Gritty and tense, I really enjoyed this book. Fast paced plot and I couldn't put it down in parts. I would definitely recommend this to other psychological thriller readers and would read more by this author.

The title makes you think psychological thriller and I'm a big fan of Sarah's books as I know she writes psychological thrillers so I was extremely excited to listen to this audiobook.
It was tense, I was holding my breath at times, I listened to it within 2 days because it had me on the edge of my seat and I needed to know! I can't really say anything without spoiling the storyline.
But if you want a good psychological thriller that grips you from the start with excellent narration then this is the one for you!
Go get it!
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers for an advanced copy for an honest review.

With thanks to the author, publishers HarperCollins UK Audio, and NetGalley for providing me with an advance copy of this work in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

A gripping plot, with some interesting twists along the way, and sprinkled with a few red herrings (Robert’s crash) to throw the reader off the scent, results in a very engaging tale of a woman driven to the edge of her sanity that will do all in her power to protect her family.

The author does a great job of building the pressure on Emma through a sequence of events that, while appearing largely innocuous and far-fetched to her, are interpreted by others in an entirely different way, and drastically change the perception of those around her about her. The increasing desperation of her plight is directly reflected in the ever-increasing worry and exasperation felt by Emma, as her situation gets more and more hopeless.

I did think it was a little hard to swallow how in the space of 10 days Emily’s relationship with her family went from being apparently fairly normal to a point where they lost all faith in her and thought she had lost her mind. It seemed a bit too easy that they automatically assumed she was at fault like they did, rather than show concern for her welfare.

That aside though, I really enjoyed this book and its big (and for me at least unexpected) reveal at the end, while the narrator did an excellent job with all of the characters, but with Emma in particular, to really enhance my experience of this book even more.

I did this book as an audio and i found the book to be quite slow at the beginning but I absolutely loved behind her eyes so I kept with it and I'm so glad I did as it really picked up to the point I couldn't stop listening! It had me guessing all the way throughout and I did not guess the twist. I love when this happens to me!!

Will definitely be picking up more of Sarah Pinboroughs books!

Unreliable female narrators remain very much in vogue in domestic thrillers, and Insomnia features one of these, a woman on the cusp of forty who is worried that she is going to lose her mind as her mother did, on her fortieth birthday. Fair enough so far, childhood trauma and anxiety can lead people to believe unlikely things. What I really struggled to believe was that in the space of just a week, an entire family can turn against the mother and think she is going mad just because she doesn't sleep for a few nights. Where is the concern for her wellbeing? Why are they immediately angry with her rather than worried? Does nobody think maybe she ought to see a GP rather than just make the immediate assumption that she is losing her mind? It's not a slow and subtle swaying of people's opinion from thinking of her as capable and intelligent over to thinking perhaps she's unwell, it's almost instant, and it didn't ring true. Particularly because it's fairly common for forty year old women not to sleep very well. I think it would have felt more realistic to me if it had happened over a longer period of time, or if the people around Emma had seemed more concerned about her welfare.

There are a few clever red herrings scattered about throughout the plot which lead the reader to wonder what is going on, whether Emma is mad, or whether someone is out to get her, and who it could be. Even though I figured out some of what was happening, the why was quite a surprise, and I'm on the fence about whether I liked it or not. Either way, it was original at least!

I liked the narrator, and found her easy to listen to.

Approaching the big four-oh my self (shhh... don't tell anyone!), I was intrigued when I read the blurb to this book.

This book takes us down a terrifying path which is made worse by an unreliable narrator. The differing views on events in the story by each of the characters certainly gave an idea of what it would be like to be slowly losing your mind.

While I didn't find Emma to be a particularly likeable character, i certainly could empathise, and found myself rooting for her and her sanity throughout.

I liked the twist at the end, and the book kept me interested all the way through.

The narrator had a wonderfully rich storytelling voice, and the distinct voices and accents very clear and made it easy to identify which character was talking.

All in all, an enjoyable listen.

I almost DNF, i found it went around in circles, very repetitive that i was slowly using interest. For that reason i didnt fully enjoy this.

But the outcome i didnt quite forsee and did have me querying and wondering, but the book only picked up in the last 20% of the book.

The narrator was clear and easy to hear each character but thats also due to the writting.

Another brilliant book by Sarah, in what has been an amazing writing career. It was doubly brilliant to listen instead of read it, which made it all the more creepy. Brilliant story, engaging plot. Thank you.

I listened to this over the course of a week as an audio book, and really looked forward to my moments of me time, when I could immerse myself in this unsettling listen.

As Emma approaches her 40th birthday, a shocking event and lack of sleep start to make her fear that the madness her mother succumbed to is going to consume her too.

The atmosphere of the book is amazing; I was never quite sure if Emma was suffering delusions because of her lack of sleep, whether there was genuinely an inherited condition, or whether she was actually under attack. The tension was almost unbearable as I started to understand what had happened all those years earlier, but I was still not entirely sure who to trust, right up until the final chapters.

I really loved this and would like to thank the publishers and NetGalley for the advance copy in return for an honest review.

Emma is approaching her fortieth birthday and is worried that she is going to end up like her mum did. Her mum started losing her mind at forty and is now in a secure hospital with dementia. One thing Emma has started doing is not sleeping at night and starting looking in on her children, every night and checking the doors are locked.

One day, Emma receives an urgent phone call from her sister to go to the hospital. When she gets there, she finds her mum, who she hasn’t seen in years there. When her mum dies unexpectedly, Emma is accused of killing her so is investigated by the police. Her marriage is beginning to fall apart. She finds out her daughter is having an affair with a married man and she knows the couple as friends, she is devastated.

Her car gets scratched. There are bad reviews put on about her work so she is put on leave while they investigate where the reviews came from.

And every day her fortieth birthday is getting closer. She feels like she is getting more and more like her mum. And losing her mind.

This was a fantastic psychological thriller. I really enjoyed listening to the audio version of this book. I liked the narrator’s voice which made listening to the book easier. This is the first audio book I have listened to and it has encouraged me to listen to more.

Pinborough's ʙᴇʜɪɴᴅ ʜᴇʀ ᴇʏᴇs is one of my all time favourite thrillers that had me utterly spellbound, so I had high hopes for this, but whilst it was a unique and intriguing plot, it didn’t blow me away.

Chilling, ethereal and for want of a better word, 'trippy', this started off pretty strong: we have an unreliable narrator, a plot that will make you constantly question what's real and what's not, complex mother-daughter relationships, and the twisting of an already awful condition into a nightmare. Sadly, the fact I listened to this as audiobook is, I think, what made the book fall flat for me.

The plot is repetitive - which I get, it gets us into the MC's head, replicating her haze and confusion through lack of sleep, but this was really, really frustrating to listen to. It was like listening to one big argument, as Emma bickered her way through the book, with basically her entire family, and the pacing felt slow to me. Although at the start some aspects felt obvious, I did second guess everything, knowing Pinborough's style, but the ending fell flat in my opinion, and not one twist dropped my jaw or shocked me. I probably really need to stop comparing author's books, but in comparison to BHE, this just didn't grip me at all.

As always though, this is only my opinion - I may have enjoyed it more had I read it; I may not.

This audiobook was great!! An easy story to predict, which I probab,y did by about 30% in but it still head my interest because the detail and the plot twists kept in interesting all the way until the end. There is good depth in the characters, with plenty of extra sub plots helping to detract attention away from the main story and to help confuse. I was perplexed by the very beginning and it not being drawn upon further however by the time I finished it all made sense.
Good choice of narrator too. I was kept interested throughout and wanted to keep listening.

Another fantastic addition to Sarah's writing career, and this time listening to it rather than reading it made a superb difference! This was creepy and shocking and I love it!

Argh! A fantastic read. Emma is a successful lawyer who has two children and a happy marriage. Her picture perfect life comes grinding to a halt when her estranged mother bashes her head against a mirror in the care home she's been kept in. Emma's older sister Phoebe comes back into her life to visit their mother.

Emma is approaching her fortieth birthday, the same their mother went mad....strange things start to happen. Her mother didn't sleep properly after turning forty and now Emma is struggling to sleep. Emma's young son is scared of her and keeps drawing creepy pictures of a scary figure looming over him in bed.

This was a great read. Emma is a really relatable and likeable character which always draws me in to a book and makes the story feel real. The pace kept me reading well into the night.

Thank you #netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book.

A gripping thriller that will surely give you the Insomnia it tells you about.
Emma is approaching her 40th birthday and is still haunted by events when she was a child when her mother had a breakdown at age 40 and terrible events occured.
Emma lives with the fear that the same will happen to her and she is now starting with insomnia which was something her mother suffered from.
This is a gripping read and definitely not one you will be able to put down until you have finished reading it.
Amazingly written and there are twists and turns at every stage.
Highly recommended and one of best thrillers I have read this year.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read in return for a review.
