Cleo Forsum Pryce is arrested for attempted murder, for a crime she didn't commit. But she thinks she knows who did. In order to prove her innocence, she must wreck her seemingly perfect life.

Cleo is a successful writer who's books have been turned into a popular TV series and is happily married to Wallace. Suddenly, with no explanation, she tells her husband she wants a divorce and the production company that makes her TV series that the series must end.

Cleo can't risk anyone discovering her secrets, which will no doubt all come tumbling out as a result of the police investigation as she tries to prove her innocence.

Twenty five years earlier, we meet Cleo at University taking the geeky Heath under her wing. It's clear he is interested in her, but she doesn't reciprocate the feeling, and hopes that by giving him makeover he'll become more attractive to the opposite sex and leave her alone.

How are these two things linked? Well I can't tell you without giving anything away, but this is another great read from DK.

This was a a very steady slow burn which I do enjoy if it is done right, but I wasn't immediately pulled into the story. The second half saw it pick up and gather pace well, and with some great twists and turns it did end on a high.

Cleo Forsum is a famous writer. Her bestselling series about a baking detective is a hit television series. She is happily married to Wallace and loving the life she had always dreamt about.

UNTIL..

Cleo ends her series, her job and tells Wallace that she wants a divorce. Everyone around her are surprised and confused. But Cleo is driven to these drastic actions before something awful will happen.

We go back to Cleo twenty five years earlier as she is starting life as a student and meets Heath. She falls for him and at first they are very happy together, but Heath isn't who he appears to be and his behaviour becomes out of control and his jealousy increases. His actions have a profound effect on Cleo.

Cleo is convinced that Heath has returned and is watching her, wanting to hurt the people who mean the most to her.

I absolutely loved this book but then it's no secret that I am a huge fan of this author and have been since reading "The Ice Cream Girls"

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

I used to love everything by Dorothy Koomson, but the more recent works just do not pull me in as much - maybe it’s just me, but sadly this one was not my favourite. There’s slow burn and then there’s just slow: a story told in two parts, neither of which I was invested in until well over half way through. The ending on the other hand was then action-packed but far too fast; definitely no happy medium here. The plot was good, I was (eventually) interested to know the outcome, but ultimately, this was just 3 stars for me - not especially memorable but nothing majorly wrong with it (and other reviewers have certainly loved it, so many it is just me).

This was my first book by Dorothy Koomson and I had high hopes due to some recommendations.
However it didn't quite hit the mark for me.
It was very much a slow burn and whilst I sometimes enjoy that I didn't feel the build up of tension that I would have normally expected. I wasn't dragged into the story quickly enough although it did pick up a lot in the second half which made up for the overall reading experience.
This is still a decent thriller and I appreciated the twists and turns and I loved the ending, it just wasn't as good as I was expecting.

I've read and enjoyed a couple of other novels by the author but found My Other Husband to be a disappointing read.
It's a slow paced novel that took me a while to get into. I found the writing style fairly disconnected and the storyline overlong, repetitive and difficult to engage with.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
2.5 stars.

This book was so good! I love Dorothy Koomson's writing and have read all of her novels yet she still manages to surprise with each new book she publishes. My Other Husband was such an addictive read, one of those books where I begrudged real life intruding on my reading time. This novel follows Cleo in the past and present so we get to see exactly how she has got to where she is now. I loved this device in this novel as it really built the tension about who this man she was dating and increasingly tied to. It showed how easy it is to end up in a bad relationship with someone who has ulterior motives. This was such a brilliant read and I highly recommend it!

I decided to read this book as I had previously read The Brighton Mermaid by this author, and I really loved that book. Although this book was good, in my opinion, it did not compare to The Brighton Mermaid.

The time scales switch back and fore to the past and present, perhaps a little too much for me.

The storyline is good and unique, and I had a few "ohhh" moments as I realised what had happened. But for me, it wasn't as gripping as I'd hoped. Maybe more of a slow burning thriller, but overall, a good story and a satisfying conclusion

Really great storyline and twists, the content and plot made me want to keep picking it up but the pace was really off. Slow start up until half way then the last third was a rush to catch up it felt.

Dorothy Koomson is always reliable for a great escapist read, but this one was particularly good. Our heroine Cleo writes for television, since her bestselling novel The Baking Detective became a hit TV series, As always at the start of this type of thriller, Cleo really does have it all - the fulfilling career and a a husband she absolutely adores. Cleo is still deeply in love with Wallace, but she knows she must divorce him and leave their perfect life. Someone is trying to frame her for murder and Cleo is pretty sure who, but she can’t go to the police, The problem is that if she goes to the police to profess her innocence she will have to tell them about her other husband.

Cleo’s narrative voice drew me in immediately as she explained her decision to divorce her husband Wallace, although she loves him. This was a tale of dangerous obsession, that started part way through the story as she’s suspected of attempted murder and then took us back to the beginning to show how Cleo had come to be in this predicament. I’m always fascinated by such dangerous and toxic relationships and how they’ve formed and this is no exception. As we journey back into Cleo’s time at university the tone changes, it’s much lighter and shows us a young woman on the cusp of starting her life, She’s a sunnier Cleo, full of optimism and joking with her friend Trina about the young man staring at her and venturing guesses about what sort of romcom character he might be. This is Heath. Twenty-five years later and Cleo is far from light and optimism. What could possibly have happened to change this young woman so much?

This is the story of a toxic relationship, with an obsessive and paranoid man. Their relationship went from happy to unbearable as his jealousy and manipulative emotions start to control Cleo. Now as the people around her are murdered, Cleo is wondering if Heath is back. The only way to protect those she loves is to remove herself from the happy life she has created. The tension is perfect and the characterisation is brilliantly done. It’s impossible to stay away from just a few more pages.

I love Dorothy Koomson books and this was no exception. The dual timeline of Cleo, from her college days to the present, really added depth to the storyline and I felt myself constantly wanting to read on and find out had happened. There were a few twists thrown our way which I lo Ed, and obviously the usual fantastic writing from this author. Brilliant.

Dorothy Koomson never ceases to amaze me. “The Other Husband” is a finely crafted, extremely intelligent psychological thriller which is worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster!

Every character is believable. The timelines connect seamlessly. The plot has been exceptionally well thought out, right through to the secrets and lies which are slowly uncovered. Every single word lifts this book into the stratosphere.

Cleo and Trish meet at university and form a bond that will last a lifetime. I loved being a fly on the wall listening in to their funny anecdotes, girly giggles and later in life to their serious conversations.

But Cleo is hanging by a thread. She is being framed for murder. She knows she is innocent, but how on earth can she prove it?? As the underlying tension builds up and our hero faces unimaginable terror, putting this book down became impossible.

This is without doubt one of the best novels I have ever read.

My Other Husband by Dorothy Koomson

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to NetGalley and Headline and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Blurb

What if your murderous fantasies start to come true?

Someone is trying to frame me for murder.

They're hurting people in the ways I write about - and making sure I'm the prime suspect.

I think I know why.

But I can't tell the police or even use my rock-solid alibi . . .

Because then I'd have to confess about my other husband.

My Opinion

A long time ago I read a bunch of books by Dorothy Koomson and thoroughly enjoyed them, so I had high expectations going into this book. Let me start by saying I was disappointed, this was nothing like how I remember Koomson's writing style. I have read many rave reviews about this book and sadly I feel like I have read a different book.

The book got off to a good start and had a very gripping prologue, but for me I very quickly lost the appeal.

Rating 3/5
