A doctor, a medical professional works and contributes so much towards the society. What does a doctor face when he is vested with medical duties of a prison? This is where this book comes up. Original, subtle and powerful, it kept wrapped up in its pages.
This book is beautiful!

A very interesting book about a very interesting job, Dr Yousaf comes across well as a decent person trying to do important work in a rough situation and with some very shady characters, and I enjoyed the book.

This is the second book I have read regarding a prison doctor and still feeling enlightened. It highlights the struggles and challenges that face all staff in the prison service but especially the issues facing healthcare professionals. An honest and thought provoking account of trying your best and the support from your colleagues is paramount.

I have such a love for any book that provides the rare insight into the prison system so I was super excited when I spotted this on Netgalley. Fascinating, heart-rendering, and completely eye-opening, I thought this was such a brilliantly written account of Dr Yousaf's experience of being a prison GP (or Dr Y as he's known).ย

The plot was the perfect mix of facts and stories, featuring the huge variety of situations he deals with daily - from general ailments to drug addiction and suicides. Dr Y takes the time to explain medical and prison terms that may not be common knowledge and describes the prison well for anyone who may not have read much about the system. There is, of course, such impossible challenges for the prison staff to deal with, particularly staff shortages, and these were addressed factually in an impartial and unprejudiced manner, with the importance of treating the patients in prison the same as any other patients would be,ย at the forefront.ย

I think my favourite thing about this book was the incredible kindness that comes across in Dr Y's writing: he appears as such a genuine person.ย  The tone with which he writes feels patient, and his positivity in such a brutal system, as well as his witty, dry humour shone through the pages, and made this a hugely enjoyable read. I loved the emphasis placed on the importance of your colleagues in the healthcare service: I can confirm I would not have survived the last three years in ambulance control without my green family! The epilogue was also incredible and gave me goosebumps!ย

My thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishers for a copy of โ€œ Stitched Upโ€ for an honest review.

Iโ€™m drawn to books that give an insight into the lives of other peopleโ€™s professions .
On the whole I enjoyed reading this, and found it very interesting.
It sounds a hell of a job, but Dr Yousaf comes across as a decent man , who does his best to help some, at times very frightening and dangerous inmates, with limited resources.
A thought provoking book

I am always intrigued by both prisons and health care so I was excited to get into this one. Dr Shahed Yousaf sounds like an incredible man and the kind of person I would want to be my doctor. His compassion and empathy were lovely to read. This book is a great resource for people who believe that if youโ€™re in prison you deserve to be treated less than. They are still human and the justice system isnโ€™t always fair. It was also an insightful yet extremely depressing look into how underfunded the prison system is and how much pressure the health care teams are under. I would have liked to have seen more actual cases though. I did also find there was a lot of repetition throughout the book. It was still an interesting read.

This was a thoughtful insight into healthcare in prisons. Dr Y's frustration and anger with the system is given a human face by outlining some of the patients who he meets; some of whose needs he can meet but more often than not is unable to help them in any meaningful way. His emphasis on teamwork and camaraderie was also well placed.
Having worked in a hospital close to a category A prison, I became quite used to having closely guarded prisoners as patients, and it is interesting to understand more fully the work involved prior to their admission.
I did feel at times that the author's style made me feel I was reading a series of short stories rather than a complete book but thought provoking none the less
Thank you to netgalley and Random House for an advance copy of this book

Is it the wrong thing to say I enjoyed this book, given this subject matter? Perhaps. So Iโ€™ll say this instead - I was gripped by the this book and couldnโ€™t turn the pages fast enough. I requested the book because I was intrigued to have a rare insight into an unusual job but reading it, I got so much more. The stories of the patients Dr. Yousaf treats are shocking and creepy at times but heartwarming at other points too. I loved the accounts of the found family he found in his colleagues as well as those of his own family. Itโ€™s definitely worth a read and I would recommend it to readers who enjoy true crime as well as those who enjoy biographies.

Thanks to Dr. Yousaf, his publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to review an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you for letting me pre read this book.

I really enjoyed this, itโ€™s not usually a genre I would go for, Iโ€™m usually reading crime fiction but I requested this book for a change,

The book is well written, and any medical terms used are thoroughly explained. It was a great insight as to the life of a prison doctor, a real eye opener! Dr Y covers everything just as he saw it happen, with stories about individuals told with respect and without judgment. Dr Y has a really lovely nature which comes across warmly in the book as we learn more about him, even as he shares his own personal experiences and struggles, he writes with positivity and kindness. He seems as though he genuinely just wants to help people.

Would recommend a read it was very good!

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

This is a non fiction story of a doctor who works in a prison setting.

He describes his job and some of the patients he treats, with wide ranging issues such as drug addiction, alcoholism, mental health crises, and general illnesses.

This was quite an eye opening book as to what happens in a prison, and how difficult it is for medical staff, especially with the underfunding to the prison service. It was well written, and I read it relatively quickly. Would highly recommend to anyone who is a fan of non fiction stories like this.

I have read a lot of books in the medical genre due to being an intensive care nurse. The genre still interests me despite doing it for my professional job most days. This was a good, well-rounded and researched book for the genre, the author has clearly put a lot of time into it which is obvious and the book reads very well.

This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.

me personally this book should be fleshed out a bit more. It comes off in a way that you don't actually like the main character and then you have to fight against that to listen to his stories. I would focus more on his(authors) development before we enter this hostile environment. I love true crime and stories like this really live or die based on how we perceive the doctor.

I can see how this has come about; let's face it, the market for doctors or health care professionals sharing their experiences in their roles has definitely taken off since Adam Kay bravely bared all. In fact, it has extended far beyond hospital practice and instead has reached as far as things like forensic pathology. In this case, Dr Yousaf takes us through his journey as a GP in the prison service.

It may well be a bit of a cash cow now - using medical careers as a means to become published - but actually I think there is a place for it. Stitched Up has a lot to offer - namely an insight into how the prison service actually works, relative to healthcare, but it most importantly offers unique perspective (and often controversial perspective) on the importance of treating prisoners the same as we would treat other patients. There's definitely a lot to be said for this - and probably just as much being said against it, but I think that's where this book absolutely fits.

The trouble is that where Adam Kay's obs and gynae spin on things was really fun and filled with equal parts humour and heart, Dr Yousaf, whilst absolutely likeable and clearly an important voice in his field, was a little bit dry. I appreciated the message he wanted to share, and it was eye opening, but the stories weren't as captivating or relatable I think for as many readers.

Nevertheless, certainly worth a read and absolutely worthy of joining the genre.

An interesting insight into being a prison gp, however I found it to be slightly lacking in talking about cases and more towards how poor the health system in prisons is. I would have loved to hear less about that and more about his patients personally. Still very eye opening and some of the stories within were shocking! Stay out of prison kids!

Dr Y takes us through his time as a prison doctor in a failing system. Failing the staff and patients in offender care.
There is a number of medical memoirs based on prison care and for me they just fall a little flat. They keep me interested enough but they do hilight a failure in the system.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

Wow this a brutally honest look at the life of a prison doctor and what goes on behind bars. This book is shocking and also really sad to see how life is behind the locked doors.

Iโ€™m sorry to say I abandoned this book half way through. The style of writing just did not grab me. Yes the book does show the inadequacy of healthcare in the prison population. But on the flip side they are in prison for a reason. And as long as a prisoner has there essential needs meet is that not enough. Here is where we will all have our heated debates.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to see an arc

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
At first I thought it was going to be another in this non-fiction type where the author spends our reading time telling us about statistics and successive government's failures but I stuck with it and I am so glad I did. What a gentle eye-opener. Written not to shock but to educate and explain some of the unknown or hidden horrors of the UK prison system. Thank you, for we should all know at least some of the truths which are so often hidden from the masses on 'the out'.
Well done Dr Y.
