After reading “Date me, Bryson Keller“ I knew I had to read the author’s new story. I really loved Nate, he is a great guy: a reliable friend, a little shy but also confident in himself. And Jai is the “typical“ extroverted, outgoing friend who one can have so much fun with. This book is everything I wanted: queer, coming-of-age, friends-to-lovers and a good storyline! I loved it!

I didn't love this one, it felt a little fan-fictiony. Definitely for the older end of YA. It was a quick read, and I did quite like the characters and the band/music setting was fun.

Another book by Kevin Van Whye that had me sucked in from the very beginning. Another book with characters that are incredibly well portrayed and could easily just walk off of the page. I instantly connected with Nate and Jai and just loved watching their relationship change as the book continues. The romance in this book is so sweet and charming and just made me feel so warm and cuddly on the inside. It is a book that takes you on a literal journey and I really loved that this book was set in South Africa and all of the little things that happened because of this.

I adored Kevin van Whye's debut novel, and was excited to see that this follow-up was set partly in South Africa (where my family is also from), so admittedly my expectations were sky-high for Nate Plus One. Honestly, they weren't quite met: I found a lot of the writing clunky and the pacing seemed off, with some parts very rushed and others quite slow-going. I often found myself wishing the editor had been more thorough, because a lot of what felt clunky to me could have been easily fixed, and the characters were winning enough that I did have affection for them.

Nevertheless I think teens will still find a lot to love in this M+M Own Voices YA romance, but for older readers of YA it's perhaps not the one (and that's fine! We are not the intended audience after all!)

Nate Hargraves' looking forward to his cousin's wedding in South Africa until he learns that his ex-boyfriend Tommy will be there, and his mother can't travel with him. Luckily his friend (and crush) Jai Patel steps up and says he'll go as his plus one.

Meanwhile the lead-singer in Jai's band quits and betrays them just before a competition finale. Nate volunteers to take his place.

This is fun, easy to read, mainly lighthearted book, but it does deal with difficult topics at times. I loved seeing the relationship between Nate and his Ouma (grandmother). It's great to see a non-Western setting for a YA contemporary, I don't think this is something we see enough of.

My main critique of this book is that it's too short; I would really like to have seen more of a resolution of Tommy's story. The book felt like it ended too abruptly and could have used an epilogue.
