Oh Lia. You’ve done it again.
Wonderful characters
INCREDIBLE dialogue
Well balanced
Swoon worthy
Brilliant pacing
I just loved this book. As I expected I would! Lia has such a craft for writing people who steal your heart completely. The dialogue makes me fall in love with her books even more. It’s so funny and rich and real and emotional. The story itself is well thought through with tough topics balanced and presented delicately. It’s messy in the best way, as people are, and the story is complex enough to have many layers and get the cogs whirring without being overly complicated. I honestly totally fell for this book. I’m just mad I read it so quick!

I get so excited when a new Lia Louis book is published - and The Key to My Heart does not disappoint! Natalie is struggling to move on following the death of her husband two and a half years ago. She is drifting through life and somewhere along the way has lost herself. She was a vibrant, fun loving woman, who loves her friends, music and the little cottage that she bought with her husband, but that side of her has gone, lost beneath her grief. But when someone starts leaving sheet music in the piano stool of the busy London train station, that seem to have been specially chosen for her, she starts to 'feel' again.
Apart from Natalie, there is a wonderful supporting cast. Shauna, the warm and friendly woman from the coffee shop; Lucy, Priya and Roxanne her friends; Edie her best friend who betrayed her; Stand In Tom from the Mexican restaurant and Notebook Joe from the coffee shop. All believable and well written characters.
Lia Louis knows how to write emotional, feel good books that aren't afraid to tackle difficult subjects such as grief. But this book is not just about grief. It is full of hope, love, music, friendship and the chance to love again while still loving the person you have lost. It's always a good idea to have a free diary when you pick up a Lia Louis novel as they are difficult to put down as you become absorbed in the characters, cheering them on from the side lines. One of my very favourite authors. Highly recommended.

This was a fresh and beautiful read about grief and moving on featuring bereaved Natalie who struggles with her well meaning friends who simply want her to be happy again whereas she’s still not ready to consider her future without her husband. This was really sympathetically told from Natalie’s point of view and whilst the element of her finding music is a great little storyline there’s a whole lot more to this character read which remains very uplifting in spite of the predominant theme of grief. There’s a wonderful mix of character in this, several of whom have their own issues to content with which all adds to this delightful story. 9/10
