This was my first time reading Sue Watson, and let me start by saying that she has a new fan! I devoured this book! It was an easy and fast read! I was able to read this in a day because it was SO good. I loved the suspense, the twists and turns, and especially the ending. I loved that I was suspicious of most of the characters-it kept me wondering and trying to guess the ending the whole way through. I would definitely recommend this book, and I’m excited to talk to other Bookstagrammers about this one soon. Many thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for the ARC.

“The Resort” is a thriller by Sue Watson. I’ve read a number of books by Ms. Watson in the past (and still have more to read!), so I’m familiar with her writing style and character development. In some ways this book worked for me - the mystery element, the idea of people trapped on an island, along with red herrings, twists, and that fantastic opening chapter. However in other ways I found myself having problems keeping the couples apart, keeping the various POVs straight (meaning who was narrating), and wondering just how reliable anyone was in this book (unreliable characters is a trope I don’t like much). If you enjoy twisty books with interesting characters and a dash of mystery thrown in, this might be a book you enjoy.

Loved this story!! The twist at the end will take you by surprise. The characters are so well done that each stands on their own. Loved it from start to finish.

Wow, Having read some of Watson's previous books I knew this would be a great read and I wasn't disappointed. Drawn in right from the beginning I was hooked.
Three couples, David and Sam, Becky and Josh, Daisy and Tom all meet on an island in a beautiful hotel in Devon. Each couple is there for a reason.
Unfortunately within a couple of days Stella a young hotel worker is found dead. No-one can leave the island.
The chapters are told from each of the women and why they are at Fitzgerald's.
This was such a gripping page turner. The heat of summer and being trapped on the island made it feel very claustrophobic. I was suspicious of each husband as we find out more about their marriages.
You could feel the tension building until the end.
I read this in two sittings and absolutely loved it.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC in return for an honest review.

One surprise after another...it is difficult to discern the ending because there are so many red herrings. When I thought I had the story figured out, another hint...another surprise...mystery, murder, intrigue...this author has woven a story that is difficult to put down...it is a story like none other...but then it could be real...it could happen...it reads like true crime...but it is fiction...the characters are just not likable...they are manipulative, mean, sometimes despicable...although at times, the story does move a little slowly...it finally comes to the end...and whew...enough said. Don't miss this book...It was sent to me from Netgalley for review.

I always look forward to a new book by Sue Watson. She is one of my very favourite authors and been a fan since I first read the woman next door and the sister in law. Recently read the new wife which I loved so was excited to read her new novel the resort. Beautifully drawn characters and a story so intriguing it kept me one-more-chaptering till late into the night.
This was one of those books that sucked me in from the beginning and didn’t let go until I finished! I thought it was well written, with absolutely flawlessly done characters, and absolutely unputdownable. Dark, grisly and utterly compelling. Thriller writing at its finest. Can’t wait to find out what sue brings out next but I’ll be first in the queue to read it!

Great respect for Sue Watson, its always a joy to read her books but The Resort is the best so far.

A beautiful luxury resort, a couple on there honeymoon, a couple needing time to reconnect and a couple needing precious time together.
Things start to unravel with the death of a young women and the reader is given glimpses of each couple interaction with each other.
Cleverly written and i changed my mind so many times as to who had done what and to whom right until the very end.
Highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a fast pace, keep you guessing book.

My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advanced copy in return for leaving my honest review.

The Resort by Sue Watson has all of the delicious intrigue and cleverly plotted twists that we have come to expect from this not to be missed author.

Three couples meet at a luxury holiday resort by chance, and soon become connected by unsavoury circumstances. A young woman has been found dead on a beach near the resort, and a lockdown of sorts will keep each of the couples on the property while police investigate the grisly crime. It soon becomes apparent that none of the marriages are what they appear to be on the surface, and everyone is struggling with their own reality. An Agatha Christie-esque narrative unfolds, and it is never quite clear whom among the guests can be fully taken at their word.

I have always enjoyed the compulsively addictive writing of Ms Watson, and her latest will keep you guessing until the final page.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.

Just finished this so please excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor! 😱🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Talk about a TWISTY page turner.

I live for books that leave me speechless and this book did just that. I actually feel quite sorry for the next book that I read because there is no way it be able to compete with this twisty gem.

LOVED it!

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of The Resort. What a great beginning! Who is leaving the island, and what happened there? The story was a pretty typical “locked room” mystery but with a good variety of people. The story unfolds slowly as we get to know the main characters, and I didn’t like any of them - they were all flawed in many ways. The writing pulled me in and I really wanted to find out how the story would end because so much was going on. The ending was surprising, but a little anticlimactic for me. However, this would be a wonderful beach read, fast and easy. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

GRIPPING.
Three couples book a luxury resort to die for in this gripping psychological thriller by Sue Watson.
Becky and Josh, a couple who lies to each other constantly and everyday.
Daisy and Tom, The grieving couple who can't have children.
Sam and David, The mismatched couple who have nothing in common.
The common thing? Stella, the waitress and yoga teacher a woman in which three men were interested...is found dead by the sea.
Who did it and why?
This was a GRIPPING tale with lots of twists here and there. I love the way she creates her characters. I couldn't put it down.
Overall it gave me an experience of a rollercoaster ride. Loved it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me an advance copy.

Three couples are at a luxury resort on an island off the Devon coast when two of the women out walking find a body. It's that of one of the staff who had various jobs from waitress to yoga instructor. The couple each have their own issues from being childless to not quite trusting the other half and one pair are newlyweds having only known each other a matter of months. Did your husband flirt with the now dead waitress and can you trust the man who you have just married?
A nicely built tension which puts the reader guessing at the perpetrator as there are so many leads and red herrings. My thoughts went from person to person, to me the sign of a well thought out and cleverly planned book. The pages turned quickly and I soon got immersed in this, ever guessing who and what and why which is just as I like it. A mystery to the very end and one I thoroughly enjoyed.

Compelling Suspense…
A dream getaway - a luxurious and elegant hotel on an isolated island. Sounds perfect? Think again. These couples are about to get way more than they bargained for. Immersive suspense with a well drawn cast and a swiftly moving narrative, jumping from one couple to the next and person to person. The reader learns their backstories and present predicaments. When murder rears its’ head, the real secrets begin to emerge along with true personalities. Compelling and compulsive and with a denouement which may surprise.

When it comes to tension and suspense, weather often has the power to make things seem ominous and immersive. Nobody knows that more than Watson. She has expertly harnessed the weather to enhance the reader’s sense of imminent danger. In fact, she’s used the weather as a plot device, as an indicator of emotional pulse and as a character! Her characters have come through and/or will go through their own storms as guests in this hotel. It was inspiring to sit back and see what Watson was able to weave into her narrative. The end result is atmospheric and brooding and without you realizing it, she’ll have you shivering despite the heat wave !

“The heat throughout the hotel is even more intense. You can’t escape it. Like a stalker it follows us, creeps around and settles wherever we are, making us tired, tense and argumentative.”

“In this hot, claustrophobic setting, friends are questioning friends, wives are looking differently at husbands, no one trusts anyone.”

“Everything’s quiet. Even the waves are calmer, like their hunger has been sated now.”

In addition to her expert use of weather, Watson is deft at utilizing the setting to add depth and richness to her writing. Fitzgerald’s is a luxury hotel set on an island. Resort guests are lured by the glitz and glamour and dress to impress. It’s a calling card for deception; people pretend to be someone they’re not and their actions parallel their pretense. People were pretending they’d nothing to hide! Interestingly, the hotel’s old world charm with the crystal chandeliers and opulent colour palettes lose their glitz and become shabby and dim as evil grows and starts to take over the island. Once the guests realize they can’t leave due to the police investigation, their outlook dims, and what was once considered a luxury vacation “feels more like a prison sentence.”

“There are so many good fakes around these days you just can’t tell at a distance”

“There's lying and there’s hiding the truth. Are the two things different?”

“People hide their true selves, they present an image to the world and too often the world buys.”

Finally, Watson explores some issues that I’ve never seen addressed in novels before; that of how revealing a diagnosed illness changes how friends interact with each other and how the death of ‘one of us’ gives license to intimate comments about close relationships that never existed prior to death. How ironic that people often feel uncomfortable and shy away from forming meaningful friendships when they hear someone is ill - that’s when sympathy and kindness are most needed. On the flip side, how ironic that people pretend to have friendships, closer ones, with the recently deceased when in reality they were passing acquaintances. Human nature is quirky! Watson’s work showcases it well.

Beware! While Fitzgerald’s is beguiling and enchanting, it’s also hiding some dark secrets of lust and revenge. Just ask newlyweds, Sam and David Harrison, twentieth anniversary celebrants, Becky and Josh Andrews or busy executives on a couples-focused getaway, Daisy and Tom Brown.

I may not have identified with any of the characters this time, but I was absorbed in a compelling read and in awe of the author’s talent. I can’t wait to see what she writes about next!

I was gifted this advance copy by Sue Watson, Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

What should have been a relaxing getaway becomes a nightmare in this book by Sue Watson. When a woman is murdered, the question is raised of who is to blame and who can be trusted? Is the narrator reliable? Recommended for mystery/suspense lovers. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
