This was an eerie book in places, it really had me spooked on occasions.

The toll House is told in two timelines and two perspectives. We have present day Kelda, she and her son Dylan have just moved into their first home together..a small idyllic toll house in the countryside. For Kelda this is a fresh start, but strange things start happening within the house but she's sure it's Dylan messing around...or is it?
The second point of view is from 1863, Joseph Walton is the the toll house toll keeper and his wife is expecting a baby but things don't go to plan...what happened in 1863 will change the toll house forever.

This was a cleverly crafted story. We had present day kelda and snippets from Joseph and what happened in 1863. I think a lot of readers will like this if you like the trope of the child being affected in the house and doing weird stuff. It has a little bit of a backstory to kelda and how she came to be a toll house and her relationships with men but the focus is definitely on the history and weird stuff.
The story gets darker and darker as the story progresses and goes from mystery to horror.

Perfectly serviceable gothic thriller, enjoyable as the nights draw in but there are better nooks out there. A great setting but the characters were a little too... gamkliar

A really good read. Each chapter something to scare or shock you and make you want to read on.
Really enjoyed the two stories and how the intermingled, past and present.
Definitely gave me the creeps, great read.

Absolute belter of a gothic novel for those dark winter nights. It is one of the creepiest, menacing and sinister stories I have read. Told in two timelines 1863 and the present day it tells the story of Kelda and her son Dylan who move to an old Toll house where all is not as it should be. Also the story of Joe and his wife Bella who is pregnant. At one stage I had to put it down as it was freaking me out. It's a perfect read for dark windy nights under a cosy duvet with the lighs on. Brilliant

A perfect ghostly story for these darker evenings now that spooky season is upon us. The Toll House tells the story of a young single mother and her son, settling into a new home, an old Toll House, and discovering that something isn't quite right about the place. The narrative is interspersed with a second narrative from the house's past, which slowly begins to explain the lingering presence. It's full of atmosphere and tension, and is really well paced.

I thought this was a very appropriate read in the run up to Halloween.

The author is very good at setting the scene and I definitely felt on edge when I was reading this in the wee small hours.

There were a couple of things that characters did that were questionable but this did not spoil my enjoyment of the book.

If you enjoy atmospheric ghostly going ons then you will love this.

Thank you to #NetGalley and LittleBrownBookGroup for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. #TheTollHouse

This was a brilliant, creepy read. The Toll House is a scary place to live and all the supernatural things that kept happening create a book filled with tension that you might need to put down a few times as it is so scary! I liked Kelda and Dylan and was hoping they'd make it through the evil that lives in the house and I also liked how it swapped between the past and present to give the reader the backstory of the house. Overall it is a chilling read and one that should not be read at night!

Oh, I do love those books that are perfect for October. You know the ones. The ones that match the darker nights, the ones to curl up in front of a blazing fire with a hot cup of tea by your side. The ones that make you pull the curtains to keep the outside from coming in. But perhaps, in this instance, you should be more concerned about what already lurks within. Some houses like to keep hold of their secrets, to retain the past and replay the bad things that happened there. This occurs when Kelda moves into the old Toll House with her son. Signs are not good right from the very first chapter of this book, and it will have you looking over your shoulder, wondering what that creak on the stair really was. No doubt just the cat. But no, here she is, sitting by your side! Yikes. Should I go and investigate?
It's creepy and unsettling, and if you're currently thinking of moving into an old house, it will undoubtedly have you checking out the history of the property before you sign on the dotted line.

From a reader's perspective, this book has pace and provides all the chills. It follows a fairly well-trodden path, but it doesn't matter because it's well done and a debut to be proud of.

From a writing perspective, I liked that everything was wrapped up satisfactorily. There was no ambiguity and no loose threads that leave you wondering. The duel timeline worked well and slowly revealed the secrets and truth of The Toll House.

For me, this is 5 star October read. I enjoyed it very much.

Well, what a debut!

This was a tense and creepy read! You know its good when you get a bit freaked out reading it in bed and switch to reading it in daylight!!

I loved the two timelines, it seemed to make it all the more exciting to find out what the hell was going on.

Brilliant book for these dark autumn stormy nights!

When Bella, the wife of the Toll House Keeper, tragically dies during childbirth along with her child, her heartbroken husband becomes convinced that the spirit of his wife lingers on.

A couple of hundred years later, in the present time, Kelda and her young son move into the Toll House to begin a new life but after a crack in the wall reveals an eerie death mask belonging to a previous owner, terrifying occurrences start happening in the house.

A gripping gothic ghost story with split timelines, The Toll House kept me on the edge of my seat and reading on well in the night - a true page-turner.

Oozing with tension and incredibly atmospheric, this novel is classic horror with uncomplicated prose and twists that arrive sparingly, making them all the more creepy.

I found the themes of obsession, love and jealousy explored remarkably well and truly related to Kelda's desire to do well by her family.

Reagon's ability to build the tension drove this novel forward and I could happily read more by this author for hours on end.

I did like this for the most part, just found it a little lacklustre for me. The writing was fine and the pacing was good but i didn't gel with it entirely so found it hard to get through. The switching between the time periods was done well and i liked the tonal differences between the times. One area the book didn't work for me was when the characters were a little 2-d and they felt underwritten and not explored enough. I feel like if a couple of them had been removed this may not have been an issue.

I'm a fan of horror. The jumps, the fear and the need to sleep with light....this book will scare you, but you'll be able to sleep with the lights off.....mostly.
Told from different time periods and perspectives this classic haunted house tale will keep you reading through the night.
Although i enjoy the book i found Kelda to be a little weak for a leading lady, but the other characters and story kept me going.

Grab this book for a bedtime read, you decide if you can turn the lights off afterwards.

Very scary, dark, horrorific. A book that kept me turning pages but was also able to make me feel Kelda's feelings of dread and fear.
A mix of horror, historical fiction that works on a dual timeline giving us a fresh version of the haunted house trope.
You cannot help feeling and rooting for Kelda and hope that everything will work.
Good storytelling, great atmosphere, interesting characters.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Kelda and her son Dylan are making a new start in a new town in a new house.

The Toll House is just the right size for their little family. It's not long before weird things start to happen... Things that can't exactly be explained by logic. White pebbles appearing everywhere and the smell of lavender coming from no where. We get back story mixed in with current events a perfect balance keeping the reader guessing.

A hauntingly good book! I really enjoyed the morbid history and the suspense of the present day.

Highly recommended!

This is a story about a woman who moves to an old toll house with her young son. The house has a dark history, told over a separate timeline, and spooky stuff ensues in the present day. Not the most original story and it is really more of a family/relationship drama than a full on haunted house story. The book didn't quite hit the mark for me but it is still an entertaining read for Halloween season and a very good choice for fans of domestic dramas with a supernatural edge. 3.5 stars

Set in the present day we hear Kelda's story as she starts a new job in a new town, moving into her first home away from her mum with 6 year old Dylan. It becomes clear from the outset that there is something wrong with her new home, The Toll House, a place that terrifies her son and leaves her feeling disturbed.
At the same time we hear a separate story - from 1864 - of Bella, a wife adored by her husband, who dies, sending him into a spiral of madness and from there to the murder of another pregnant woman.
There are elements of the story of Kelda's life which were a little annoying - she leaves work early, she doesn't keep to her lunch break, doesn't do the work she's supposed to be doing whilst at work because she's distracted but it's still her boss who is made out to be the problem here. In the earlier parts of the book I felt it wasn't quite as fast-moving as I'd have perhaps liked. Overall though I thought this an excellent story with a slightly surprising ending and worth a read (the little niggles made me give this book a 4* but it was probably nearer a 4 1/2*)

Wish I had read this book later in the year. It demands to be read by a crackling log fire in an old house while you are wrapped up in a cosy blanket, in the dark (with a torch). A great gothic read, I loved it.

The Toll House is a creepy gothic tale - a perfect read for colder - darker - nights. With a duel timeline, it tells the story of Bella and her husband, Joseph - the toll keeper, in the 1800. The present day story of Kelda and her son Dylan, who have just bought, and moved into the toll house - Bella and Joseph's previous home. Reagon spins an incredibly convincing and creepy tale that'll have you reaching for the light switch, and looking behind yourself as you walk upstairs... wondering what that creak was.

Loved loved this one!! Gripping and exciting and as always a fab read and can't wait to see what this author does next :)

Definitely creepy in parts but not the ghostly chiller I'd expected. Of course there were the usual amounts of implausibility and red herrings but it kept my attention and I enjoyed it.
