This is the first DI Geraldine Steel novel by Leigh Russell I've read. While jumping into a series this late, some readers might have a problem working out the backstory of the characters. This novel works well just as a standalone thriller and the next installment of a series.

I loved the details woven in of the city of York (having visited once some years ago) and it took me back to that memorable trip. The walled city, the huge cathedral. The characters were believable and Geraldine, herself, was a formidable one. I wouldn't want to come up against her on the wrong side of the law.

I'll definitely have Leigh's books on my radar and will gradually read the first 17 in the series.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Fake Alibi is the latest book in the Geraldine Steel series.

DI Geraldine Steel is called in to investigate the murder of an elderly wheelchair bound woman. Her son Eddy is the chief suspect but Geraldine is not convinced of his guilt. When a colleague’s partner also becomes a suspect, the investigation becomes more confusing. Can Geraldine dig deeper and come up with the right answer?

Not my favourite book in this series but still an enjoyable read.

I have read and enjoyed Leigh Russell before and this was another decent detective story. I didn't find the story completely compelling but enjoyable nonetheless.

Really good read, thoroughly enjoyed it. All the familiar characters, lead by Geraldine, although as with the others can be read as a stand alone. Interesting plot with the usual twists and turns, which really kept my attention throughout.

Doreen Lewis has been murdered in her own home. The chief suspect is her only son Eddy but he says he was with his girlfriend Kylie all day - the only problem is the police can't trace Kylie at all and don't think she exists. The other suspect is married to one of their colleagues and both she and he are adamant that he had nothing to do with it. Geraldine Steel is the only one of the team who is sceptical about both suspects; she doesn't believe Eddy could plan his mother's murder even though he inherits the house after her death and her husband's colleague doesn't have a credible motive to want Doreen dead.

Another page turner in the Geraldine Steel series - always a fantastic read. Looking forward to number 19 already!

Thanks to Netgalley, Oldcastle Books and Leigh Russell for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

An elderly wheelchair-bound woman is found dead at home. Her son Eddy, who lives with her, is the prime suspect - even more so when his alibi falls apart. But Geraldine Steel doesn't believe that Eddy is clever enough to kill his mother and successfully cover his tracks.

The girl that Eddy claims is his girlfriend says she's never met him.

As the body count rises, so does the level of confusion.

Can Geraldine keep her head and solve the case?

Another brilliant instalment in this excellent series

Fake Alibi is the latest in the long running Geraldine Steel Series. It works as a standalone thriller, although there are links back to many past events in the personal lives of the main characters.

The case resolves around the murder of a disabled woman, with her son the obvious suspect. Although her DCI seems convinced of his guilt, Steel isn't, fearing that the young man who clearly has an intellectual disability is incapable of the highly planned crime. She is also suspicious of her senior officer's increasingly erratic behaviour.

The case takes several interesting turns and the ending contains surprises, but overall there was a rather straightforward and linear feel to the narrative.

Another good read from Leigh Russell.. although if you have read his books befor, you would expect that anyway.
A couple of neat twists in the tail, that could send you of in the wrong direction, but I did think the ending was a bit flat.
