I didn't really get into this story and found it a little slow and macabre. This book just wasn't for me. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book.

This title really puts the detective at the heart and center building the story to a climax lasting long after you've turned those pages. Gutierrez puts an amazing spin on how these woman's lives are interwoven, to what point does Cassie see something that could've her been in Dolores. The dual POV with alternating chapters really helps put everything into perspective with the timeframes of past and present. Leaving small ambiguity. An amazing read!

This is a long story in which Cassie, a true crimes journalist, becomes obsessed with a bigamy case committed, unusually, by a woman. which ends in murder. She tracks down the woman, Lore and persuades her to be interviewed with the idea of writing her story in book form. Cassie has her own troubled relationships which are revealed slowly, alongside the truth of Lore's story which takes a few surprising twists. Each chapter alternates between the two women's voices, and in Lore's case from past to present. It is interspersed with Spanish vocabulary which is easy to understand in context and gives a great sense of place. The story builds up slowly but never loses pace and is a compelling read.

Cassie Bowman, a true crime journalist is on the lookout for another story when she comes across the story of Delores Rivera. Delores, known as Lore, had married two men, Fabian in Laredo and Andres in Mexico City. It is only when Andres comes to Laredo looking for Lore that it results in his murder and the arrest of Fabian.
Cassie is gripped by this story and Lore is willing to talk to Cassie, revealing all. A very gripping story. Told in both Cassie's and Lore's point of view with smatterings of Spanish I loved this story.

Expansive, Absorbing…
True crime writer Cassie Bowman has found a story. Not just any story. Lore Rivera’s story. Married to two men in a situation which ultimately led to murder. The world already knows this story. But Cassie doesn’t want just the meat, she wants the bones. She wants Lore’s story. And she gets it, and with it much more than she could have anticipated. A slow burn tale, both expansive and absorbing and one which will have the reader asking themselves as many questions as the book provides in Lore’s tragic tale. Beautifully crafted, brimming with empathy, pitch perfect characters and a wholly immersive narrative.

Cassie Bowman is a true crime journalist always looking for new stories of death, murder, betrayal in order to boost her own career.

Enter Lore Rivera... a woman married to two men at the same time, one of whom ends up dead at the hands of the other. This is certainly the kind of story which could lead to fame and fortune for Cassie. However Lore, initially, refuses to talk to Cassie but when she does Cassie realises that there is far more to this story than was ever known....and Cassie will not only be forced to delve deep into Lore's life and relationships but also her own.

I love when an unknown writer totally knocks you on your ass! I initially requested this book based on the premise of the story, I had never heard of the author previously and hadn't read many reviews however with a synopsis like this, I had a really good feeling about this and I was not disappointed.

Whilst some people may describe this book as being slow-paced (and I would probably agree), for me, that is the best part of the novel. It's not all-action from page 1, instead it is a slow burning reveal of the life of Lore (and Cassie) and how an intelligent, married woman with children ended up living a double life with two husbands. When and why did it begin? How did she keep it secret for so long? And how did it end with one husband killing the other?

Whilst you would be forgiven for going into the book dead set against relating or sympathising with Lore, she is not a complete villain. The depth of her character jumps off the page and she is certainly someone who will live long in your memory. You may hate her, you may dismiss her but you will never forget her.....and you will never forget what really happened that night!

Thanks to Michael Joseph, Penguin Random House and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is a book that will stay with me for a long long time. As a lover of true crime, the premise itself was enough to draw me in (true crime journalist writes about an old murder) but this book is something quite extraordinary and has me thinking about what it is to be a woman, the choices we make, need, desire and putting others before ourselves and the other way around. With a cast of beautifully drawn, truly rounded characters and a an absolutely riveting end, I can’t recommend enough.

Masterful.
In 1985, Lore Rivera marries Andres Russo in Mexico City, even though she is already married to Fabian Rivera in Laredo, Texas, and they share twin sons. Through her career as an international banker, Lore splits her time between two countries and two families—until the truth is revealed and one husband is arrested for murdering the other.
In 2017, while trawling the internet for the latest, most sensational news reports, struggling true-crime writer Cassie Bowman encounters an article detailing that tragic final act. Cassie is immediately enticed by what is not explored: Why would a woman—a mother—risk everything for a secret double marriage? Cassie sees an opportunity—she’ll track Lore down and capture the full picture, the choices, the deceptions that led to disaster. But the more time she spends with Lore, the more Cassie questions the facts surrounding the murder itself. Soon, her determination to uncover the truth could threaten to derail Lore’s now quiet life—and expose the many secrets both women are hiding.
I loved this book and finished it in a sitting. I highly recommend this book.
