"Wake" unfolds as a character-driven narrative set within a captivating atmosphere, brimming with intriguing hooks. Mina, grappling with the loss of her twin, navigates alongside her resentful friend Alanna, who shares a similar experience but lacks Mina's fervent determination. With an internet following amplifying the search and the allure of a million-dollar reward, the plot unfolds with enticing complexity.

Overall, "Wake" is a well-crafted and ultimately fulfilling slow-burn read.

Wake is a character-driven tale in an atmospheric setting, with a plethora of catchy hooks. Mina has lost her twin, her resentful friend Alanna, also lost a sibling but without the intense interest, and an internet following driving the discovery of what happened with the added incentive of a million dollar reward.

A well-written and ultimately satisfying slow-burn.

Thank you for the opportunity to review this book. Unfortunately since requesting the book, my reading tastes have changed and it would be unfair to review this book as I do not think I could give it the review that would be justified

Read this in two goes. I absolutely love a missing person story. This is the first in a series of PI books. I loved how this built from a slow burn to unputdownable. Can’t wait to read the second one now!

This book was okay but felt a bit slow to me. Great setting and characters just not as engaging as I was expecting.

This book ticks all my boxes, am really going through an Australian phase right now. I liked the timelines and how they told the story, lots of different people could have done it - right up my alley.

I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.

Mina's nine year old twin sister Evelyn disappeared nineteen years ago, from their remote farm and it's still a hot topic on social media and crime chat rooms.

Mia has become a recluse, living on her own, rarely venturing out except for food shopping and to see her librarian friend.

Private investigator Lone Holland who has had success in solving other cold cases wants to interview Mia, but he has his own dark secrets. Is he there for the reward or does he have an ulterior motive!!

This is simply brilliant. I loved that it was set in Australia on a remote farming community where you can imagine everyone knowing everyone's business.

I'm looking forward to the next book written by this great author.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

Well written austrailian mystery. I really enjoyed it! Twists and turns and a startling conclusion. This would make a good drama for TV!

I was hooked on this story straight away, however, I felt it jumped back and forward too much. I appreciate that this is an intricate part of the story but I couldn't keep up some of the time. I did enjoy the thrill of not knowing what would happen within either of the three stories. I liked Mina but wasn't so sure about the other characters. The end was ok, predictable, but still enjoyable.

Thanks to Netgalley for this opportunity to read this book in exchange of a fair and honest review.

Lane is a private investigator trying to solve unsolved crimes. When he tries to find out what happened to Evelyn almost 20 years ago it becomes clear he has got a personal link to the case. A slow moving story but better towards the end.

This book revolves around two women that disappeared 20 years ago. Their sisters are still looking for them, and now they have the help of an investigator. Nothing is as it seems, but all is revealed in the end.

This was quite a complex, slow burner, dealing with childhood trauma. It took me a while to get into it, but I´m glad I did.

Taking place in the Outback of Australia, you get to understand the bleakness and remoteness of how it can be. Two people drawn together by events which took place in the past, unravelling the mystery, piece by piece, and ultimately, putting their lives in danger to reveal the truth.

My thanks to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for giving me the opportunity to read an advanced copy in return for an honest opinion.

An atmospheric crime mystery set in the Australian outback. The story was interesting but the characters lacked emotion and I found it quite a depressing and difficult read. However, I will read more from this talented author.

"It's easy to believe that if you just change one thing then you would have lived a perfect life with no pain or loss."

#Wake by #ShelleyBurr is a welcome addition to #AustralianCrimeFiction. There was a sense of realness to the story and the characters were convincing and fully formed. Throughout the book I could visualise the small, nearly abandoned country town, feel the frustration but unavoidable need to drive three hours to reach 'civilisation', and recognised the consideration needed to go walking on a remote property.

I felt the conclusion was inevitable and ever so slightly rushed. At the same time, once the resolution was made, there was no reason to drag it out. I will be watching to see what Burr produces next.

Thanks to @hodderbooks & @netgalley for the free e-ARC in return for an unbiased review.

A great read that I enjoyed reading and kept me interested the whole way through. I look forward to reading more by this author.

A beautifully written debut that meshes true crime obsession with Outback Noir and is its own vivid and atmospheric story despite the growing prevalence of both. New investigations of a 19-year-old cold case of a vanished child upturn the lives of family and the small farming community. Tense and emotional.

One of my very top reads of 2022, included in my 'best of the year' lists for a New Zealand magazine and a US magazine.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for approving me for this book.

I felt the writing was done well in this book but there was just something missing for me and I couldn't get into it and enjoy it as much as I hoped I would.

Wake is a hugely atmospheric and haunting debut that I really enjoyed.
Mina's sister Evelyn disappeared 19 years ago. Mina now lives as a recluse on her family's old sheep farm and when she's approached by Lane, a Private Investigator, who wants to reinvestigate the case she is initially sceptical of his motives.
This was a slow burn thriller with some good twists and an underlying tension running throughout. The author excels with her portrayal of Mina; her trauma and sense of loss. The sense of place comes through strongly and I really felt that I was there in the Australian outback. Recommended.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.

I very quickly became gripped by this story. With three different stories to follow. You have Mina and her missing sister, Alanna and her missing sister and then Lane, his sister and father.
I was intrigued to figure out how they were connected. I do feel this turned out to be pretty obvious but I still enjoyed and was intrigued to see how the rest of the story would unravel.
I like that the ending is somewhat wrapped up but also left a little open, with a question or two left unanswered.
I will definitely check out any future books by Shelley Burr.

Wake is a phenomenally atmospheric and unpredictable thriller from start to finish. Readers who enjoyed Jane Harper's The Dry will want to get their hands on this one. Filled to the brim with twists and a captivating plot, this one is sure to keep readers hooked. The characters are well-developed. The story is incredibly fast-paced. This is one not to be missed! Highly recommended! Be sure to check out Wake today.
