I've been a fan of Cara Hunter's books from the beginning and have read them all in order of publication, so was excited when Hope to Die came up on Netgalley!

Police are called to a remote farmhouse when someone hears a gunshot. Someone is dead. But who is it? And did the occupiers of the house know them? DI Fawley has a lot of investigating to do when this murder links to an old crime.

Number six in the series really didn't disappoint. In my opinion this is BY FAR the best of the DI Fawley books to date. The twists, the turns, you're on the edge of your seat because you're not quite sure who the killer is, and then the end twist was kind of expected but not quite in the way it played out.
I loved the character list at the beginning, to refresh the reader's memory; it's very helpful when you're coming back to a series. The mixed media (newspaper articles, police interviews, texts) as always keeps things interesting.
The one thing I found odd/very interesting was the note at the end about this story being based on a true crime. It's not made me go and look into that crime but it did make me wonder if that's why this particular book was more compelling than the others. Not sure, but still a fan and will still continue to read the next in the series!

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest, independent review.

On an isolated farm on the outskirts of Oxford, a body lies on the kitchen floor, having been shot at point-blank range. It looks like a burglary gone wrong, but DI Adam Fawley knows there is something more to this than meets the eye.

When they dig deeper, Fawley and his team discover a connection to a high-profile case from years ago and start uncovering skeletons in the closet.

Once again, I absolutely loved the latest instalment in the Adam Fawley series. It is always like catching up with old friends you do not speak to much. The second I open the pages and see the character profiles (very helpful, btw!), I know it will be easy to catch up with the gang again.

I love the characters, old and new, but also love how Hunter has let these develop as the series progress: it's not all about Adam, the others have their chance to shine through, while others take a back seat.

If you enjoy police procedurals, this is the book series for you. I love the inclusion of news articles, interview transcripts and emails, and always feel like I am part of the team, helping to solve the case.

The plot is believable and gripping. It was not an easy case to solve, but Hunter produced a real page-turner, with lots of twists and turns.

Addictive read - highly recommend!

Another great instalment from Cara Hunter.
I must admit I found this one flowed more clumsily for me, a few too many characters that I had to keep searching for, but it all came together in the end.
Looking forward to the next DCI Fawley story.

My thanks to Penguin U.K. Viking for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Hope to Die’ by Cara Hunter.

This is Book 6 in Hunter’s series of Oxford based police procedurals featuring Detective Inspector Adam Fawley.

Hunter again opened the book with a short ‘previously on the Fawley files’ to serve as an introduction to the main characters for new readers or as a refresher for those, like myself, returning to the series. It was certainly appreciated.

This was a corker! Just a few plot details in order to avoid spoilers.

It opens on the evening of the 21st October 2018 with a 999 call. The police arrives at an isolated property outside of Oxford to find a body in the kitchen shot at point blank range.

While the incident initially seems to be a burglary gone wrong, DI Adam Fawley suspects there is something more going on. Then a shocking connection emerges to a high profile case from years ago….

Aside from the conventional narrative, Hunter livens things up by incorporating news reports, transcripts of interviews and the like.

This was an excellent and completely gripping crime thriller with plenty of twists and turns. Indeed, I have found the entire series amazingly good.

Highly recommended.

I will begin by saying, firstly, this is not my usual choice of genre. Secondly, I haven’t read any of Cara Hunter’s other books…but you’ll be happy to know I’m converted and will 100% be picking up more of them!

I usually struggle with crime books because I find them slightly repetitive and don’t see anything new, however Hunter’s style is incredible. As she says in the Acknowledgments section, she bases her stories (loosely May I add) off of true crime stories in the media and that just makes so much sense!

I loved the mixed media throughout, from letters to interview transcripts and many more. I’m loving that more books are doing this as it definitely adds a layer of realism to the story. I also thought it read as if you were watching a literal documentary on the police solving a case! The addition of the staffs personal lives? Amazing, makes them more human than in other crime novels I’ve read previously! Furthermore, Hunter really built the tension so well by not including chapters (believe me it makes a difference), it truly felt like a non-stop investigation and if it wasn’t for work I wouldn’t have put it down.

Overall, I have nothing but praise for this. Thank you to Penguin for gifting me a copy both physically and on NetGalley and having me on their tour (via my instagram).

Very good police procedural novel

The case which DI Fairley and his team investigate is the killing of an intruder at a remote dwelling which develops into a far more complex tale of murdered babies and a devious protagonist who manipulates all those around her. (Trying not to give too much away here!) The plot develops nicely and at a reasonable pace and the characters are well developed and credible. I felt that the end was drawn out a bit but otherwise it makes for a very good detective novel and comes highly recommended. I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Another great story in the DI Adam Fawley series. They just get better with each book. Because this is book 6 in the series the different storylines within his team are the richer for it.
What an interesting read that has so many twists and turns which you find gripping but what makes it more so is that it is based on a true story.
I am so looking forward to the next book in the series
Last but not least best wishes to Chloe Sargent

This was the first time I've read a book by Cara Hunter but I can say it won't be the last as I am now going back to book 1 of this series so I can get to know more of DI Fawley. If anything, I just found it to bit a bit of a slow burner, but thoroughly enjoyable, with a great storyline and well constructed characters.
Thanks for the opportunity to read this ARC.

This is only the second book in the DI Fawley series that I have read. The book is well plotted and loosely based on a true story. Fawley and his team investigate the shooting of a young man at a rural Manor house in Oxfordshire and soon find links to an earlier crime involving the murder of a newborn baby, The story is believable but at times I found it to be a little on the slow side. That being said it is a good addition to the British crime genre.

Another great book by Cara Hunter. I like her writing style., the characters are realistic and their interaction is true to life. Sometimes a joke which lightens up the investigation. As a reader, you are given insight into the evidence and thinking of the detectives as it arises. The story has twists and turns and in all encompasses a time scale of 20 years .
At the beginning of the book, there is a list of the main police detectives which I found helpful.
Descriptions of the events are good, evidence comes from different sources, indicated by different fonts. You get the feeling that you too are involved in the puzzle and solving the crime.
Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review

When a body is found in a farmhouse in a gruesome state, DI Adam Fawley is one of the first on the scene. The murder leads Fawley to a convoluted investigation from the past, and a family torn apart by a devastating crime involving the disappearance of a child.
Can Fawley piece together the facts of history with the clues in the present? Sometimes the truth is the hardest answer to face up to…

This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series!
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down.
Can't wait to read more of these.
Recommend reading.

I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary

The latest instalment in the DI Fawley series did not disappoint. He back with his wife and a gorgeous daughter in tow.
As always this book had me gripped from the start and I still loved the interview and news report snippets.
I urge anyone who loves a crime related book to read this series as I don’t think you’ll regret it.

Number six in the DI Adam Fawley series and another great read
Interesting twisty plot with a host of amoral characters that you really can’t find any sympathy for.
The subplot bubbles along nicely too
A lovely dedication at the end of the book makes you realise that one person’s fiction is another’s reality
Heartfelt best wishes to the real life Chloe Sargent
I’m looking forward to the next encounter with DI Fawley and co.

What appears to be a burglary gone wrong and the victims claiming to have shot the offender in self defence very quickly begins to be questioned by DI Fawley. Things just don't add up. Why was it left to a member of the public to call the police, did the Swanns have something to hide? DI Fawley soon begins the slow unravelling of the truth resulting in yet another page turned from Cara Hunter, adding to an already fabulous series of books.

I’ve enjoyed others in the series so was looking forward to reading this one. I found though it didn’t grab me as much as the others. It started off well but then seemed to become quite long drawn out and I skim read a lot of the last half of the book. Still an interesting story line though.

I really am a bit disappointed by this one. I have took a while to read it because I just struggled with it and couldn’t get into it. I carried on regardless and found it a bit mediocre at the end. But I will carry on reading the DI Cawley series. #HopetoDie #NetGalley.

A great modern based thriller. It was not one that gave much away too soon.all the way through the titbits of information we’re so well placed and the pace of the story was perfect. Just when o thought that I had it all sorted out I discovered that I did not. It was a lovely start to the book to describe all the main characters that set the scene for anyone reading this as the first one in the series and the descriptions made it an excellent stand alone book. It was a very clever placement of police interviews and procedures, trial notes and the Netflix parts which all added to the intrigue of the book. The characters were all well described and the notes at the end saying how it was based upon a true Australian incident made it extra special.

This is the sixth book in the 'DI Adam Fawley' series by Cara Hunter set in and around Oxford. I have now read all of the instalments except book two - In The Dark - which I hope to get around to soon. I think there is some benefit in reading at least one of the other books first for character development and to maximise the enjoyment of the story, however, each of the stories has its uniqueness. The author helpfully provides a little background of the central characters at the start of the book, a great touch which shows thoughtfulness to her audience.

Hope to Die was a compulsive read with plenty of turns and shocking discoveries. The story followed the format of a dual, past and present timeline as it developed through changing scenes, told from the points of view of Adam and various others, who each had their dilemmas and difficulties to bear, though Adam is in a better place now. Everything was all so well executed by Cara Hunter and this kept me reading enthusiastically.

Cara Hunter's writing style continues to be very natural, realistic and absorbing. Similar to previous instalments, the author has effectively peppered the tale with the inclusion of documents and materials, for example, police interview details, emails and transcripts that really embellish and enhance the overall impact of the book. With ups and downs in pacing the plot was cleverly constructed and it was impossible to predict what was coming next, making Hope to Die all the more compelling right until the satisfying ending. Cara Hunter's characterisation was tremendous and certainly not neglected in favour of the plot or anything else. I love this team of characters and need to read more in the series, eager for book seven.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Penguin Books (UK) via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
