If you can get past the "shadow" side of this book, it's enlightening and informative. It covers the three main dark triad traits: narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. It discusses the research that has been done on these traits and provides a checklist of signs and behaviors that can indicate the presence of these traits. The book also offers advice on how to deal with people who exhibit dark triad traits. Overall, a fascinating and insightful read.

This book wasn’t for me. Oversimplified to the point of coming across as patronising, the material was well trodden and offered nothing new.

Good overview of the dark side of human mind and behavior. Great presentation of potentially difficult topics in an organized, easy to follow format that any lay person can understand and apply.

This handbook professes to describe what dark psychology is, how to detect it in others and to protect oneself against being manipulated or used and abused by such individuals.

What is 'dark' psychology? At its simplest, we are talking about bad, even evil, people: those who get what they want by cheating or lying: swindlers, corporate psychopaths, serial abusers in any kind of a relationship, political demagogues in large part responsible for crimes against humanity.

Definitions begin with the so-called triad of dangerous characteristics: narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy: actually, a tetrad, if sadism, getting your jollies out of the pain of others is included too. Later on, the writer attempts to give these expressions a lay person might be comfortable with: those bad apples we might prefer to avoid could be termed as either mean, crafty, special (by their self definition, no prizes for recognising what this category is about) and wild.

Reader, beware! The book warns against either jumping to conclusions or becoming too vigilant any time what seems to be a red flag is spotted (the reader is also invited to check themselves for the tetrad). In any case, the book does also comment that high emotional intelligence, and attempts to cultivate it should this be lacking, are the best antidotes to getting burnt by the wrong people.

There are a couple of case studies given in victim/predator relationships, the usual suspects such as Manson and Hitler get a mention, as does the current tinder swindler.

Red flag signs such as whether or not manipulating or gaslighting (where you are told you are imagining things, you silly dear) is taking place is examined.

Neuro-linguistic programming is also mentioned, though the details on how this is used seemed sketchy. Neither is Facebook let off the hook in terms of how public opinion can be swayed using manipulative techniques.

A lot of what is written here is material that this reader at least has encountered a few times already, so am not sure there is a massive amount here that is new.

And why this fascination with the baser side of human nature anyway? There is quite the homily in the last few chapters that maybe the best way to get the best response out of other people is not just to develop greater emotional intelligence, but also to be good in turn rather than bad. Whilst that may all be very true, not sure that a homily actually teaches much about getting wiser to the ways of grifters, as the blurb professes to do.

There seem to be several versions of this title, all apparently written by different authors when I checked in the wider world. What could be going on............
