If I wasn't told this was set in 1970 I'd have thought I was in the 1950s, it seemed seriously dated for the time. Very Miss Jean Brodie. Not sure I'll be rushing to find more in the cosy mystery category. There is a bad guy who meets his end, many suspects, more bad guys and a civilian who becomes the detective, aided by a good guy!! It was quite amusing, and left itself completely open for the next instalment. #netgalley #deathinparis

Death in Paris is the the first book in Kate Darroch's Màiri Maguire Mystery series, and I was soon hooked! It didn't take long for me to become acquainted with Màiri, a school teacher in Glasgow, who takes a job in Istanbul. On the way there she stops in Paris with her best friend Lianna, but Lianna ends up in prison. Great characters - Màiri is strong, loyal, intelligent and adventurous - and an engrossing plot resulted in a terrific read. Highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from BooksGoSocial via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.

3.5

This is a good cozy mystery. While the main character is Mairi, the book gives brief narratives of other characters.

I like that the author included a chart with information on the characters and their whereabouts. Mairi leaves side notes. These details added to the story.

The ending left on an interesting cliffhanger.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read the ARC.

Death in Paris by Kate Darroch

⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars.

This book follows Mairi Maguire on a trip to Paris with her friend Lianna. Lianna is currently dealing with a tax inspection and when the tax inspector dealing with her case ends up dead Lianna is charged with his murder. Can Mairi solve the case and help prove her friend’s innocence.

This was a good short read at only 180 pages but a lot of action is packed into those pages. We meet all the characters early on and I have to admit it did take a couple of chapters for me to get my head around who everyone is.

The format of this book was good as well as Mairi keeps a notebook of everyone’s whereabouts and clues and there are excerpts of this throughout the book.

This is a good historical cosy crime book which is the start of a series and the ending very nicely sets up the next story.

I am torn over my book review for this cozy mystery novel. I started reading it as part of the "Love Books Tours" read-along with a group of readers from the UK. I wanted to love it, I really did. I liked it, but I did not love it. And I am torn because I know that Kate Darroch is a new novelist and I want to support her chosen career!

I do not want to spoil the story, so I'll be a bit vague with my evaluation while also explaining why it is a three-star story. (1) I liked the characters--five stars. (2) The solution to the mystery was actually clever and surprised me. Five stars. (3) The point of view switching was confusing, and I'm not sure if that is because I read it on my Kindle, or for another reason. But that drove me a bit "batty" especially in the latter chapters, so I'll give this two and a half stars. (4) This is a group of teachers, and the main character has been a star teacher for years. She would NEVER say "Me and my friend." Never. One star for this recurring error. (5) Culture and time period nods were nice, but could have been more pronounced. Three stars. (6) Show more, tell less. Two stars. (7) I felt like the plot dragged in spots that it shouldn't have dragged, and then the solving of the mystery happened in the blink of an eye. Three stars.

The end is a bit of a cliffhanger, so I *do* want to read book two.

If you are a fan of cozy mysteries from across the pond, this book is going to be one you will enjoy.

Thank you to NetGalley, Kelly from Love Books Tours and the author, Kate Darroch, for a review copy of this novel. All opinions are my own.

I was really excited about the concept of this book, and it had a strong start. But nearing the middle of the book, it slowed down and wasn’t that interesting. It picked up again at the end though, which was nice. It was a cute cozy mystery and I was happy to find out that everything got resolved in the end and that there wasn’t really anything that we were left wondering.

Unfortunately this book wasn’t one that I found I was able to fully get into and enjoy. I can’t pick fault necessarily, it just wasn’t something I found myself wanting to continue but I think that’s more of a reflection on my preferences at the time of reading than the story itself.

The first in a new series, Màiri Maguire is a teacher in Glasgow during the 1970s, and receives a job offer to teach in Istanbul, Turkey. Màiri and her friend Lianna decide to spend time in Paris; however Lianna is accused of murder and Màiri has less than a week to prove Lianna's innocence.

I felt this book started a bit slow. By the time they landed in Paris, the pace picked up considerably. I do like Màiri, Lianna, and Major Peverel. The book kept me guessing as to the culprit. "Màiri’s Mental Note" is a touch I really like, and I'm thinking it's a technique I'd like to adapt for my workday.

I was a bit confused with the 1970s setting while moving between first- and third-person. I stuck with the book and was able to eventually sort it out.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing this book to me. All opinions are my own.

Death in Paris starts off right in the exciting part of the story, making me want to find out every last detail! Mairi, the main character, is telling us what happened and how her friend Lianna is led away in handcuffs by the French police. I felt terrible for her; fancy having a friend who turned out to be a murderer!

Kate Darroch, the author, has done a great job in setting the scene, luring you in straight away. The story is written in a hilarious way, but the suspense was there in every line. Mairi is a great character, and I felt for her. Life hasn’t been easy for the last few months, and now her friend is arrested on suspicion of murder.

Mairi is helped by a gentleman, but is he who he says he is? And is he actually helping? The story has some brilliant characters and it’s hard to choose a favourite. The helping gentleman probably wins… Most of the story is set in Paris, where Mairi and Lianna were meant to spend a few relaxed days before travelling onwards.

I love the way Mairi tells us the story. It’s full of wit and observations, making you feel at home. The book didn’t take me long to read, as I couldn’t put it down! There are different groups working together or against one another, so a few times I struggled to remember who was what in the book, but it does make it obvious as you read. Death in Paris tells you a little about Paris, which makes it an even better read. I didn’t know anything about the French justice system, so that side of the story was interesting as well.

Mairi has decided to do all she can to find the real murderer, with the help of the kind gentleman. The French police isn’t looking for the murderer, as they have Lianna, so it’s up to Mairi to help her friend. Obviously, this task is not without danger, but Mairi is determined. There is a shocker of a cliffhanger at the end of the book though, so be warned! I thoroughly enjoyed Death in Paris and can’t wait for the next one in the series!

This is an interesting mystery.
Màiri Maguire teaches in top schools all over the world, but on days like today she wishes she had never left Glasgow!
8:10 a.m. on 15th August 1970. They’ve been in Paris only 12 hours. Lianna is locked up in jail, charged with murder. Màiri is being hunted by murderous criminals. She never dreamt that travelling outside Scotland would be so dangerous. Will Màiri ever again see her comfy home in Merrylea, her loving sisters Morag and Katriona, her schoolboy nephew Niall?
Major Ellis Peverel seldom leaves Màiri's side. Respected by the Paris police, shrouded in secrets, who is this man? Is he a true friend to Màiri, or does he have an agenda of his own?
Who really killed the corrupt taxman for whose death Lianna has been framed? Màiri has only 6 days to find the murderer. Can she free Lianna in time? Or must she choose between her friend's freedom and her own livelihood… if she’s still alive.
Headed for a teaching job in Istanbul via Paris Mairi never expected to be the victim of a murder and bombing threat.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Death in Paris was a wonderful read. I quite enjoyed the well-crafted characters, as well as, the overall story. It was entertaining and kept me intrigued until the very end. Great job! Can’t wait to read more by this author in the future.

First in the series is a bit of a first for me! But I'm glad I am starting this series from the beginning (I tend to find out about these authors and series after a few books have already been written).

For me it was a slow start but got better as I read on. Once I got to know the characters and what was happening I was more drawn in to the story. I did like the characters, Màiri Maguire and the detective and found this a true cosy read in every since of the word.

It is fun, somewhat mysterious, cute and still has that bit of humour you want from a book like this. I now look forward to seeing what comes next from this author and in this series.

Mary is one of the poshest, most hilarious and an intriguing sleuth in the history of thriller fiction. The book was a little slow in the beginning but once it hit the action peak, it was an amazing read that kept me giggling and reading non-stop throughout.

Would definitely recommend it to cozy mystery fans.
