Burning Bridges is an interesting novel about bad guys and sort of good guys. The latter are Quinn and McLaren. They aren't quite honest, and Quinn can be pretty violent, but they have heart. The novel involves a long list of badder guys starting with Flint, the leader of a gang whose son Jamie is trying to make his bones at Quinn's expense. Various incidents occur until the bad guys get narrowed down a bit. That's no small accomplishment since author Mathew Ross keeps finding bad guys to tussle with. Maybe too many as the novel could use some editing. But I did like it and I do recommend it.

Matthew Ross has published two previous books that formed a series, but his latest book Burning Bridges is a standalone thriller. The story begins two years earlier with a car accident, the death of two people as the screams of a man echo in the dark, moving into the present day as an unconscious wounded man is found on the road at Sheppey Island. Brendan Quinn is a former gangster who decides to collect the money he is owed after his last job almost killed him. The reason for his being shot and what it has to do with his past and the death of his brother is a mystery. The narrative moves seamlessly back and forward in time to reveal how the past has impacted on current happenings and exposes multiple motives, unexpected consequences and the price paid for revenge. An unfolding gem of a tale with plenty of action and twists, making a four and a half star read rating. May there be more of this most unusual hero, a former hard man now coffee shop owner. With thanks to Burning Chair and the author, for an uncorrected advanced reader copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and freely given.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.

This is my first read by Matthew Ross, I thought the premise looked like my kind of read so I began reading not knowing quite what to expect. I have to say I really enjoyed this book, it had a very thrilling start that just grabbed my attention and made me want to continue reading. I think the author has created a strong, likeable, believable and very down to earth character in Quinn and I was rooting for him all the way through. When he is asked to take part in a job it has consequences he never expected. This is a very well written and engaging book with a good plot line. I enjoyed how the timeline moved backwards and forwards so easily and how the author gave glimpses into Quinn’s history and how it has shaped him. I loved the many different story threads which all began to make sense and come together as the book progressed. McLean is a wonderful secondary character who I couldn’t help but like and the perfect foil for Quinn. This is quite an action packed read, with lots going on and is about revenge and family loyalty. I’ve read this in just over a day - overall I found it to be a very entertaining and absorbing read and I hope there is a second book featuring Quinn and McLaren. I’d recommend this if you like the crime genre and I see the author has two other books out which I will definitely find time to read when I can.
