I really enjoy anything by Jeffrey Archer, I'm a really big fan of his work. I really enjoyed this one however I need to go back and read the first ones in this series to get to know the characters a bit better. Jeffrey's writing style is absolutely brilliant and this book was no exception. The story line for this book was well thought out and well executed with plenty of surprises thrown in.

Thank you for letting me read it, it's a fantastic read.

It’s been a number of years since I’ve read a book by Jeffrey Archer. This story results around several police officers, a well known criminal, a terrorist and the royal family.

I hadn’t read the previous books in the series which left me feeling as though I was playing constant catch up. While the recaps were sufficient to bring me up to speed with the story, it still felt as though I was stepping into the middle of something.

I disliked the links between some of the characters, I.e. one of the police officer’s wives being best friends with the criminal’s husband; this just felt too convenient to be realistic.

It took quite a while for the various threads of the plot to come together although they did all link up eventually. All in all it was on okay story which I may have enjoyed more of i has read the entire series and been more familiar with the characters.

I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I rate it 4.5. This is actually the first of Jeffrey Archer’s book that I read. I know I didn’t realise that this is part of a series, thankfully I realised it quite late in the book and I don’t think it affected me. I think it can definitely be read as a stand-alone. I love that he took real characters from the World and wrote about them. The fact that the story line is set in that period of time yet is still modern makes it enjoyable. I also enjoyed the little drawings depicting a certain content of the book. I only wished I had followed the story from book 1 which would have add stock to the characters in this book. Thank you Harper Fiction and Jeffrey Archer for the advance review copy via NetGalley in exchange for honest feedback.

Well, the master does it again! Jeffrey Archard is certainly a masterful storyteller. This is, to me, his best so far. The characters are so well drawn - the plots are very cleverly written and the whole book moved along at a cracking rate, even the subplots would make a great book on their own! I came late to Mr. Archard's books but I am so pleased to be able to recommend them to any readers who love a really good story and I cannot wait for the next one.

Once again, an addictive and wonderful yarn from one of my all time favourite storytellers. This is the fifth instalment of the William Warwick series, and with its twists and turns it might be my favourite yet.

Expect lots of red herrings, lots of late nights to finish “just one more chapter” and that horrifying feeling that we probably have to wait a whole year to find out what happens next!

Sublime!

With thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Fabulous especially in view of current events. Can imagine this might have happened for real - ever so glad it didn’t though.
Love the author’s books - have read them all

After reading the first few pages you feel like you have bumped into an old friend who tells you about his latest adventures.

Jeffrey Archer’s fifth novel in the Detective William Warwick series has an interesting and very intricate plot, like the previous books in the series.
Taking us back to the 1980s, Scotland Yard is investigating the elite royalty protection command, which is in charge of the safety of the Royal Family. Warwick is put in charge of the investigation into misdeeds within this elite command, as worries mount about the safety of Princess Diana due to terrorist threats. Meanwhile, career criminal and art connoisseur Miles Faulkner concocts plans to enrich himself again.

It was fun to see what new tricks the notorious Miles Faulkner gets up to, while his wife Christina tries to get her hands on his priceless art collection and Faulkner’s lawyer Booth-Watson is in the midst of everything, with everyone trying - and partly succeeding - to double cross everyone else.

Characters are well-developed, with everyday problems occurring which readers can relate to, such as Beth having to resign from her job and finding a new one.
At times hazy, the story unfolds before the reader’s eyes, making the reader feel just like the detectives must feel when confronted with the multilayered puzzle of a new case.

This was not my favourite book in the series, but it was still an entertaining read and definitely had a captivating plot.

Thanks to NetGalley, Jeffrey Archer, and HarperCollins UK for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

JA is such a talented novelist. This is a great book: well researched, a twisting and clever plot and a brilliant, flowing writing style that keeps the reader engaged in the present whilst being intrigued as to what will happen next.
A truly satisfying and rich political novel.
With thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins for the arc

This novel is the fifth book in the William Warwick series. I like Warwick as a character, as this mix of hero and family man. It is always a pleasure to read a new story featuring him. In this instalment, he is still pursuing the Miles Faulkner storyline with a number of twists involving Miles's wife Christina and lawyer Booth Watson. He also needs to investigate the Royal Protection team for fraud. But Diana, Princess of Wales, makes an appearance as victim of a terrorist plot that almost costs her her life. There is a lot going on!
As all Jeffrey Archer's novels, this is a very entertaining story. It is not my favorite of the series though. I found that the multiple storylines made it difficult to follow and, for me, the end was a little abrupt. I assume there is another instalment coming next and this one felt a bit like an in between episode.

I've not read a Jeffrey Archer book for years, but having seen him speak at a recent event, I was curious to know if they were as addictive as they were when I started reading them over 40 years ago. Next in Line is part of a series. However, it worked fine as a stand-alone book, and I rushed through it, finishing it in a matter of days. Twists and turns and a bounty of double-crossings come thick and fast.

I felt engaged with the characters, enjoyed the nostalgia of the timing, and it's a book I'd describe as a proper romp. It's not one that will stay with me for a long time, but it is highly entertaining, and sometimes that's all you want from a book.

So the answer is yes, Archer still has it!

You know what? Mr Archer can write a stonking good yarn that keeps you hooked from start to finish. I've read book 4 but none of the others but it doesn't matter. They work equally well on their own although granted if you read book 5 and went backwards to book 1 there are a few spoilers. This team of characters is great and they are all strong. Yes, there are some implausible moments but well, they are forgivable as the book is highly entertaining. Dealing with royalty, corruption, terrorism, fraud, you name it you go for a roller coaster ride. Highly enjoyable.

A fantastic novel, such an intertwining and rich plotline which moves quickly and keeps the reader invested and interested. I haven't read the others in the series but will certainly be seeking them out. A fantastic novel, showing quite clearly why Archer is at the top of his game.

EXCERPT: An outrider from the Special Forces Group swept into Scotland Yard, closely followed by a green Jaguar and an unmarked Land Rover, while two police motorcycles brought up the rear, completing the royal convoy.

A close protection officer leapt out of the front seat of the Jaguar and opened the back door. The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Peter Imbert, stepped forward and bowed. 'Welcome to Scotland Yard, Your Royal Highness,' he said, and was greeted with that warm, shy smile with which the public had become so familiar.

'Thank you, Sir Peter,' she replied as they shook hands. 'It was kind of you to agree to my unusual request.'

ABOUT 'NEXT IN LINE': London, 1988. Royal fever sweeps the nation as Britain falls in love with the ‘people’s princess’.

Which means for Scotland Yard, the focus is on the elite Royalty Protection Command, and its commanding officer. Entrusted with protecting the most famous family on earth, they quite simply have to be the best. A weak link could spell disaster.

Detective Chief Inspector William Warwick and his Scotland Yard squad are sent in to investigate the team. Maverick ex-undercover operative Ross Hogan is charged with a very sensitive—and unique—responsibility. But it soon becomes clear the problems in Royalty Protection are just the beginning. A renegade organization has the security of the country—and the Crown—in its sights. The only question is which target is next in line…

MY THOUGHTS: Archer has crafted yet another cunning plot, with three interwoven threads; one involving a threat to HRH the Princess of Wales. Miles Faulkner and his dodgy legal representative Booth-Watson make a reappearance, as does Faulkner's estranged wife Christine.

This 5th installment of the William Warwick series includes a terrorist threat, art fraud, theft and numerous other crimes. It also follows William's wife Beth, as she divests herself of a job she is no longer enjoying and sets herself up in business - with Christine!

Despite the slow start - Archer setting the scene! - I soon became invested in the storyline. Anyone not familiar with this author's writing may see the first half of Next in Line as not having much happening because all the action takes place quite late in the book. But believe me, it's worth the wait.

I hope we don't have to wait long for #6!

Although this is #5 in a series, I do believe that it can easily be read as a stand-alone as the author provides enough background information to make this possible.

⭐⭐⭐⭐.3

Next in Line is an excellent novel, well written with many different plots within the storyline. The writing is straight forward and free flowing moving the storyline along rapidly as the various plots develop. This I found refreshing as I find many authors nowadays spend to much time describing irrelevant details that have no bearing on the storyline which I find off putting. A most enjoyable read.

Jeffrey Archer's latest work "Next in Line" is the fifth in a series of the William Warwick novels but can be read as a stand alone book. The series has followed his career from being a constable until now when he is a Detective Chief Inspector and this storyline centres around the British Royal Family during the late eighties and early nineties, with Princess Diana and her protection detail occupying a central role. It is a complex and intriguing story by a master storyteller full of twists and turns throughout. While it is a work of fiction, it does give an insight into the workings of the procedures employed by the protection officers of the Royal Family and indeed the Royal Family itself which is interesting, and probably more so at this time in history.
Archer is the consummate raconteur and never fails to deliver a great yarn, with thoroughly believable characters and brilliant plots and sub-plots. This is a real page turner from the outset and one not to be missed.

My 2nd book in the William Warwick series which I enjoyed as much as the last one (Book 4 and Book 5).
There is so much going on with the Scotland Yard team and their intervention in the Royal Protection team,
Miles Faulkner is the nemesis in Williams side and his wife is now partnering up with Faulkner's ex-wife Christina, the cat and mouse game of Faulkner's art collections and his millions is quite amusing. Each thinking they have got one over each other only to find they have been outwitted. The deviousness of the barrister BW.
I just can't wait to find out what will happen next....
Thank you to the author, Netgalley and Harper Collins UK, Harper Fiction for an ARC in return for an honest review.

When the brother of a TV star dies, getting to the truth leading up to the event proves challenging. Lots of deceit follows but not enough answers. DI Clare Mackay is challenged and frustrated at the obstacles that she faces. An intriguing read with lots of suspense.

I'm enjoying this series and this is a great addition. I'm less concerned with the Miles Faulkner running plot but it doesn't get in the way.
