I’m a huge fan of this author and am making my way through all of their books. I really like this authors writing style and the romances in their books. I really like all the thrilling and mysterious aspects of these books. I can’t wait to continue to read more by this author.

I was bored and confused at the same time. There's so much going on, yet somehow it was too slow.

This psychological thriller is well written and an addictive read - mostly because I didn't want to stop, until I knew exactly what had happened on that night fourteen years ago. I wasn't a fan of Marisa and didn't feel a lot of empathy for her, but she was certainly an interesting and complicated character. This story is told from several points of view and I partially read it and listened to the audiobook, which I recently purchased. The narration was well done and also had several narrators.

Marisa is the surviving twin after her sister was murdered when they were sixteen and there are so many secrets and lies surrounding what actually happened in the events leading up to that night, that Marisa doesn't know what family or friends she can turn to. She finally seeks out the investigating - and almost retired - police detective that worked the case years ago, so she can get closure or an answer. There's the mysterious new neighbour, the controlling sister, the secretive best friend, the ex-criminal old boyfriend, a car accident, amnesia, and so forth.

This is an intriguing book and it left me with heaps of questions and I did suspect the correct person as the murderer near to the end, but I wasn't expecting the final twist. My thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in return for my opinion. 4 stars.

I received an ARC ofThe Lies I Told by Mary Burton in exchange for an honest review. This book was amazing right from the first page! There were so many times I was certain I had the killer figured out only to be wrong at the end. I love a book that keeps you guessing until the last chapter. The multiple points of view kept the pace moving and I love getting other characters reactions to things that are happening. The chapter from the killers point of view in the beginning gave me chills. I had to go back and reread some things after I finished the entire book because I wanted to read things again once I knew the ending. Solid 4 star read and would highly recommend.

I quite enjoyed this story.   If you don't enjoy stories where a long ago unsolved murder is eventually solved then I guess you won't like this one. If you like the truth to come out even if it takes over a decade,  then this one might just be for you. 


This story is intricately woven and fast paced. It will keep you turning the page for more.   I stumbled a couple times with the different POV it is written in but,  these POV are essential to the telling of the story.  This is quite the thriller, enjoy the ride!

The Lies I Told was a fantastic read with an intriguing plot following a woman who begins looking into her twin sister's unsolved murder.

Thirteen years ago, Marisa Stockton's twin sister Clare was found murdered on the shores of the James River. Marisa has never gotten over the fact Clare's killer was never found and she throws herself into her work as a photographer to cope with the loss. After a car accident that has erased ten days of Marisa's memories, Marisa begins to believe the crash was no accident. As she digs into Clare's death, she struggles to piece together those missing days, feeling like she's lost a vital clue. But as Marisa closes in on a killer, she doesn't realize they've been watching her every move.

The plot in The Lies I Told pulled me in right away and I found myself caught up in Marisa's search for answers, both about her sister's death and the car crash that nearly killed her. Marisa remembers next to nothing about the days leading up to the crash but what she does remember is feeling afraid. She turns to the detective that investigated her sister's death to get information about the case as well as to get the report on her accident. I liked that Marisa had no formal training as an investigator and that she was just someone searching for the truth. A lot of her investigation is going over old ground in the hopes someone will change their story and I enjoyed this aspect as it filled us in on what happened when Clare died. Marisa's investigation went in several directions I wasn't expecting and I thought the ending was very well done with just the right amount of suspense to keep you guessing on how everything would turn out.

Marisa was an interesting character to follow and I found myself really enjoying her perspective. Marisa is a recovering addict and alcoholic, having been sober for one year. Her struggles with wanting to drink were hard to read about and it's clear she hasn't had an easy life. Her need to find Clare's killer was understandable and I actually found it to be a bit strange that she was seemingly the only one who cared about finding the killer. There is a romance subplot in the book between Marisa and her neighbor but it's incredibly minor and not at all the focus of the book. In addition to following Marisa's character, we get chapters from the points of view of several other characters including the killer. The killer's chapters were disturbing as it's clear the person has an unhealthy obsession with Marisa/Clare.

Overall The Lies I Told was a great read and I would highly recommend it if you're looking for an intriguing mystery to read.

One of my ‘authors to watch out for’, I couldn’t pass up a chance to read a Mary Burton book. While the premise was definitely intriguing, made so especially because it involved woman’s quest to find out what happened to her sister, there were a couple of things that made this a little less of what it could’ve been for me.
The story is told from multiple points of view, and while I don’t mind this type of narration in general, if it is done so, I think the different points of view need to add something to the story. In this case, I didn’t think so. I could do with a few of those voices without and it wouldn’t hurt the storyline. And some of the characters, as with their voices, didn’t appeal to me either.

Give this one a try, especially like me you’re a fan of this author.

It took me a very long time to read this book because there were so many triggers for me, and so many POVS to get through.

Overall, it is a great murder mystery, but I could have done with two or three POVS at best, not the multiples ones Ms Burton incorporated.

What happens to a family when their mother commits suicide and a few years later a daughter is raped and killed. And what if that killed daughter was an identical twin – who was assuming the surviving sister’s persona the night she met her death?

Clare and Marisa are identical twins. Clare is killed when she is sixteen sending Marisa into a decade-long spiral of drugs and alcohol abuse. But she finally decides to try sobriety, only to have a car accident that’s ruled a drunken driving. The only problem? Marisa swears she stopped drinking.

Faces and friends from the past come back to haunt Marisa as she tries to unravel the cause of her accident and still try to find out who murdered her twin. Throw in an older sister who’s as creepy as they come, the cop assigned to solve the past murder, and a slew of friends who I would never want in my sphere and this story just gets more twisted.

The ending was perfect, though, the resolution complete. Ms Burton’s skill as a writer is always a pleasure to encounter.

I’ve been a little backed up with my ARC’s for the year so I’m still playing catch up! I really enjoyed this story and plot! I really felt for Marissa as losing your twin sister at a young age completely messed with her head! Talk about a whole group of unreliable narrators! I thoroughly enjoyed how the whole tale wrapped up. There were certain parts I could see coming, but it didn’t lessen my enjoyment of the book. If you like psychological thrillers, definitely check this book out!

This book was good and it is pretty much guarantee that you will get a great read when you read one of her books.

I love Mary Burton, she is one of my go to authors. Again, she wows me with her characters, and everything else that comes with an amazing story. When one twin dies, the other, Marissa has to move on. Until an accident happens and she has to know what happened that night. When an unexpected encounter with a stranger happens and new evidence occurs; what will Marissa do? Can she trust this stranger? Will she find out what happened to Clare? With twist and good turn of events we too find out what happened.

Marisa Stockton has not had an easy life. Her twin sister Clare was found murdered on a riverbank at the age of 16 and the killer was never found. Her mother committed suicide leaving just Marisa and her older sister Britt. 14 years later Marisa has built a successful career in photography after years of devastation, grief and substance abuse following the tragic loss of her twin and mum. Unfortunately just when things are finally going well for Marisa she suffers a near-fatal road accident and the resulting injuries leave her with no memories of the previous 10 days of her life. However, even through the partial amnesia Marisa cannot shake the feeling that her 'accident' was no accident at all and can't accept the evidence that she was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident particularly after months of hard-won sobriety.
By coincidence the detective assigned to Marisa's case happens to be the very same officer that investigated Clare's murder all those years ago but is this the only coincidence or is Marisa's accident related to Clare's murder?
I am a long-time Mary Burton fan and did enjoy this although I did feel that the 6 points of view storytelling was a tad much at times and felt quite 'busy' but all in all a pretty good read.

The Lies I Told is a complicated web of narratives entwined through time and unreliable narrators. I often find myself slightly lost as the story flowed and had to re-read sections to get my footing. I usually love stories that switch it up in this manner, this one might have just been a bit too much for my taste. Once I got used to the choppiness, I very much enjoyed the story. Overall, a solid dark psychological thriller, but if you are the type of reader that likes plot lines buttoned up nicely, you may be a bit disappointed at the ending.

I absolutely loved the characters in this book. They were so well thought out and really helped to propel the book along. Not that it needed much as I loved the plot. I think I might have found one of my new favourite authors.

Like an old friend, Mary Burton never lets me down. This is yet another great story from her. Marisa is trying to figure out what happened to her twin sister 14 years ago and struggle with her addiction at the same time. This was a darker storyline than usual for this author, but that was not a bad thing by any means. So much crazy in here! Yes, I did figure out the culprit pretty early on, but who cares? Still a good read! Look forward to more!

This was a good book for a chilly fall evening, curled up in front of the fire. I liked the pace of the story but just say I did pick the correct suspect about halfway through the book. It was still good though.I have read many books by this author and I always enjoy them.
