Hope to Die by Cara Hunter.
Book 6 of the DI Adam Fawley series.
A burglary gone wrong or is it? DI Adam Fawley suspects there's something more to it. He's determined to find out.
I really enjoyed this book. I love this series. I loved the newspaper clippings and text bubbles. Omg bring on the next book quickly cara. What an ending. Cliffhanger. 5*.

I love this series and this latest addition did not disappoint. The inclusion of the ‘who’s who’ at the beginning is a fantastic idea and I’m glad to see it again. I note that the author was inspired by an actual criminal case and this book definitely had a ‘true crime’ feel to it. No doubt that feeling was added to by the extracts from the ‘Netflix’ series dotted through the book. DI Fawley is a great character and I hope there’s plenty more to come from him and his team.

Another fab episode from the very talented Cara Hunter in her DI Adam Fawley series.

In a completely baffling mystery the Oxfordshire police have to use all of their resources to work out why an elderly couple have a dead body in their kitchen, one who neither admit to knowing. This story is right up their with the best of the genre's ingeniously plotted storylines which is combined with a deeply satisfying conclusion.

I highly rate this series which really embraces the contemporary whilst losing none of the police procedural's appeal in the process. This story has a Netflix documentary running alongside the different viewpoints of the team investigating the case which adds a nice touch that we can all relate to.

I'm already looking forward to my next trip to Oxford.

DI Adam Fawley is back for a very welcome sixth time. The Oxford based police officer is called to a very remote farmhouse after a passerby reported hearing a gunshot. The elderly residents, Richard and Margaret Swann, claim to have disturbed an intruder who Richard admits to shooting in self defence. However, as evidence emerges it seems that this is highly improbable. Why is Richard lying?

A great, twisty plot with astutely created characters and an atmosphere thick with tension make for a brilliant read.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Called out to an isolated farm in the middle of the night, Adam Fawley’s latest case involves an elderly couple and a dead body. Informed by the couple that, when faced with a burglar armed with a knife, he was shot, something just doesn’t feel right to the Detective Inspector and before long he and his team are involved in investigating a previous crime – and the surprises just keep on coming.

I’ve loved this series from the very beginning, but something about this one just didn’t sit well with me. I’m not sure what it was, but it took a while for me to settle with this sixth novel. The reports of the previous crime were in tiny print and it was irksome to continually have to alter the font size continually just as I was getting into the story. There is no doubt this is an awesome crime thriller, full of twists and turns galore and a riveting read but somehow it just didn’t feel the same as the rest of the series. Still, one I’m happy to recommend and give 4.5*.

My thanks to the publisher for my copy via NetGalley; this is – as always – my honest, original and unbiased review.

From the start of this series we have observed DI Adam Fawley's life in various stages, sometimes sad, sometimes crazily mixed up, occasionally misdirected, but always absorbing, so it's a real pleasure in Hope to Die to see him enter a more settled period in his life. However, that doesn't mean that his professional life is any less exciting, far from it as Hope to Die hits the ground running with a gruesome discovery in an isolated farmhouse. The elderly couple who live at Gantry Manor are naturally bewildered by what appears to be a burglary gone wrong at their rural hideaway but there's something about Mr and Mrs Swann which just doesn't quite add up. As always, Fawley and his team are soon on the case and are determined to leave no stone unturned and no clue uninvestigated but even these hardened detectives are unprepared for what they are about to discover about the couple at Gantry Manor.

I raced through Hope to Die at top speed, not because it's light on content, far from it, it's just that once started it's very easy to become so immersed that you don't notice time passing. I love the speed of the story, the way it enfolds you, quickens your imagination and all credit to this talented writer for keeping everything so realistic, from police interviews, emails, news and Netflix documentary transcripts it reads like a true crime broadcast. There are twists and turns aplenty, lots of emotional content, and a family drama which reveals its secrets ever so slowly but when all is revealed it makes you gasp out loud.

Clever , sophisticated, and brilliant, long may DI Adam Fawley and his team reign supreme. I'm already looking forward to the seventh in the series, and beyond, as this creative author has the unique ability to keep the stories fresh and true, and cunningly addictive.

Another case for Detective Adam Fawley and his team.
When a member of the public calls to report a gun shot at a house in the middle of nowhere, late at night, Adam and his team find what looks like a burglary gone wrong, but upon investigating closer it soon becomes clear that this couple in their seventies have a lot to hide and their story isn't quite adding up.
I always enjoy catching up with Adam and Co. I've read all of the books in the series and this one was absolutely brilliant. Such an interesting storyline with greats twists and clever detective work. Would highly recommend this and all other Cara Hunter books.

Amazing read! I loved the characters, loved the storyline and loved the added inserts into the narrative. I stayed up late into the night to finish this one and can’t wait for the next in the series!

DI Adam Fawley and his team are back in book six of the series.
When the team are asked to investigate a fatal shooting at a remote location not everything is what it seems.

Richard Swann and elderly man said he shot the burglar as he was afraid for his and his wife lives.
But this case just gets more twisted as the team investigate. It doesn't help matters that the young man was shot in the face and had absolutely on ID on him.

As the case progresses not everyone is telling the truth about who there are and the dead man.
Also what has an old case about a young woman in prison for murdering her newborn baby have to do the the Swanns?

Cara Hunter has a brilliant way of writing such mesmerising stories and have such a fantastic set of characters.

Cara Hunter is an auto-buy for me and one of my favourite series.

I absolutely love the DI Fawley series and the whole team that support the plot. #HopeToDie might be my favourite book in the series so far with its twists and turns. I loved the way Cara Hunter included the excerpts from the Netflix documentary on an old case - it fitted the story perfectly.

A man shot in the head halts quick identification. A woman in prison for the murder of her newborn son. Can these be linked?
Tension from the start of this fast paced novel. DC Adam Fawley is on the case but it will not be an easy investigation.
Loved this book with it’s twists and turns, truth and lies. Enjoy the ride.

This author never disappoints and serves up another fantastic instalment in the DI Adam Fawley series. At times I was confused as the crime committed is so intricate however, all becomes clear and kept me gripped. I highly recommend this book.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review

This is book 6 in the series and I think it's the best one yet! It had a unique storyline that kept me gripped and I found it easy to follow. All the characters are so relatable and I definitely recommend you read the whole series in order to benefit the most from the books. Look forward to the next one.

This is the best Cara Hunter novel I read so far: an excellent police procedural that kept me turning pages and being surprised by all the twists till the final part.
I was glad to catch up with the characters and was fascinated by the possible culprits. Camilla, the chameleon girl, is the epitome of the unreliable narrator. A woman who prefer to spend her life in prison rather than saying what happened to her child. Her mother, a chilly woman obsessed by the social standing and the reputation.
There's not a lot of likeable or "good people", there's plenty of secrets and rage.
I liked how the author used different media (mail, newspapers, calls, tv program) to make us understand what is happening.
A gripping and excellent story that I strongly recommend.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

I’m an avid mystery reader, so I was super excited to be on the blog tour of Hope to Die by Cara Hunter. This has been a very complex story with lots of twists and turns.

✨Here’s what I liked:

✨The Swans were a very weird-acting couple.
✨I loved the who done it? and who is dead? mystery.
✨The story gets better and better and there are lots of visual aids and clues, which made this a very interactive read.
✨Based on real life events - I won’t mention which one, as I don’t want to give any spoilers, but it was definitely shocking to know that something similar has happened.

💫Nothing that I didn’t enjoy about this one.

This is the sixth book in Fawley series, but can be easily read as a standalone.

Wow! Are we really at book six in this, one of my favourite series? And with absolutely no signs of flagging at all.
So... we start with an elderly couple having shot dead a burglar in, what the man claims, was self-defence. On the face of things, this stacks up. Until little things in their story, particularly the timeline, fail to stack up and DI Adam Fawley and his team start to investigate.
It appears that the couple have a past. Well a past that is provided by their daughter Camilla who is currently serving life at Her Majesty's Pleasure... A past that they have tried very hard to erase. Except now it has come back to bite them in the face...
An so begins a crackingly plotted, interconnected, tale of two timelines. One following the investigation in the present, the other going back to Camilla's past and the events that shaped what is happening in the now. It's fast paced and contains everything I love about this author's use of information delivery. Using transcripts, Wiki entries, media reports, social media and the like. A very neat and effective way of bringing the reader up to speed. Meaning that the story gets on with itself very nicely indeed and, well, for me anyway, the book practically reads itself to you!
Characters were well crafted and all played their parts well, both series cast and episode extras. It was lovely to reconnect with Fawley and his team. Plotting was tight and well executed and there was no superfluous waffle or padding. The ending when it came both shocked and delighted, and wholly satisfied. In fact the only bad thing about the book was finishing it and having to say goodbye to them until the next time. Hopefully we'll reconnect soon for more of the same.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

Cara Hunter’s DI Adam Fawley series is fast becoming one of my favourite series. Set in Oxford, with it’s now signature mix of narrative with police reports, social media comments, emails, online news and podcasts, the novels perfectly blend the ups and downs in the lives of Adam and his team with delivering intriguing crimes and mysteries.

In this sixth novel in the series, police are called out to a remote house in response to the report of a gunshot, heard by a man out photographing the stars. When they arrive, they find an elderly couple, Richard and Peggy Swann, with the body of a young man in their kitchen. The dead man, his face been destroyed by a blast from a shotgun, is holding a knife in his hand and the Swanns claim they woke to him breaking in and shot him in self-defence. However, they not only failed to call the police but some of the evidence also doesn’t add up to this being an attempted burglary for Adam.

Looking into the Swanns background, Adam later discovers that they are not the bland, innocuous couple they claim to be. They changed their name and moved to Oxford seventeen years ago after their daughter Camilla was convicted on circumstantial evidence of killing her baby. Her baby’s body was never found but, after keeping her pregnancy secret from her family and friends, he simply disappeared the day Camilla left hospital with him and her explanations of what happened to him were vague and inconsistent.

It’s good to see that Fawley is in a much better place than in the previous book, where he was being framed for a shocking crime. He’s enjoying his new baby daughter Lily with his wife Alex and his career is looking up. He has a dependable team who work hard to identify the mystery ‘burglar’ and his link to the Swanns. New members DC Hansen and DC Chloe Sargent are talented and I look forward to seeing more of them. However, DC Bradley Carter currently filling in for the missing DC Somer is surely heading for a fall after his underhand tactics at getting noticed by the boss. Hunter’s excellent outline of the characters at the start of the book is a wonderful memory refresher for fans of the books and would also be helpful to those new to the series.

In the acknowledgements, Hunter notes that Camilla’s history of multiple unplanned and secret pregnancies, resulting in two babies given up for adoption in addition to the missing baby, is based on the case of Australian Keli Lane. It’s truly a case of fact being stranger than fiction and worth looking up the reports or podcast made about it after finishing the novel.

Hunter’s imagining of what happened to Camilla’s baby results in a fast paced, intricate plot, filled with suspense and some great twists. It really is an intriguing case. Fawley finds himself interviewing Camilla in prison and she truly is just as slippery and unhelpful as reported in her original interviews. A brilliant read, recommended for all fans of crime fiction.
