A compact and informative guide to Naples and The Amalfi Coast. Divided into four distinct parts: Top 10 Naples and Amalfi Coast Highlights; The Top 10 of Everything; Naples and the Amalfi Coast Area by Area; and 'Streetsmart'. The first section introduces the reader to the highlights of the area and ideas of what to prioritise. The second section is more specific, with e.g. Museums and Galleries; Romantic Spots; Walks; Children's Attractions etc. Part three guides you through each area one at a time. 'Streetsmart', the final section, is a guide to getting around, where to stay, plus lots of practical information. Full of inspiring maps, photos and suggestions for places to visit, this book is the perfect accessory when exploring this beautiful part of the world.

For those who want something much more light-hearted in the way of travel guides than the likes of me, this book handily finds that everything – absolutely everything, from acclaimed opera names to restaurants and museums – has exactly ten of them to note and recommend. We see the grand ten – the ones no grand tour should really have thought to leave out – and then break the main one, Naples of course, into different top tens, before stretching our legs a bit more and finding that Capri has a top ten sights – or is it only ten?

Yes, I didn’t really take to the formula of this series of books, but I didn’t see much wrong with the contents. It has been a long time since I was in Italy, mind, but the simple maps and the photos brought a lot back of our two nights in Napoli. The pizzas going for simplicity and honesty, as opposed to those here in the UK; the largest collection of scaffolding I have seen in my life in one of the churches being restored (I think the Santa Maria Maggiore); the worry about the bus inspector moaning at us not getting our tickets validated when the onboard machine was rotto, which was fine when the natives chipped in and explained, but still caused us to get off at the Castel dell’Ovo, nowhere near where we needed.

Yes, this took me back, but generally it is to be a quick, devil-may-care guide, and not a perfect souvenir, nor the way to return with someone new and claim a local’s knowledge of the area. It is for the people who jab pins in maps and go wherever they land for a weekend, and nothing more in-depth than that. I did manage to see past the numerical contrivance and see this is worth four stars for that purpose, but it is by no means the ultimate gathering of knowledge for the erudite traveller to the region.
