This story of a young man returning to the gang way of life he'd tried to escape from, is an incredibly well written book. The language is brutal at times and of almost a noir poetry at others. It's reminiscent at times of the likes of Andrew Vachss or, more recently, SA Cosby. Narrative-wise, it's not as complex or nuanced as either of those writers. It's a hard boiled, stripped down narrative tale of drugs, violence and revenge...whether it is too stripped down in terms of story for some readers, will depend on their own reading of it.
