Last night, in between rounds of House of Games with the fam, I was squeezing in one last read for 2022... & I’m glad to have ended on a cosy mystery sequel. The Midnight Man was a five star read for me in 2021 & I was SLATHERING for this new instalment!

Unfortunately, whilst I’m a firm fan of Caroline Mitchell as an author & will continue to read her books, I didn’t love this one as much as I hoped. It was definitely more tame & less spooky than the first & I also found that there wasn’t much recapping of the first book so I felt a bit lost scrabbling to find my way back to the characters & their stories. The first book felt like it could be a wild, standalone ride - whereas this book felt much more like a mini episode/serial within a wider narrative (especially given that it was only just over 200 pages) & that gave a distinctively watered down/lower stakes feel to the plot. The characters were also less endearing to me this time around & the reasoning behind the killings pushed the realms of realism a little too far for me!

On the flip side, I flew through it, enjoyed the moreish writing style as always & love the Slayton village vibes - think Midsomer Murders or Jonathan Creek with a supernatural twist!

I didn't realize this was book 2 in a series when I initially requested it so I made sure to read The Midnight Man before tackling this one. I have to say I preferred The Midnight Man but I didn't even really care for that one all that much. This story wasn't nearly as creepy as the first book which in my opinion made it even more lackluster. The middle of the book is slow going with not much happening and there are a lot of characters to keep track of. The ending confused me a bit but honestly I think I'm done with this series.
My review is definitely in the minority so you may enjoy this one as others have!

This crime thriller kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page. The characters draw you in and the plot is fast paced. I really enjoyed it and looking forward to recommending to friends.

And BAM, Caroline Mitchell hooked me again. I discovered this authors work on Netgalley, and have been a fan ever since. 2nd in the Slayton series, The Night Whispers packs a punch. I couldn't put it down and I'm interested in more!

I didn't realize this was part of a series or even a book two. So once I read the book, I found that you NEED to read book one, "The Nightmare Man", first as it contains a lot of info from book one. This is definitely not a stand-alone.
Anyway, I was very submerged in this The Night Whispers. It has great eerie atmosphere and creepy events.

Detective Sarah Noble is back to investigate the murders of mother and son in Slayton which match the circumstances of an urban myth of two black-eyed children killing people in the night, with fear frozen on their faces. The murder toll quickly raises and the time is ticking for Sarah to solve the mystery and catch the killer.
More of a slow burner compared to The Midnight Man, but an enjoyable read. Can’t wait for the next instalment in the macabre town of
Slayton!

I think that this is a good book, creepy and gripping. Problem is that the first was exceptional and I started it with sky high expectations.
Once I realised that it was me not the book I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It's well plotted and gripping. My only issue is that Sarah is a bit too juvenile but I like her.

This is book 2 in the Slayton Thriller series and I have to say I preferred The Midnight Man. This one wasn’t as creepy which is what I loved about book 1. I also can’t get a handle on Sarah. She’s 40 years old but comes across as in her 20’s. She was also instrumental in solving a massive case and is now back to lacking in confidence and pretty much just canvassing the streets.

I do however love Elliott. He adds so much to the series and I just want to give him a big hug. I also adore Elsie and hate how her weight is constantly mentioned. Like we know she is overweight it doesn’t have to be the only thing talked about. I would also be fuming if I got the present she got when Sarah was treating her friends.

The intermittent covid mentions didn’t add anything to the story and just seemed a bit out of place. The middle of the book is slow going with not much happening and there are a lot of characters to keep track of. I am still a bit baffled by the ending and what happens with a certain character but I will definitely read any additions to the series.

I would say if you love creepy towns with a paranormal feel then definitely check out this series. Slayton is definitely a spooky place to live. I would recommend reading them in order though because it references things that happened in book 1 without explanation.

This is the second book in the series, I think the first book was better however I still enjoyed this one. While this is a crime detective story it has a supernatural element to it and this is very well written into the plot. I really like the characters and their friendship group, all bring different things to the book.

Beware the whispers in the night, creeping closer until the black-eyed children appear on your doorstep. Elderly Mrs. Simmons invites the children into her home and calls a neighbor about them while in the kitchen making them some hot chocolate. The next day the concerned neighbor calls the police. When Detective Sarah Noble arrives on the scene it is a horrifying abattoir. Mrs. Simmons and her wheelchair-bound Sam have been slaughtered, blood everywhere and their eyes gouged out. From there, the tension and creepiness increase with more bloodshed and menace. A chilling, creepy read!

THE NIGHT WHISPERS is book 2 in the chilling Slayton Thrillers featuring police officer Sarah Noble. by bestselling author Caroline Mitchell. I would highly recommend you read in order as a lot of what happened in the previous novel, The Midnight Man, is refenced in this one.

Detective Sarah Noble returns to investigate another dark case in the town of Slayton. It's a case of an elderly lady and her son that are found murdered in their home and the crime scene is horrifying. The victims have had their eyes removed and there is blood everywhere. Two detectives are sent to investigate.

This well written page turner, compelling dark chilling plot with some supernatural elements and good engaging characters, make this a read you will struggle to put down… a perfect read for Halloween. Another winner from author Caroline Mitchell!

Another Fab read from Caroline Mitchell. Once again we catch up with Sarah Noble and then residents of Slayton, we 1st met these in The Midnight Man.
In the Night Whispers, Rosemary Simmonds and her disabled son are brutally murdered, after Rosemary opens the door one stormy night to 2 lost children.
Sarah is 1st on the scene and is then part of the team investigating the murder. We re meet some of the characters from the midnight man and are introduced to some new ones.
As with the Midnight Man, things are not all they seem and there are some spooky goings on. This is a detective novel, with a hint of the supernatural and Caroline mixes the 2 very well.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this title, however was frustrated with the little throw ins about Covid 19 as it felt like they were possibly added after the original draft, due to the outbreak but the timings were just a little off kilter at times, for example there was mention of people donning masks/antibaccing hands at a time when that wasn’t actually happening in real time. I appreciate it must be very hard for authors to write at this time and to then have to go back and add bits as otherwise it wouldn’t quite fit within the time scale they had planned their plot but to be honest felt it was unnecessary and the story would have worked much better without the mention..

All that aside it was a great read and I highly recommend. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book and my apologies for being a bit late with it

The Night Whispers sees the return of Detective Sarah Noble as she investigates another case in the town of Slayton. In this one, two young children with black eyes are knocking on a door. At the home of Geoffrey and his mother, Rosemary Simmons something is going off. When Sarah carries out a neighbour check she finds a red hand print on a wall and Rosemary and Geoffrey dead.

This is a fantastic, tension-filled read with a great sense of foreboding throughout. Detective Sarah Noble, an intriguing protagonist who is a bit of a mess, is someone to root for. Compelling, extremely dark and unputdownable. I had absolutely no idea who the murderer could have been. A good choice if you like thrillers with a supernatural slant.

When a couple are found dead, faces frozen in horror and the children are nowhere about, Detective Sarah Noble once again finds herself in the midst of another dark and deadly case in the town of Slayton.

A deeply eerie and spine-chilling read. I thoroughly enjoyed every petrifying second. I simply had to download the audiobook to listen alongside as I had done with The Midnight Man. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down.
Can't wait to read more of these.

The Night Whispers is the 2nd book in the Slayton Thrillers series. I did not read the first book. I have liked other books written by this author so I did not hesitate to get this one. Unfortunately, I definitely felt lost in this book. There were many references to the previous book and there was not enough background given in this one to put everything into context. This is definitely not a stand-alone book.

Unfortunately it was neither for me.

There were too many characters without any development. I wish the author had recapped a little about Sarah's background because it sounded like she had a rough history.

And there was a big reveal about Geoffrey (at least to me) and it was like a blip in the story. It wasn't mentioned again until later on. So once again, I wasn't sure if I was missing something.
