I found this book to be overall more so a work of historical fiction than of historical mystery. With that said - I found this book enlightening due to it's illustration of various eras/time periods in early England. And with such information, this book flowed - it demonstrated that good can come of negative situations and people not of noble birth at that time (at least in this piece of fiction) can advance their/their family's position in the political system of that time.

As to the specifics of the story - the most shocking parts were how Walshingham got his position in society and how the book ends.

Despite it all, the book wasn't a bad read. The book just wasn't what I was expecting.

A rollicking & truculent new chapter in English Medieval history set around the impetuous heirs of The Conqueror.
An adrenaline-fueled tale of sibling rivalries, political shenanigans and treason set amidst
a very colorful fictional tapestry and blessed with a large & exquisite cast of marvellous characters.
An rambunctious story that deserves to be enjoyed without any moderation whatsoever

Many thanks to Netgalley and Sapere Books for this terrific ARC

David Field writes compelling and entertaining historical mysteries. This is another one that I thorouhgly enjoyed.
The mystery is solid, the characters fleshed out, the historical background vivid.

I really enjoyed this book, well written with a rivetting storylne and well developed characters. I loved how it mixed fiction and fact with real historical figures and bridged the gaps in history to make a plausible and enjoyable storyline. A great read.

This was a highly enjoyable read! I loved some of the witty dialogues, I loved Wilfrid's relationship with Joan, his wife!
What I also greatly enjoyed is the way the author used what was known about these far gone times, and created a plausible story with unknown facts, such as King Harold' s widow and child, or more importantly for this novel, about what really happened to King William II when he was killed in the forest.
I intend to read the whole series! (This novel is the second of the series)
I received a digital ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The second book in what I understand will be a 7 book series. Again this story is so great that I read it in one day. I truly love the way this author writes. You become so engaged in the story that you feel that you are actually part of it. A great balance of dialogue and narrative, with just the perfect amount of details. This is how I wish all historical fiction books were written. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and publishers for an e-arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
