I was expecting a nice little mystery with this one, but wasn't prepared for the few twists that came up in the end.

This is the first book in the Màiri Maguire Cozy Mysteries series, and we are introduced to the titular Màiri, a schoolteacher who's on her way to Turkey after her boyfriend breaks up with her in a devastating manner. To get to Turkey, she and her friend Lianna go on a tour and stop by Paris. Unfortunately, someone from the tour gets murdered, and Lianna is the prime suspect.

This was a bit slow for me at the beginning. Or perhaps I just wasn't as into it as I hoped I would be. I don't read a lot of cozy mysteries, and I was hoping that this would be the book to start me reading more of these.

It was alright, a fun read all in all. The book does get better after reaching past the 50% mark. I can see this book appealing to readers who already love cozy mysteries, or anyone who wants some light reading.

I give this book 3 stars.

Thank you for the e-arc, Netgalley and Ad Astra Press, Inc.!

This book took me a while to really get into the storyline. I also had trouble to really connecting to the characters. Over half way through I finally got interested in the book and finally felt a connection to our protagonist. Overall it was interesting and I will give the 2nd book in the series a try.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.

1970- Mari is running from a bad breakup and decides to include her best friend in her plans to leave home and go teach in another country.
A messy divorce leading to troubles with a slimy taxman make this opportunity very appealing to bestie Kianna as well. Taking a vacation trip before reporting to the new job seems like a dream. The dream becomes a nightmare as they find the evil taxman is on board and Kianna is not the only one seeming to have issues with him.
When the tour they are on arrives in Paris, events take a turn and the taxman is discovered thrown to his death from the Eiffel tower.
Kianna is arrested as the prime suspect but Mari and her mysterious new friend Major Ellis Peverell take on the task of digging through the lies to find the real killer.

Not what I was expecting but a nice surprise.
I had no idea going in this book took place in the '70s and must admit when I read that on the first page I felt nervous. I was looking for a quick cozy mystery not a history lesson.
I soon realized that although the time period matters to the story in no way does it effect the tale negatively. Although the '70s were the era of woman's lib and fighting for equality it was not was not overdone with the main character being told to mind her place or her ideas not taking seriously. I liked that a lot. Only 2 things kept this from being a 5 stars read. I found the jumping back and forth between characters, both good guys and bad to be confusing as well as the introduction of so many characters at once ,it was hard to keep them straight . That said I enjoyed this tale and will be continuing the series soon.
4 stars on goodreads
I received this book free from #netgalley for a fair and honest review

Funnily enough, although the central plot of this book was the death in Paris, it was the part I appreciated the least. I ended up finding the set-up unique and the narrative voice entertaining despite the gaping holes of things our lead protagonist missed.
It is the 1970s, and Màiri has decided to suddenly take up a job in a country very unlike the one she is used to. Her reasons for doing so take up some space in the plotline, but I was not complaining. It was fun to see something like this play out in a different time and place than I am used to (although I am unaware of how accurate the placements were).
To use the time between the new job and the old, She decides to go on a package tour of sorts with her best friend, who she is taking along with her for the job as well.
In the background, there are some shady things underway. Not everyone's history made complete sense but, for the most part, fit into the bigger picture.
A man most people disliked, but many initially said(lied) they had no prior knowledge of, is found dead. This puts the breaks on otherwise happy plans, so our leading lady decides to investigate. She does seem to dig the hole a little deeper instead of coming to the right conclusions. She is earnest but ignores many obvious facts (which, if thought too closely about, would make sense for someone who has never 'detected' before).
It was a light book, which worked well mostly because I did not think too much about the reasoning behind things. I am not sure I will be following up with the series, but I think it was a decent first introduction to a series.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

I will start by saying I am very new to the genre of cozy mystery, though it has easily become my favorite form of escapism from reality. Kate Darroch's Death in Paris was a lot different than many of the cozies I have previously read.

Death in Paris introduces us to Màiri Maguire, a school teacher living in Glasgow who decides to take a new job after her longtime boyfriends upends everything she thought she knew about their life together. Màiri sets off with her best friend, Lianna, who is also facing some personal difficulties after the end of her marriage. Prior to their final destination in Istanbul, Màiri and Lianna plan a leisure trip in Paris. Upon arrival, a death at the Eifel Tower leads to Lianna being locked up as the likely killer. Màiri must work to prove her friends innocence before they are set to complete their journey to Istanbul.

Màiri is a likeable heroine for this story, however there were times when I felt like the narration drifted out of first person to where she was talking to the reader directly. I also felt that some of the transitions to other characters left me confused as to the POV during that scene.

As this is the first in a new cozy series, there is a lot of getting to know Màiri, I do tend to find the first in a series to be a little slower in the beginning and pick up heading between the 30 -50% mark and in subsequent books. Death in Paris didn't really pick up for me until after the 60% mark. I will be honest that if it wasn't a Net Galley book I was accepted to review, I may have DNF'd around the 30% mark (my usual deciding point). That being said, I stuck with it until the end, and not only have already download the next book in the series to my Kindle, I have the release date for book 3 marked in my calendar.

Màiri Maguire has so much potential to keep me coming back for more and I am excited to see what Kate Darroch does with her next!

This was a good cozy mystery. I found the writing a bit confusing but entertaining nonetheless. I loved the friendship component of the book and the setting. The magic of Paris and England come through the writing.

Irish school teacher Màiri Maguire is introduced in Death in Paris, the first of a new mystery series by Kate Darroch. The opening sees Màiri finishing out the current term at the school where she teaches and introduces the reader to various characters that will play a pivotal role in the story. Màiri meets up with her longtime boyfriend for dinner and is blindsided when, instead of talking about their future, he informs her that he has met someone that he is going to marry and take a job as a lecturer at a local university. He also tells her that he expects that she will become friends with his fiancee and help her settle in and meet people. Màiri subsequently informs him that will be impossible as she has been offered a job in Istanbul. Meanwhile, Màiri's friend Lianna has been dealing with her own problems in the form a tax issue of her ex-husband's. The two of them decide that the job in Istanbul is the answer to both of their problems and head first to Paris for a holiday then will go on to Istanbul. Unfortunately, the tax man shows up on the same holiday tour that they are on and winds up dead the first night in Paris with Lianna as the primary suspect.

This book was slow to start with a lot of disjointed scenes and dialogue. I was glad when it finally even out and became an integrated storyline. To be fair, this was a decent way to introduce the multiple unrelated characters who made up the tour group. I did find that some of the scenes and characters seemed a bit contrived and at times the story became a bit clumsy with the various transitions. Overall, I enjoyed this story as it had a decent number of different suspects, motives, and scenarios as to how the murder could have occurred with an interesting final reveal that kept me guessing. The scenes between Màiri and the Major were very well developed as they set down their theories of the crime and were able to work through the various timeline changers that occurred based on new information as it was discovered.

The author has done a good job of developing a core group of characters to continue into future installments of this series and it will be interesting to see what is in store for Màiri and Lianna as they travel to Istanbul and subsequently begin their new positions there.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Let me start this review by stating the issues I had with this story was due to personal preference and my own pickiness with cozies. Also what is important - this a arc review so formatting will be different for the published.

I went into this expecting a lot more. As someone who is a fan of cozies I realised fast this was not one which met my personal tastes but would be for others. I personally enjoy more small town cozies with a focus like baking or working as journalist but this was the first time I read one following a teacher.

The story itself was all over the place and with a changing timeline I couldn’t keep up, let alone the amount of random characters. Cozy series for me follow the same two or three characters who I adore but I’ve found no connection to the main character here. With two ex husbands immediately it was boring and predictable while also making me very confused somehow.

This book, unfortunately, is a victim of its formatting. There were charts included which should have made everything easier to understand but with the way that ebooks are presented, they were impossible to read and use. Additionally, Mairi writes notes to herself and these were in such a large font that they were distracting. Both these things made it difficult to stay in the story. The mystery itself was OK. It was written in a weird way, and I felt like I started the book a few chapters in, with the way the characters were thrown at you and you were supposed to know what was going on. Despite all this, I will read the next one because this one was left with such a cliffhanger but I hope that these issues are worked out.

I got 2% in this book and I just couldn’t read anymore. There was so much deletion of characters names but we were never told who they were when they were first mentioned so I was so confused. I’m not a fan of the writing style, it’s too informal for my liking.

this is a lovely cause you read and it is a proper nostalgic to technical that you could always return to read to when you feel like it the writing style is very engaging and it is so sorry that I didn't want to put the book Murray has been teaching up the k Academy for Girls in Scotland however during summer break she expected that her longtime boyfriend had an announcement. This book is and I would highly recommended to us to read.

Wow... this was such a fun read. I really liked how Darroch was able to create such dimensional and fun characters. I also enjoyed the "coziness" of this mystery. I think that this was an unpredictable game of Clue. I can't wait to read more from this author.

This was great - I can't wait to read more of this series. The heroine was lovely and resourceful and her secret service sidekick (with a hint of romance) made for a good pairing.

I enjoyed the details in this book. Mystery is always a thing for such genre lovers. It took me awhile, but sometimes it’s always worth the wait. Thankyou for this.

I really enjoyed my reading ! It was a little bit slow at first but it was necessary for the plot.

This type of book is a cosy reading, like it's a book that you can't close before finishing it because it's so cute and the mystery part makes you want to know what will happened next. I really love this book so I want to thank you NetGalley and the publisher for send me this ebook.

I will definitively read the next one because Mairi is a comfort character. It is a really good cosy mystery book.

The mystery was good. Hard to get into this book at first but I kept on because I liked the characters. May not be everyone's cup of tea but give it a try. Fast paced read. Thanks #netgalley and #BooksGoSocial for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.

Màiri Maguire has been teaching at the Kelvin Academy for Girls in Glasgow, Scotland but the summer holiday break took an unexpected turn with an announcement from long-time boyfriend Brian. Best friend Lianna Stuart is also stressed as estranged husband Donal hasn’t been truthful to the tax man putting her in the "hot seat." Màiri never expected a job offer to teach in Istanbul when she took her students to a job fair before the end of term but it quickly became her new life plan. She even convinced Lianna to join her and secured her a position too. What could possibly go wrong?

Màiri, Lianna, and Major Ellis Peverel meet on the boat train to Paris. Introduction of the major is skillfully written with mystery. At first it is difficult to ascertain whether he’s an asset to know or a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Humor adds a light touch with Màiri’s independent streak in high gear except when Major Peverel is offering her delicious tea that tastes like home. Addition of "Màiri’s Mental Note" that she uses as part of her sleuthing technique during the investigation is a natural fit as teachers make many mental notes during the course of their work day.

Màiri and Lianna had such an adventuresome beginning I can't wait to read what’s next when they arrive in Istanbul. The only thing for certain is that more lively adventures await these friends.

My sincere thanks to Kate Darroch, and Books Go Social for my complimentary digital copy of this title, via NetGalley, in exchange for my honest review.

The book is set in the 1970 s and you would think that it would not hold my interest but the quirky ways of mairi mcquire really hold my interest and the way she is telling a story which is very alien to me but I still enjoy it because it's a cozy mystery and I have never read a mystery like this and I like to dabble in genres like these and if you are from Glasgow and native to that place you will definitely connect with the story and have even more fun with the story and the mystery of the death of charlie stout.

I just didn't enjoy this book. The first person present tense POV was awkward and took me out of the story.
