Well, Riley Sager has done it again. I couldn't put this down. It only took me two days to read and now I'm sad It's finished.

The story starts out as a typical "Rear Window" style plot, but boy does it take you on a wild ride when you finally get going. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going something changed and threw me for a loop.

I think it's safe to say that Riley Sager is now my go-to when I'm looking for a twisty thriller with a difference.

Another 5 star rating for Riley Sager!

Casey Is struggling to cope with the death of her husband, and has consequently made a few bad decisions. Her mother has sent her to the family vacation home at Lake Greene to sort herself out. Whilst drinking her way through countless bottles of spirits she begins spying on her neighbours across the lake. Nothing too interesting is happening, until Katherine disappears without a trace, leaving Casey with a case to solve.

I am a huge fan of Riley sager and so I have been anxiously anticipating this book for a while. Especially as I didn’t enjoy ‘survive the night’ as much as I’d expected.
Well I’m so pleased to say this was right up my street. I love rear window, so I welcomed the resemblances bore in this story. But I was not prepared for the turn the book took just after midway, and I’m so glad Sager decided to go down that route. A great thriller with a supernatural vibe!

I love Riley Sager because you never end up reading what you think you are reading when you start the books and this allows for all of them to be totally unpredictable. There really isn't anything that couldn't happen.

The House Across The Lake is clever at messing with your perception and is a pacy, addictive read during which I wasn't even bothered by the drunken main protagonist- a trope that normally irritates me.

This is a murder mystery and a twisty psychological thriller that goes down strangely compelling paths and remains unexpected to the last.

Thoroughly entertaining and fun to read with great writing and a haunting plot.

OK you do need an open mind! I loved the premise of this book and was really excited to get stuck in just on the basis of it as a standard thriller but omg it is so much more than that! Talk about a layered multi genre story?! I love horror and supernatural so this was right uk my street. There were a couple of bits that seemed overly long and waffley but yeah, this literally kept me up all night..... partially because I wanted to keep reading and partially because I'm a giant chicken n started to get really freaked out lol. Absolutely recommend

I’m hopping up and down and wish I could throw this book at you so you could read it. There were some reviewers that weren’t as excited as me but I loved it. Not my usual genre but am frantically searching for the authors back catalogue!

This started out as a thriller based on a nosy neighbour who is a (somewhat failing) celebrity, and also an alcoholic.. She senses something is not right between her new neighbours and sets out to investigate, mainly by watching them 24/7 through binoculars. However this eventually turns into more of a horror/fantasy genre broadly in the vein of Stephen King's style - although not nearly as believable..

I enjoyed it for the most part but began to lose interest towards the latter part.

The house across the lake did not do it for me
I love a good thriller, and I normally dont mind a bit of supernatural going on, but this went too far for me and I just did not love reading it

This was a winner for me up until the last 20%. I love books like this which start off with a brilliant opening scene...Casey has a detective at her table asking her questions and has a man upstairs tied up in her bedroom. That's the kinda premise I love in a book. I am also a fan of Sager's previous novels so I had really high hopes for this one.

And those hopes remained high for the first 80%, the story of how Casey ended up where she was in the present day and how she ended up with this guy tied up in her bedroom was fascinating and definitely kept me engrossed however the last 20% just feel totally flat for me. I can't really go into why for the sake of spoilers but this will be a hit or miss for most people and it just missed for me.

The writing was still excellent and it definitely kept me engaged. Like I say, I am a Sager fan and this would definitely not put me off further books, its just the way this story went that wasnt for me.

Thanks to Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for an ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.

I knew that going into this book I would love it, and I was correct. Riley Sager is one of my all time favourite authors and I was elated to have been approved to read this one in advance. A juicy plot, mystery, spookiness and a chilling sensation: mix all of this with a book that is unputdownable and this is this book. Absolutely incredible!

Dang it. Sager has done it again. I am gobsmacked. Though there was an element that I didn't particularly enjoyed, the plot twists I didn't see coming and left me reading with my mouth open were so good I didn't even mind the flaws of the book. The story was so well put together and yes, it reminded me of other books and movies at times but this was just too good. I constantly thought I knew the plot and then I didn't.

Widowed actress Casey Fletcher has escaped to her family's lake house to get peace and drown her sorrows. Then the glamorous couple across the lake catches her attention. They are so perfect... but is everything as it seems? Casey ends up with a man gagged and bound in her house and a lot of truths to uncover... A thrilling story with shocks and twists that keeps you turning the pages. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.

2.5 rounded to 3 stars.

I was pretty excited about this book, it was one of my most anticipated reads of 2022 and was ecstatic when I was approved for an arc.

I haven’t read all of Sager's books but from the ones that I have, he seems to be really interested in adding paranormal elements into his work.
When they get done right can be quite interesting like in Home Before Dark where everything made sense and even if it didn’t it was explained pretty thoroughly by the end but other times they don’t work out that well like in Lock Every Door where he was only using paranormal elements for the shock value without them ever making any sense or being valuable to the plot.

With this one, he relied too much on the paranormal elements to save the whole plot and I don’t think it worked at all. I mean, he tried to avoid the VERY obvious outcome by adding something no one saw coming and it initially worked, as I was shocked because I was not expecting it, but he still went with the obvious outcome so what was even the point. Yes I was creeped out but why? To add a few more pages and extend the length of the book?
He could try to fix the whole idea instead of just adding a few pages of nonsense but idk that’s just my opinion.

I didn’t find the whole book as boring as some of the reviews are saying it was but there were definitely some reeeeeeeally long internal monologues and unnecessarily long descriptions but overall the writing seem really immersive to me, I just can't help but think the whole plot could surely be better thought out.

Thank you NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for the digital ARC.

On the surface this book seems like a classic thriller trope that, while really well written, has been done before. But once you get going you realise there is so much more to it!

The problem with reviewing a book like this is that there so much I want to say…. But then I would be ruining the book for you.

To keep it concise, Sager has written a fantastic book here with a lot to keep you on your toes.
When writing a novel you need to look at more than the plot. You have your characters, your place, your time, even your weather….. all key points that layer to make a good book a great book, and that was fully encompassed here.

There were twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and plenty of WTF moments throughout. An easy recommendation from me.

I’ve read a few of this authors books now, and to be honest I think they’re not really for me. I would love to say I was gripped and shocked and surprised but sadly, I found myself bored and straining to hold onto any semblance of belief in the plot. I’m sure loads of people will love this, but it wasn’t for me.

Actress Casey Fletcher has retreated to her families Lake house armed with several bottles of liquor and a pair of binoculars after a string of bad press and losing her job. When she saves her neighbour Katherine's life she becomes invested in watching Katherine and her husband Tom's lives and then she witnesses something suspicious and with a string of female disappearances happening at lakes in the area she wonders if the same things happened to Katherine. With the help of her neighbour Boone and a detective can she figure out what happened with the couple in the house across the lake?

This was so gripping and had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through I kept thinking I knew what was going on only to be proved wrong. Casey is a great unreliable narrator as she spends all her time sitting on her porch drinking so you're never sure if what she's witnessing is real also how she manages to do anything with the amount she drinks I don't know. Riley Sager does a good job of making you feel like your sat on the porch with Casey looking out on the lake watching the big glass house. Every character was very well fleshed out and had their own voice. And I spent a lot of time rooting for Boone and Casey to end up together.

About 70% of the way through we get to some supernatural elements regarding the lake and the missing females. I didn't expect this and I know some people may not enjoy this twist as it makes the story less believable than if there had been a sane explanation.

Riley Sager has definitely become an autobuy author for me now as this had me on the edge of my seat not wanting to put it down. Definitely recommend.

Thankyou to Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for the E-arc in exchange for a review.

I’ve been waiting for this for ages, thanks to Netgalley for the ARC! Riley Sager’s books are always great (morbid) fun and this was no exception. He references the bonkers plot in the acknowledgements and.. yes, I do have some questions and no, I can’t ~*completely*~ explain what happened here 🧐 but I read it in a couple of hours and had a really great time so it’s four stars from me!

Let me start by saying I have always found Riley Sagers book to be either hit or miss. The blurb and plot line always makes me want to read it and most of the time I end up disappointed.
Unfortunately this was another one that missed the mark.
My main problem I had was that I found this to be SO similar to The Woman In The Window it isn't even funny. An alcoholic, unreliable narrator who watches her neighbours and sees things that don't seem right. Sound familiar?
As the story developed the final 3rd felt ridiculous. However as the book was nearing the end, I was more invested than I had been for the entire book and I did find the ending to be satisfactory.
One thing I did like was the main character Casey. Even if she was unbelievably naïve and if I had to read another sentence about how much alcohol she drinks, I would scream.
Overall, it was OK but the similarities to other stories really ruined it as all I could think about was how it was a rip off of others.

Good thriller but it did remind of me a lot of ones I have read such a Girl on the Train, The Woman in the window and Rear window all merged into one. It was chilling in parts and very atmospheric but I did feel a bit let down by the ending and the supernatural element. Not sure about this one.I did like it but I felt cheated if that is the right way to describe it?

The House Across The Lake is a spooky, thrilling and gripping story that hooked me from page one! When I first saw I had been accepted for the arc of this, I couldn’t contain my excitement and yes, I dropped all other current reads to get to it!

I loved the elements within this book but I can’t say what they were because of ✨spoilers✨

As always, I loved the unique plot & many twists that Sager brought with this book. I could not have guessed in the slightest where this book was going, it was such a ride!

Sager is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors for the thriller genre and I am not mad about it 😍

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I could not recommend his work enough & highly suggest you keep an eye out for this upcoming release which is set for hitting stores on July 7th (or you could pre-order)😏

I'd not read a Riley Sager book before this one, but his book Final Girls has been on my TBR for so long, so I jumped at the opportunity to read his newest book The House Across the Lake to see if I liked his writing style, and I can safely say that I do, and I think I will enjoy his other books, not just Final Girls. Casey is bored living on her own, so naturally, she wants to get to know her new neighbours, but first, she spies on them from the comfort of her own house, and since the Royce's house is pretty much a glass box, it's almost like an invitation to look. I went into this book thinking that I hs it sussed from pretty much the get go, but oh, how wrong I was!

A fast paced read that I couldn't put down, but I didn't feel very satisfied with the ending, but it was still good nonetheless.
