I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It was a window into how it feels to be a black person working in the publishing industry as well as fascinating tidbits about hair and alternative points of view.

The story itself is really interesting with just enough mystery about what is happening, to keep you turning the pages as it builds to a climax at the end. The story is an allegory for the question: do I alter myself to fit in or do I be myself and hope that others will accept me for who I am, even though I'm different to the norm?

I did find myself slightly disappointed by the main character by the end but also sympathetic to her taking the easier and what she saw as the ultimately more successful route. It's a lesson in giving space to people who are different from the established norm, whoever that might be and allowing them room to be themselves and succeed for who they are, not for the mould we expect them to fit into.
