurrents at play where Merlin is involved. It was interesting to try and figure out if the central character was a positive or a negative character.

Dead Poets by Carrie Vaughn – 2 stars
A woman uses information she possessed to find a poet she has idolized. She instead finds her own skills by the end of it. The writing was well done, but the story was not as interesting to me.

Time Gypsy by Ellen Klages-4 stars
This was a satisfying way to end the collection. An academic is almost blackmailed into going back in time to figure out missing information which a missing scientist took to her grave with her. Things are definitely not as they seem when she does get into the past.

Although it took me a while to get through the collection and even longer to write up the review, I am glad I read this book. It was a deviation from my usual content and that in itself was refreshing. All the authors in this collection were quite skilled writers. I liked some content more than others (as is obvious from my retailed review)

I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

This one is going in my personal collection. I'm a time-travel junkie and this book did not disappoint. So many poignant stories about discovery, not just of other times/people/places, but of self. That was my favorite part. A beautiful read.

Anthology + time travel + some of my favourite authors!!! Sign me up!! I mean sure, it looks like there might be a lot of lovey dovely piffle in there, but I can overlook that small minor aspect.

At least that was what I thought when I laid my grubby little hands on this tome. Thankfully my trusty reliable author-squad did not let me down. Sure some of the stories in there are sweet and enduring but thankfully a definite lack of overly sentimental gushing lovestruck hearts, pinwheel eyes and happily ever afters. Overall some terrific stories plus a few new authors I've now added to my TBR pile. Am definitely becoming a fan of Jonathan Strahan's collections.

Recommended for fans of Seanan McGuire, Catherynne M. Valente, Zen Cho, Theodora Goss, Carrie Vaughn, This is How You Lose the Time War, The Chronicles of St Marys, Here and Now and Then, A Thousand Pieces of You, The Immortals, You Cannot Mess This Up, Space Hopper, Tuned Out, Time After Time, Replay,

Thank you to Netgalley and Rebellion Publishing for the ARC.

Overall, I enjoyed this anthology, but some of the stories fell a bit short of my expectations. While most of the stories were well-written and engaging, others felt like they were a little behind in terms of quality and substance.

3.5-4/5 star

"Someone in Time" is a science fiction and fantasy anthology that brings together a diverse group of authors to explore themes of romance and time travel. As a reader with a particular love for time travel stories, I was drawn to this collection and was pleased to find that it featured a number of queer and diverse characters.

Overall, the quality of the stories in this anthology was mixed. Some of them were very well-written and engaging, with complex and well-developed characters and engaging plots that kept me turning the pages. However, others did not quite live up to my expectations. In particular, I found that some of the stories seemed to awkwardly incorporate elements of romance, as if they were tacked on at the last minute rather than being an integral part of the story.

Despite this, I did find the collection as a whole to be enjoyable, even if it did not reach the heights of excellence that I had hoped for.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I definitely took my time reading this anthology. Each story was such a gem and gave a new twist to time travel romance. Catherynne M. Valente's story was definitely my favorite of all of them.

Thank you to Nina Allan; Zen Cho; Rowan Coleman; Jeffrey Ford; Sarah Gailey; Theodora Goss; Elizabeth Hand; Alix E. Harrow; Ellen Klages; Lavanya Lakshminarayan; Margo Lanagan; Seanan McGuire; Sam J. Miller; Catherynne M. Valente; Carrie Vaughn; Sameem Siddiqui, Rebellion, Solaris, and Netgalley for this advanced reader copy (ARC) of "Someone in Time: Tales of Time-Crossed Romance" for an honest review.

I was starry-eyed just looking at the names listed in here, so many who are massive story gods in my following realm. I love the bent of all these stories told across time. Five star stories, unsurprisingly/delightedly from Jeffrey Ford; Sarah Gailey; Elizabeth Hand; Alix E. Harrow; and Catherynne M. Valente.

Sadly, there were some stories in here that I felt fell flat on their faces, so my grade is a little mixed on this one. I'm going to put 3 stars, as I feel like I can't round my honest grade of about a 3.5 up to a 4 for this one.

I wanted to love this. I love time travel. I love short stories. I’m getting more into romance. There are some amazing authors in this anthology (Cat Valente, Alix E. Harrow, Zen Cho and Seanan McGuire are among my favorites.)

But while a couple of these stories were five stars, some of them fell almost completely flat for me, and I found myself skimming a couple—something that has never happened to me with a short story collection before. I was just bored, and I don’t see how something so short can be boring.

I did think that all the different ways the authors explored how one could time travel was great, and some of the time travel mechanisms were totally brilliant.

I received this book from Rebellion Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Loved these quick and simple stories. Actually loved it enough that I tried to savor each one like a piece of candy and kept putting off reading it between stories to savor them for longer and lost track of time.
