Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with and ARC of this book in return for my honest opinion.

Overall score: 1.5
Plot: 1
Characters: 2
Writing: 1

Just as stated in this book’s description, appearances can be deceiving. Unfortunately the premise, book cover, and the title did not live up to my expectations for this book.

This book reads like a Wattpad book. It has a TON of cliches and the writing is not my favorite. I like simple sentences but unfortunately this book was too simple in sentence structure and then all over the place in regards to plot. It was too colloquial and spoke to the reader too much. The plot had a ton of cliches but all of them were very shallow. The author could have gotten rid of a couple and it would not have affected the main story.

I did not like the main characters because they felt like teenagers the entire time even after the 15 yer age gap. There was almost no character growth or development, just drama for drama sake. The main character is supposed to be unique but she reads like a lot of other main characters.

As other have stated, this book does too much telling and not enough showing. It says that characters are best friends but then they never hang out or talk or have any unique connection.

Although I appreciated how some characters were on the autistic spectrum, it handled the discussion of drag queens in a very very weird way. It was almost an insult intended to diminish an already annoying character.

I have friends who like Wattpad and sometimes I am fine with that style but I did not like this book. I would not recommend this book to others.

It might be a worthwhile read to some, but I did not enjoy it.

I really loved this one! I read it after the Pub date, but I will be posting a review soon to recommend it to my fellow book lovers. Allison Jones is now on my Author "must-read" list!

2 STARS

the story revolves around main characters nina and harrison. they went to high school together but because of some conflict, they fell out. 15 years later, they reunite for their best friends' wedding and more drama ensues.

i've seen a few reviewers say that they weren't a big fan of the short chapters per pov and i cant help but agree. the short chapters break the story progression and i didnt like how everything was so surface level, in the sense that there was 0 development for the characters. i wasnt able to get to know the characters' personality which explains the zero attachment i have for them i guess.
im pretty irked by the conversations and the spoken exchanges between the characters just because they feel super fake. harrison and jameson have super awkward bro conversations i cringed inwardly (especially in the beginning parts)
the plot had so little development but so much potential. everything just flowed quickly and we just touch and go,, and im not a big fan of that. the level of drama was over the top and random, like the drag queen part was just a bit ???!?! i guess it was there for the humour but it didnt do it for me.

thank you to netgalley, allison jones for the arc

My Turn gave me high expectations because I love illustrated covers. I am very much a cover girl. However, it fell flat. I really liked the romance between Nina and Harrison. It was a very good second chance romance and Allison Jones has a very good writing voice. However, it was really chaotic and as a result, was kind of hard to follow at times. There was a lot going on with the plot and the characters.

What can I say, I love me a romance with some DRAMA. And boy dose this book not disappoint. I loved the build up between the main character and the guy she is in love with. The other did a good job of adding all the twists and turns to keep you interested. Definitely recommending this to my Romance book loving friends.

It's my first book from Allison Jones, and I find this book worth the read! The downside for me is that I had an impression that the book was more for teenagers because of how it started. But after going into the book a bit more, I find it interesting. The plot twist is unexpected. The book is easy to read, but I just could not connect with the characters

I was intrigued by the cove and the description of the book. It had a great start, but I just couldn’t connect with the characters unfortunately. Thank you so much for the arc!

cute cover and second chance romance is a great trope but it was so disappointing.. the main characters were both so dislikable and the chemistry was close to inexistant

Wasn't able to read - was granted access but not content was deliverable or downloadable. Not sure what happened or why.

This was an intriguing story that contained past secrets, concealed love and deception so interwoven into the fabric of the families , you would be hard pressed to discern who was trustworthy. Nina, the heroine, has been nurturing a past hurt for more than a decade and has fashioned her lifestyle accordingly, vowing to never be vulnerable again. Aiming to be strong and never be used by anyone, she reflects regretfully on a time when she succumbed to her humanity, an action that had long-reaching dire consequences. The story goes on to show how ,with the help and intervention of her friends and the concern of Harrison, she was able to evolve and rethink her stance on opening up her heart and embracing all that life had to offer, seizing her turn. This story was so good ,I read it twice. My thoughts on this book were my own and I appreciate the opportunity and access Netgalley provided for this review.

Whoa! What a ride. It was very fast-paced. The writing style kept me hooked and I didn't find myself losing any interest. I enjoyed getting to know each of the characters and how real the story felt. The author did a great job painting the setting, so it was easy for me to visualize the scene played out before me. I recommend giving this one a chance!

The only good thing I have to say about this book is that the chapters are really short so it's a pretty quick experience but I did no find it a very enjoyable one. I do believe there is potential for a good book in there somewhere but almost every aspect of this book needs work- the writing, the character development, the plot construction- even the chapter headers could. use improvement.. I love a rom-com- but this was just not romantic or comedic and I was not having fun.
I understand that its difficult sometimes to get what you want to say in a "show don't tell" fashion, but this book really made a question if the author was even trying. Furthermore, this book had me questioning the editing process it underwent. I should not be having the thought "she's not like other girls" be crossing through my mind with a roll of my eyes and then have the character narrating say almost the exact same thing, in an earnest way, 5 seconds later. Show me that a charter is sassy through their actions and dialogue. Please a character literally think "she is sassy". to convey this to me.
Additionally, the plot was kind of a mess and just full of bizarre (and not in a fun way) plot points. The thought "This is just not the way people act or function" crossed my mind so many times I lost count.

My Turn

by Allison Jones

Pub Date: 04 Mar 2022

The premise for this sounded cute, but the execution just didn't match up. The characters seemed really juvenile, especially for people who were supposedly professional adults. The different characters point of view simply restated the same words. And the situations of the story were simply over the top. I could not become invested in the main couple because their "love" was not believable. Sorry to say this book didn't work for me.

Unfortunately this was a DNF for me. Between the short chapter, POV changes, time changes, and simplistic writing I just could not stick with it. The characters felt underdeveloped and there was simply too much going on at once with them. It had potential, however it just wasn’t well executed.

I am always interest in a second chance romance and this was another one that I fell in love with. I also love the covert art, this would be an instant buy if I saw it on a shelf in my local indie. I really enjoyed how Jones was able to create such funny and relatable characters with a romance that felt genuine.

I was reading other reviews before I read this. And some of them were saying how it wasn’t realistic and just too much going on. But honestly, that is what pulled me in. I could not put it down. There were so many twists and turns. It was almost like a soap opera. It’s attention grabbing. I’m grateful for the chance to read this. And I think others should give it a chance as well.
