James Bond is missing…. That sentence alone is a reason to read this book! Straight into the action from page 1
Likeable characters, great banter between them, we are introduced into a new trio of 00 characters who have all worked with Bond aka 007.
Fast paced, action packed thriller I would highly recommend. Look forward to the other books to come in the trilogy.

I chose this book due to previous reviews which made me feel it would be of interest. Probably a good read if you’re a devoted fan of James Bond. Unfortunately for me the style of writing was over descriptive every single detail drawn out making it difficult for me to enjoy. This this book was not for me but I do not want to appear harsh as it may be of interest to others who perhaps have more patience.

Double or Nothing is a good thriller ,though a little slow at the beginning it soon picks up pace .There is plenty of action, a good story line and plenty of "00" new characters.A good modern take of the James Bond 007 books .This is the first book of a Trilogy but it is a good standalone .I look forward to reading the next book in the series .Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC.

Loved this and can't wait to read the next one, I love spy stories and any book about MI6 so I was excited to read this and was not disappointed. I loved the three 00 characters and they felt so real and likeable which always helps getting through an action packed book like this.
Bring on the next one please soon

This is a ‘shaken and stirred’ addition to the James Bond theme, I have long been a fan of James Bond, both films and books, this book will suit fans of both. Double or Nothing is a modern take with all of the expected characters, humour and a fine megalomaniac baddie. In fact this has many 00’s, ready to serve queen and country, A taught, fast paced story that gripped me from beginning to end. (This is a complete story, but does have an ending that leads to book two in this trilogy. Can’t wait!) Thank you to HarperCollins and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine freely given.

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for this review copy. This didn't quite hit the mark for me, despite it being packed with action and pace. I was confused right from the start about Bashir. I didnt get a feel for who he was and what he was about and he left me cold. The new agents didn't resonate with me and I wasn't invested enough to really care what happened to any of them, maybe because there were too many characters to keep track of. It felt quite overwhelming as a reader and several times I lost the thread of who was who/ where.
Sadly not a series I will follow.

Apologies but this was a turn-off for me. I managed to get to around 25% but that was as far as i got.
I have never read any of the Ian Fleming books on Bond so I have nothing to compare it with in that respect, although I have obviously seen many of the Bond movies.
For me there were too many characters (agents) for me to get to know and I ended up getting very confused with who was who. The writing itself was clear and the action and suspense was good but I felt that I needed to know more about the characters to remember them and build the reader relationship with them.
As a DNF I will not be sharing this review other than on here and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to read the book.

It breaks my heart a little to write this as I love a good espionage novel and I wanted so much to love the new direction this trilogy was taking. I was pleased that Moneypenny, M and Q (but not as we use to know him) still featured but I just didn’t really warm to the New 00’s.

That said, as expected in a Bond book, there’s plenty of action. Sadly, this one just wasn’t for me. Would I read the second and third instalment? Absolutely! There are some of Ian Flemings work that I didn’t love but I never gave up reading his work and the same applies here.

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins/HarperFiction for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

James Bond has disappeared. The new agents are a new generation and face different enemies. They still have the license to kill but have to tackle the ethics as well as the physical demands.
Familiar characters are still around but not always in the roles expected.
This is the first book in a trilogy and I will be looking out for the next two.
I was never a massive Bond fan but I really enjoyed this book and the new twists.

I did enjoy this book, it makes a good read. Kim has taken on the 00 mantel and not exactly won but has certainly almost managed to emulate Ian Fleming. My only complaint would be that there is too many characters and it can make your head whirl trying to work things out at the beginning.

For me, this was a book in three parts! It started staccato with, to me at least, short sharp sentences to get you into the plot of the book. Then, it seemed to take a bit of a breather, getting its breath back ready for the major part of the story.

The major part of the book expands on the premises set in the first part and is very fast paced. James Bond is missing and we, the new double zeroes, have to find out what happened to him. Kim Sherwood does rather a good job of this and gives us a tale that is both fantastic and real. The book connects rather well with the old-guard in the form on M and Miss Moneypenny and the new double zeroes manage to prove themselves both fallible and human as well as rather good at their jobs and this melds well to offer a story that is well worth your time.

Enough waffle from me, read the book and judge for yourself.

007 is MIA. 009 is on a mission to rescue 003 who has been captured by Rattenfanger, but the rescue does not quite go according to plan. Lots of thrills, spills and derringdo abound in this story, far to much gung-ho for me I’m afraid.

Not a particularly enjoyable read for me, I thought it too lengthy and there was a lot of unnecessary prose, a good edit would work wonders. The author has made a really good job of taking up the IF baton, but the story needs to be more succinct. At the moment it’s too busy.

A good read for action seekers and thriller buffs.

Thank you NetGalley.

T his story was full of non stop action. An expansion on James Bond 007 with several of the old cast running the department. There is still a megalomaniac trying to control the world and a group of spies with 00 prefixes trying to stop him. It also relates to the real world with things that are happening now, which makes it more real. Interesting conclusion..

Double or Nothing by Kim Sherwood brings a new voice to the Bond world and it is a good one. Firmly rooted in all things James but with  a fresh feel with plot twists aplenty. A clever blend of characters whom we feel we know from both the books and films with new distinct individuals who are deftly drawn from double 00' s to Phoebe, M's assistant.  This expansion of focus onto a number of lead characters makes for a gripping tale of treachery and the examination of the conflicts of loyalty to lovers, country,  family etc. I greatly look forward to the next in the series. Thank you to Harper Collins and Netgalley for a free ARC and a good read in return for an unbiased review.

James Bond 007 was always going to be a hard act. to follow, but, a fast paced opening introducing two exciting new characters was a great place to start. After a promising start the story stalled for a bit to introduce another new 00 agent/numbers, and to generate a back story of how the agency had developed over the years with Ms Moneypenny now in charge. The plot and pace pick up after this with a few twists that keep you wondering who is working for who, not to mention what happened to James Bond.

Kim Sherwood should get an extra star for having a title with multiple puns in it. The book cover is clever as well as lovely.

If you are more of a George Smiley fan than a James Bond fan, like me, don’t worry because this novel has layers, including the hunt for a mole.

It’s a thriller, but it draws the reader in from the start because of the believable inner life of the protagonists. It’s paced well and if you are interested in classic cars or watches there are a plethora of them.

Like the originals it seems there are only a limited number of agents who can save the world and they have to run around the world to do so. And this one contains humour just as ironic but more acceptable today.

As others have said some of the original characters remain. My favourite was Mrs Keator, although Moneypenny was also well drawn.

The book contains themes of family, absence and humanity, and asks moral questions. I think the quotation which anchors the book is Walt Whitman who also says ‘In all people I see myself’

It’s a great read. Bring on the next two!

I was never really a fan of James Bond, either on the page or on the screen however I was offered this book as a widget and was intrigued to pick it up.

And boy I am glad I did! I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though it is not my usual type of book.

As much as we know 007, have we ever really considered the other 'numbers' here we meet them - 003, 004 and 009. Bond has been captured and the others are determined to find out what has happened to him.

I really loved all three of the main characters, their personalities were drawn out expertly and their back stories were very interesting.

A thoroughly enjoyable read.

3.5 stars rounded up

007 is missing possibly dead, the only certain thing is that Rattenfänger PMC ( meaning Ratcatcher /Pied Piper) a private military company have their ratty fingers all over it. So, here is the new generation. There’s 003 Johanna Harwood, 004 Joseph Dryden and 009 Sid (Azar Siddig) Bashir among others. Their names don’t have quite the same ring as “the name is Bond, James Bond “do they? Just the same as Bond though, they do have a license to kill. Will they be “shaken not stirred“ in their latest assignments to protect our national interests? Tech billionaire so Bertram Paradise makes a huge claim, that his company can reverse the climate crisis. Can he or is his claim baloney? The agents task is to get to the truth as Rattenfänger’s sticky fingers seem to be all over this too. In addition, there is an MI6 mole ….Things get mighty hot and dangerous pretty quickly. As the plot unfolds will readers be ‘shaken’ and maybe ‘stirred’?!

It takes some chutzpah to try to take on the Bond mantle, has Kim Sherwood pulled it off? In some ways, yes. I really like that Bond in person may not be in it but he casts a long shadow over the whole thing. The climate change focus is good too, bringing the iconic series into the 21st century and making the theme relevant. It has many of the ingredients we expect with plenty of action and numerous twists and turns with it ending on a very good cliffhanger. There are repeat characters such as Moneypenny, M, Q, (now a supercomputer) and CIA operative Felix Leiter. There are also some terrific settings which add colour and vibrancy to the action and I really enjoy those.

However, in other ways Kim Sherwood misses the mark I found I don’t gel with it in the same way as the Ian Fleming originals. It takes a long time to get going, there’s an awful lot going on as it switches from one OO agent to another which it makes it feel disjointed. There are a dizzying amount of characters which makes my head spin.

Overall, kudos to the author as the major plot line is a good one and it does improve and become more pacey as the book progresses and as you become more familiar with the characters.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HarperCollins/HarperFiction for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
