An interesting story
Obviously, set in contemporary Edinburg, I enjoyed the descriptions of Edinburg on Hogmanay (New Year’s for us in the US) which proved very interesting. The author describes what you’d be seeing if you were there through the thoughts of the main character Steph. She’s going through a very difficult time and is single for the first time since high school. With her friend, they travel through the sights and sounds of Edinburg, and Steph meets another single who’s alone. Steph and Jamie spend the entire night together, but Jamie has to leave quickly in the morning before they exchange their last names or contact information. A large part of the book is dealing with Steph trying to find him.

Steph, the central character, goes through a breakup and meets a new love interest on Hogmanay (new year). The story is familiar in many ways as it follows a typical romance theme, but has an originality due to the rich character development and plot twist at the end.

I really loved seeing the descriptions of Edinburgh and references to many of the local spots.

My only criticism of the book is that in places, particularly at the start as the scene was being set, I found some parts of the dialog a little clumsy. It seemed that the characters were overly explaining things to provide the reader context rather than weaving them into the narrative.

A really enjoyable read, that was quick but a little more thoughtful than many books of its genre.

Thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for sharing an eARC with me.

This was an excellent read. The setting was well thought out and the characters were fantastically developed. There was a bit of intrigue, a big dollop of cute romance, and some sprinkles of fun and enjoyable side characters all wrapped up in a fairly happy ever after.

In addition to the cute rom com of it all, there’s also a rather poignant look at the lives of disadvantaged people and it proved an excellent backdrop to this cute story.

This was a rather unique experience. I have to give the author some credit for providing solid explanations for some of the events and their outcomes in the story. The break-up and everything that followed worked for me because the author lessened the blow for me. I don’t want to reveal all, but I will say that it played out nicely.

I had a fantastic whirlwind celebratory night with Steph and Jamie. If that’s how they ring in the New Year in Scotland, sign me up! Sounds amazing to me. This duo had instant sparks, and given the circumstances, I was sort of excited for Steph to find someone who lit a fire in her. The search for Jamie was fun, too, and it was exciting to see them reunited.

Obviously, there was a bump in the road to the HEA. I wasn’t shocked, but I won’t say it’s something you read about in many contemporary romances. The story took on some weight at that point, and I felt the author was very thoughtful in her approach to the issue.

Though, the story took a more serious turn, it did return to the lighter side. The ending was one that filled me with glee. I love my loose ends tied up, and this was a wonderfully tidy ending with something good for everyone. And again, I thought the author made some great choices when it came to the conflict and resolution.

Overall: I enjoyed meeting both Jamie and Steph, and I really wanted them to succeed. A nice and tidy ending left me fully satisfied with a smile and a warm heart.

I’m a little undecided about this. The second half of the book was undoubtedly better than the first but there were aspects from early on that just didn’t sit well with me.

The break up at the beginning seemed the most unrealistic thing in the world to me. A ten year relationship smoothed over so fast with no heartache, no angst. Within twenty four hours she was having coffee with her ex and talking about their new sex lives.

A lot of books are fade to black, but this was to the extreme, I couldn’t even figure if they’d had sex or were just having breakfast together.

I did love the Scottish setting and the descriptions of all the beautiful places around Edinburgh, a gorgeous part of the world with such friendly people.

I considered stopping at about 50% to be honest, but I’m stubborn! Not the book for me but others will enjoy I am sure.

Set in my favourite city, this delightful book grabbed me from the start. I adored Steph, felt her pain when a out-of-the-blue revelation blows a hole in her world, and grinned with delight when a Hogmanay encounter promises serious romantic sparks.
But the path of true love rarely runs smoothly, and there are many road bumps along the way. Not least Steph's judgemental family (the WhatsApp group chats are a hoot), dealing with the altered dynamics between Steph and Connor – no spoilers, but I really enjoyed how their relationship progressed – and the small matter of Jamie. More elusive than the Scarlet Pimpernel, Steph's determination to track him down keeps the plot bubbling along nicely and leads to some lovely comic moments.
I'll forgive the author for making me desperate to return to Edinburgh. I'm just happy I had the chance to read this gorgeous book and join Steph on her adventures.

The concept sounded cute. The way she goes about trying to find Jamie is clever but this book is so tedious.
I died inside when I realised I was only at the halfway mark. We get it, her family is the worst and all she cares about us Jamie. There really is nothing else going on in the book and not even the secret of "what is his secret" was enough to keep me going because I guessed it the moment the first homeless guy was mentioned.
The main character just needs more to her than hating her family, having a gay ex and being obsessed with Jamie.

What a fabulous book this is! I love Nina Kaye's work. I like that she tackles serious social issues, by weaving a gorgeous love story around them. It's testament to the quality of her writing that she can do this without downplaying or trivialising the subject matter, OR losing the lightness of touch that readers look for in a romance. She did it in her previous novels, and she's hit the jackpot again with this one; her writing goes from strength to strength.

While the story is undeniably romantic, it's not saccharine-sweet; I like my escapism to have a touch of realism, and this has it. The characters are interestingly flawed and feel like real people. I was rooting for Steph and Jamie the whole way through, while Anna and the other supporting characters are the type of friends you'd want in your corner (although you'd maybe not want her family...!). I loved the Connor storyline, it was nicely and sympathetically written. I also really enjoyed reading about Edinburgh, it's been a long time since I've been there and I am definitely keen for another visit after this!

Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a lovely romance with a strong plot and realistic characters.

Thank you NetGalley and Camelot for providing me with an eARC of this book in return for my honest review.
One night in Edinburgh is a sweet easy to read story about Steph, who is dumped by her long term high school sweetheart Connor on New Years Eve only to meet the amazing Jamie at a party that same night. Jamie seems perfect, apart from the fact Steph knows basically nothing about him… what is Jamie hiding? Nina Kaye kept me intrigued trying to figure out what Jamie’s secret was, and I was absolutely shocked by what it was, I did not see it coming!! I feel like Kaye talked about some interesting and sensitive topics alongside the story that made it all come together nicely. I did find Steph a little frustrating and unrealistic at times. I found myself able to relate to Anna more who appeared to have a more realistic view on situations but due to Steph’s naivety of romance and relationships I could understand to a degree why she is unrealistic. Overall a cute read!

3.75⭐️

Steph is happily in a long term relationship with Connor, who she believes to be her soulmate - until he gives her earth-shattering news that lead to them breaking up. With really bad timing, too: being dumped on New Year’s Eve sucks - or it would have had Steph not gone out and met Jamie. After a “magical night” together, she realizes that she is not as heartbroken as she should be and that the two of them had a connection. With no way to contact him, she hatches a few crazy schemes to find him - and when she finally does, the two of them start dating. Unfortunately, Jamie seems to be hiding something big: Steph only sees him on the weekends, and he is nowhere to be found on the internet. She also doesn’t know where he lives, or what his last name even is - which all of her friends find sketchy. Becoming increasingly insecure and worried about Jamie’s “complicated situation” and his refusal to share, Steph decides to end this relationship and remains completely in the dark about what is really happening - until she accidentally stumbles upon the truth. Does Steph and Jamie’s love actually stand a chance with the last piece of the puzzle finally falling into place?

Spoiler : Jamie is actually homeless. That’s the big secret. I wasn’t surprised at all and found it a bit predictable: the author mentions homeless people a few times, which you know is no coincidence. Authors rarely ever include such details if they’re not going to matter at least a bit in the end. This and the fact that Steph works for a charity hinted that this was where it was going. I could also tell that Jamie was never a bad guy, so the awful scenarios she thinks about were a bit far-fetched to me.

Anyways, Steph is a romantic and appears to be a good person who doesn’t have the same standards as her family, so her looking for Jamie and trying to rekindle their relationship made sense. I also understand Jamie’s reaction, and his concern that Steph just didn’t know how to draw a line between her job and her personal life was legitimate in my opinion. I like that he waited until he got back on his feet before going back to her more than I would have liked it if he had just accepted her help: now there’s no question of whether or not they’re together because he feels grateful, and it’s less toxic that way. I especially liked the way he got back in touch with her, cutely reminiscent of the plan she made to find him at the beginning.

I've read Nina Kaye's other books and this has her signature style of writing - a thoughtful approach to important issues, with strong characterisation and character growth, an intriguing story (what an original idea!) and - of course - (lovely, lovely) romance.

Highlights for me included how beautifully drawn Steph and (supporting character) Connor's relationship was developed - particularly how Connor's storyline was handled so sensitively and thoughtfully. I also thoroughly enjoyed the interplay between Steph and her family members, which acted as another layer for Steph and informing how she sees the world. Anna was a well-drawn best friend to Steph, and of course, Steph's love interest, Jamie ... I just absolutely LOVED Jamie. Not only was his character and his subplot complex (no spoilers), he was a beautifully rendered love interest for Steph, bringing out in her a verve that had previously been missing. The originality of her plan and the plot twist (again, no spoilers) made this book is my favourite Nina Kaye book yet - though, I loved the others too. 5 big fat stars from me - a total page turner and highly recommended for romance lovers AND lovers of contemporary women's fiction.

Thank you to Canelo and NetGalley for the ARC. This book was just okay for me. It’s follows Steph, a girl living in Edinburgh who has just been dumped by her long term boyfriend. She hits it off with a new guy, Jamie, at a New Year’s Eve party and then can’t figure out how to contact him after. She goes to great lengths to find him (like, does something super cringey), but it’s obvious that he’s keeping secrets. I thought there were a lot of unrealistic things about this and Steph was pretty annoying for most of the book. While I can’t entirely blame her for her naivety and overthinking in this situation, it was just too much to read about constantly. It did get better after Jamie’s big secret was revealed though and I thought the ending was very sweet.

Steph and Jamie meet at Hogmanay and then there is lots of intrigue... it felt like reading a mystery :)

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.

This book is much more than just a Rom-com! The novel is about love and how many possibilities we have to give it, it's about a quick meeting at a party in Edinburgh where Steph, the MC, is fascinated by a man she will never see again and will be forced to do everything to find him once again.
The story is very well written, the characters are well characterized and I loved the setting too!
The only downside for me was the slowness of the novel, in some parts it was very slow and I struggled to stay focused, so my rating is 3.5 stars (rounded to 4).
Thanks to Netgalley and Nina Kaye for providing me with this digital copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are mine.
