I get so excited when a new Jeffrey Archer is released. This is the best in the William Warwick series yet, linking the Miles Faulkner case with work on a new case investigating Royal Protection police. Excitement as DI Ross Hogan is appointed Personal Protection Officer to Princess Diana, giving an insight into the role and to the royals back in the 80s. Beth Warwick once again plays a pivotal role with her work in the Fitzmolean Gallery and as an art agent. For all it reads like another time and another world, it's very easy to get lost in this as the master storyteller does it again. #netgalley #NextInLine

This is my first time reading a William Warwick book, but not my first Jeffrey Archer novel.
I can honestly say, that I have enjoyed every JA book that I have read so far, and this one was no exception.
My only gripe was that it seemed to come to a quick ending, and I would have like to have seen a little more of the story. Maybe some of my questions will be answered in the next one!
I will look out for more in this series, and start to read them in order, because I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Jeffrey Archer is a master story teller, and eventhough I have zero interest in politics, he always makes his books interesting, and easy to follow. Well deserving of 5 stars!

I haven’t read any of the other William Warwick books but the premise sounded good so I thought I would give it a go. I feel like I did miss out on some things not having read the previous books but I did still enjoy the story. I liked all twists and turns and the two parallel storylines, I will be reading the next book in the series for sure.

Incredible! I love this series and just devour every page with glee. The plotlines are always superb and the characters are spot on.
Archer is the master of the end of chapter cliff hanger and he definitely doesn't let us down with this epic book.. Next in Line is a true crime rollercoaster. One minute I was up, next minute down. It never stops and it is brilliant. I still love Ross, he is still my favourite character. His love for his daughter is paramount and once he becomes a royal protection officer he has to sort out her care. She quickly becomes another member of the Warwick family. A beautiful family they are to. Warwick and his wife's relationship goes from strength to strength. Archer writes his relationships with a certain panache that just keeps your interest from page one.
All I can say is this book deserves to be read and any accolades it receives will be richly deserved. There is treachery abounds, trust is broken and of course the Royals are involved so what's not to like? absolutely worthy of 5 stars.

I always enjoy Jeffrey Archer books. This one did not disappoint

I really enjoyed this, the 5th in a series but could be read as a standalone. it had loads of twists and turns.

A gripping easy read.

I found this engrossing. I am not usually a detective/mystery story reader, but I enjoyed this book. It had so many twists and turns, and they all seemed to make sense, once I understood them.

You can tell I enjoyed it, as I read it in a few sessions; several chapters instead of several pages at a time.

London, 1988. Royal fever sweeps the nation as Britain falls in love with the ‘people’s princess’.
Which means for Scotland Yard, the focus is on the elite Royalty Protection Command, and its commanding officer. Entrusted with protecting the most famous family on earth, they quite simply have to be the best. A weak link could spell disaster.
Detective Chief Inspector William Warwick and his Scotland Yard squad are sent in to investigate the team. Maverick ex-undercover operative Ross Hogan is charged with a very sensitive—and unique—responsibility. But it soon becomes clear the problems in Royalty Protection are just the beginning. A renegade organization has the security of the country—and the Crown—in its sights. The only question is which target is next in line…

This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series!
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down.
Can't wait to read more of these.
Recommend reading.

I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.

Three Tales for the Price of One.
Three separate stories are interwoven into this highly entertaining book. I haven’t read any of the previous William Warwick books but although this obviously ties in with them, it was so cleverly written that I didn’t feel at any time ‘at sea’. Highly recommended.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love the previous book in the series and I loved this one as well. It feels a bit surreal to read it in these times when the royal family is so much on the spotlight. But I enjoyed every second of it. I can only imagine the reality of being the security of a royal family member let alone one so famous as Diana was.
The author is well known for his ability to woven real facts with fiction and take you on a ride. The characters are so well drawn and feel like someone that I actually know and interact at times in real life. There’s a lot going on in here. Some predicted turns but many unexpected twists as well especially midway through the story.
What amazed me was Beth, Warwick’s wife. She plays a big part in the story.
It was interesting to just imagine them all in 1988 and the investigation process. I guess many of those tactics still applies nowadays.

Action packed, thrilling and exciting new story from a now favourite thrillers author.

🆓📖Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley

One of the DCI William Warwick series. Can be read individually - which I did having not read Jeffrey Archer books for many years. A very pleasant surprise.
Following Princess Diana who chooses to tread her own path which was both in advisable and extremely dangerous.
There is another storyline within the book of Miles Faulkner and Booth Watson giving an insight into prison hierarchy and corruption within the system.
It took me by surprise to read about Princess Diana at a particularly significant time for the Royal Family.
It was a great read, easy to follow. Despite taking many different directions. Well written and fast moving.

I did enjoy this book. Great story and characters. 4*.

The fifth in a series following DCI William Warwick, this novel follows two main plot lines. The potentially corrupt police unit protecting the Royal family and the increasingly wayward Princess Diana, and the continuing saga of Miles Faulkner, his corrupt barrister Booth Watson and his wonderfully inconsistent wife Christina. I have not read any Jeffrey Archer for awhile and I am now questioning why.

A thoroughly enjoyable novel with plenty of twists and turns, and wonderful interactions between the well drawn characters. Just what I would expect from the author. I’ll certainly be looking for more books in the series as I don’t think I will be disappointed.

The novel can be read as a standalone but I feel I may have got more out of it if I had read the previous books in the series. Many thanks to net galley, the publisher and author for the advanced readers copy of this novel in return for an honest review.

I haven’t read a book by this author for years but I thoroughly enjoyed this one &, although fifth in the William Warwick series, it can be read as a standalone.

It’s 1988 & London, along with the rest of the world, has fallen under the spell of Diana, Princess, of Wales.
The plot concerns doubts about the abilities of the Royal Protection Command & an investigation ensues lead by DCI Warwick. Alongside this runs a tale about a jailed criminal with an unhealthy addiction to fine art.

Fast paced & well written; this is a thrilling read with a tantalising conclusion. Recommended.

How strange it was to read a book centred firmly around the British Royal Family when they are in the headlines so much after the death of the Queen. This book, set in 1988, revolves mostly around Diana and her protection detail. There is something rotten in the state of Denmark, and Scotland Yard are tasked to investigate all things dodgy and corrupt within the Royal Protection Unit. Although expecting quite a tough assignment within the closed doors, they really didn't expect what follows...
Meanwhile we are still concerned with Miles Faulkner and Booth Watson. And then there's Beth, DCI William Warwick's wife who works at the Fitzmolean.
It's all interconnected and convoluted, especially if you haven't yet read the previous 4 books - but you have, haven't you? If not, I would suggest you do, not only for the ongoing development of the main characters, but also for the background to the series threads and returning characters from previous stories.
I've never read this author before this series. I did start listening to book one of The Clifton Chronicles but that was early in my foray into Audiobooks so it kind of fell by the wayside - mental note, dig it out and try again. But I have took to this series, and indeed the characters, like a duck to water and am having a great time with them and their shenanigans. He does come across like he has a great deal of fun whilst writing these books and that shines out from every page.
The story he chooses to centre this book around, Royal Protection, is both a cracking read and a bit of an eye opener. Not the dodgy dealing, I'm sure that'd pure fiction, but the wherewithal, procedures and whathaveyou. All very interesting and has piqued my interest to find out more.
And I love that William and Beth's children play a bit more of a role in the proceedings...
All in all, a cracking addition to an already well established series. I really can't wait to see what happens next time... My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

Great read, quite topical given the Queen's death. Story about the police, in particular about the Royal Protection squad and their role in watching over Diana, Princess of Wales, so obviously set back in the 1990's. Police financial corruption and dismissal of said officers. However, thankfully there are some very honest and upright officers on the force with high moral standards. Art fraud and Libyan terrorists are amongst the story line too. Clever how JA linked it all in. Entertaining read with twists and turns to keep one reading.

Another cracking addition to this magnificent series!

As the public fall in love with Diana, the Royal Protection Command has never been more important; it falls to Detective Chief Inspector William Warwick and his team to make sure they are up to the job. Working with an experienced undercover officer, they soon realise that they have more to worry about as there is an organisation with it's sights set on the security of the country - and the crown.

I have been a huge fan of Jeffrey Archer's books ever since first reading Kane and Abel many years ago; in fact, it may just be time to read it again! The character of William Warwick first appeared in his previous series, The Clifton Chronicles, as a character in a series of novels and, to my mind, it was a masterstroke to then move onto actually writing that very series. I often see this author being referred to as a 'master story-teller' and it is the perfect description. He has the ability to draw in his readers like no other; twists and turns keep the reader on their toes. The characters just come alive for me and each novel furthers the series while entertaining at the highest level. As always, an absolutely superb read which commands all five sparkling stars and my very highest recommendation!

My thanks to the publisher for my copy via NetGalley; this is - as always - my honest, original and unbiased review.

I was keen to read this book as the story was portrayed as being set in 1988 with the plot centring on Royal Protection Officers who were protecting Diana, Princess of Wales. In reality, a lot of the story is a follow on from the previous four books in the series as DCI William Warwick is still in pursuit of criminal art dealer Miles Faulkner and his equally criminal lawyer, Booth Watson QC. I found this further spinning out of the Faulkner storyline rather tedious and just wanted to get to the plot concerning the Royal Family. That was a minority of the book and mostly in the last section.

Archer's writing continues to rankle as he has endless dialogue of someone putting one over on another person with their smug facial expression being felt loud and clear by the reader. Archer's writing is prolific and impressive but I have decided that I've read enough of his twisty and convoluted tales and there are more enjoyable and satisfying books for me savour.

I was really exciting about reading this book however when I downloaded it I hadn’t realised it was part of a series which I’d say it’s definitely worth reading the previous books before starting this one as I think it would have helped me get into this book a bit more.

I also found as I was reading this book at many points I couldn’t keep up with it as there were so many different story lines and in the end I lost my way with it. I’d expected the book to me more focused around the description and along the lines of the protection of princess Diana but that was only a small part of it.

I may go back and read the previous 4 books in this series in the hope that I will understand more about the characters in this book and be able to get to grips better with the plot.

I would like to say thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for this review.

What a fantastic book! I’d heard of Jeffrey Archer but never had read any of books but now he’ll be one of my favourite authors

When reading something by Jeffrey Archer, politics aside, you know that you are going to have a goof read. This is the 5th book in the William Warwick series but the first one that I have read. It reads great as a standalone but I am not sure if it gives anything away regarding the previous books.
The book is a great thriller and you can tell that the author has used a lot of his own knowledge and that of many experts as when reading the book you do have to keep reminding yourself that this is fiction. The only thing that concerned me in the early stages that this seemed to be like a fictionalised version of Princess Diana's life and I was initially trying to figure out if the author was a fan of the Princess or if he wanted to dirty the water a little more by adding more gossip about her. As the story progresses it concentrates less on her activities and more on the role of the Royal Protection Command.
I will definitely be looking out for more from this series and would recommend it to anyone interested in Britain around the time that Thatcher was Prime Minister and that loves a good thriller.
The book is published on the 27th September in harback, e-book and audio book formats and will be released in paperback in May 2023.
Many thanks to Harper Collins, NetGalley and Jeffrey Archer for providing me with an advanced electronic copy of the book in return for a honest, unbiased review
