My thanks to Macmillan Children’s Books Two Hoots for a review copy of ‘The Worry Tiger’ written by Alexandra Page and illustrated by Stef Murphy.

Rory is fretting about tomorrow’s show-and-tell at school. As he falls asleep he finds himself in a dream jungle. There he meets a gentle tiger who tells him that she is his worry tiger. She guides him through the jungle suggesting ways for him to relax and deal with his anxieties.

I immediately fell in love with this little picture book. While it’s intended for children aged 3-6, I consider it a book that’s message will appeal to all ages.

Alexandra Page writes about mindfulness and calming techniques in a way that is simple and direct. Stef Murphy’s illustrations perfectly complemented Page’s words. Her images and use of colour throughout were outstanding.

I immediately placed a preorder for this book and am recommending it to my friends with children and grandchildren.

Following the release of The Fire Fox last year, Alexandra Page and Stef Murphy have teamed up again to bring us another beautiful picture book called The Worry Tiger.

Rory is feeling anxious. It's show-and-tell tomorrow at school and he has nothing to share with the class. But then he meets his very own worry tiger who takes him on a magical journey and encourages him to find his inner calm.

As with The Fire Fox, which deals very gently with grief, The Worry Tiger is extremely subtle in tone. With the focus firmly on the magical adventure, readers are encouraged to breathe and stretch and to enter a state of mindfulness without even realising it.

For me, there is a slight hint of the classic picture book, The Tiger That Came to Tea, in this story, but instead of the tiger invading the home of the child, the tiger takes the child out into the world. However, thanks to the stunning illustrations by Stef Murphy – who this time takes us on an adventure into a vibrant jungle rather than the arctic – I still felt that same sense of awe at the appearance of such a magnificent creature who is both wild and yet completely soothing at the same time. Surely, if a creature famous for its ferocity can enjoy being mindful, then readers can too!

To reinforce the gentle message of the story, the endpapers at the back of the book provide some exercises for mindfulness, reiterating the breathing and the stretching that Rory was taught in the jungle. Yet Alexandra Page's lyrical words and lulling rhyme are relaxing enough in themselves. Perfect for bedtime or for calming worried or hyped-up little ones, this is a truly magical combination of words and pictures.

A great soothing story which encourages using your senses to feel calm and relaxed even in a nerve wrecking situation for little ones. I wish this book was read to me as a child

This is a beautifully presented book, supporting children with strategies for coping with worry, all told through a story about a girl who starts to worry she has nothing for show and tell
The illustrations are lovely, I would definitely use this in school to support learning and understanding of emotions.

A strong success this, for it covers the issues and motives of the book perfectly well, without forgetting as so many books do about the entertainment it should offer the child visiting such pages. In its mindfulness lesson it covers a kid worried about having something for 'show and tell' at school the following day, and who discovers his very own worry tiger, able to get him stretching, breathing in slowly, pausing, creating and so on – all things redirecting his brain away from fretting towards something a bit more relaxing. It's a pretty book, too – and while my personal thoughts are mixed about the beast speaking in verse I think this is something of potentially great use.

This is a strikingly illustrated book teaching children about mindfulness and grounding techniques.

Reading the beautiful descriptions in this story is like a soothing sensory bath in itself! The illustrations are beautiful, we especially loved the firefly illustrations.

Children are encouraged to use their senses to ground themselves as they follow Rory on an adventure through the jungle with his very own worry tigger as his guide! She reminds him to hear like a tiger and see like a tiger, as well as take calming breaths to steady himself and face his worries!

We loved that there’s some mindfulness activities included that link to the story. An absolute wonderful book which children will take with them and hold in their hearts, drawing on its words fitting times of nervousness and worry.

This was a very beautiful book about feelings and emotions, with lovely illustrations.
In The Worry Tiger we follow Rory in the night. He has show and tell at school the next day and as he is really nervous and anxious about it he is unable to sleep. Suddenly he is visited by his 'worry tiger', who teaches him to use his senses, relax and be brave.
'The Worry Tiger' is a wonderful book to help children explore their feelings and develop ways to cope with them.

***Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this ARC on exchange for an honest review. This is definitely a book I would recommend to others and try to get into my local library***

Beautiful and brightly illustrated, this book is a perfect story for any child who is struggling with anxiety.

The book is really well written and will help any young child relate to why they might be worried about something - so is a perfect conversation starter too. The book would also work well in a classroom setting during work about feelings and emotions.

This is a beautiful book for young children and the illustrations are beautiful to which will also keep the children engaged with the lovely lion and bright colours. This story will help children relate to when they are worried and what they can do to keep them calm. The Strategy’s at the end of the book are very useful.

This is another great book about emotions and feelings for the little ones at home.

In The Worry Tiger we follow Rory in the night before he has to do something important at school and how that event is worrying him, making him unable to sleep.

Worry Tiger has the solution to his problem and to the problem of those who easily worry as well!
