I enjoyed reading this magical fantasy story, in the course of which we follow Tomek on his journey through dangerous and fantastical lands. This novel was originally published in French, and it is brilliant to see translated children’s fiction being published in the UK!

At first I wasn't sure about this book (i completely missed a sentence, and thought it was about an old man for some reason!), but once i realised my mistake, i got really into it. It reads like an old style fairy tale, where the boy goes on a quest. the way he meets people along the way, the events that happen, it just all reads in that kind of older style of storytelling. However, with a more modern feel to it in the writing itself. Also without a lot of the problematic things that you come across in the old tales.
it was a really well paced story, the characters were interesting and enjoyable to read about. It wasn't one of those books that i felt i just couldn't put down, but i enjoyed reading it in a more leisurely way.
definitely worth a read, and i think i'll be tempted to read the counterpart book, hannah's journey.

An enchanting magical fable that takes the reader on a wondrous journey with Tomek on his quest to find a magical drop of water that has life enhancing properties. It is a story of friendship, endurance and perseverance. This fantasy story will enthral younger readers as they join Tomek, venturing through magical lands and meeting mystical beasts. It’s an easy read and should capture the imagination of even the most reluctant young readers, but more able readers may find it a little short and wish that the author had expanded on the captivating lands and places that Tomek visits. Additionally it tends to rush along at the end of the book and I would have preferred more depth as there was in the beginning. However, a great read and I enjoyed it.
